Taking over the lead role is the extremely capable Bhumi Pednekar, as disgraced IAS officer Chanchal Chauhan, who finds herself caught up in a criminal conspiracy. Top politician Ishwar Prasad, who is Chanchal\u2019s former employer, is essayed by Arshad Warsi, while Mahie Gill plays Satakshi Ganguly, a CBI officer who is investigating the mysterious affair of idols disappearing from temples across the country as well as her suspicions about Ishwar Prasad\u2019s corruption. Jisshu Sengupta is particularly earnest as ACP Abhay Singh, a police officer who is not only in charge of Chanchal\u2019s arrest, but is also her brother-in-law.\n\nThis is just the first example we see of the various twists and turns that reveal themselves through the course of Durgamati<\/em>. While initially it seems like a straightforward horror movie, the story ends up going far beyond a traditional bhoot-bangla scarefest. Through flashbacks, we see that Chanchal is in prison for murder, although the exact circumstances are not clear in the beginning. Other characters are also divided as to what Chanchal\u2019s actual crime was, creating suspense that leaves us biting our nails.\n\n

By the end, we learn that Durgamati<\/em>, with all its many genres and storylines, can hardly be called a horror movie at all.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\nBut the plot thickens when Chanchal is taken to an old and allegedly haunted haveli for questioning in Satakshi\u2019s CBI investigation. As the disappearing idols are ancient and valuable, it\u2019s of the utmost importance to recover them and figure out who is behind the thefts. Chanchal becomes implicated due to her association with Ishwar Prasad. Pednekar makes us feel Chanchal\u2019s despair and hopelessness when everyone is ranged against her.\n\nAs Chanchal unravels while locked up in the haveli, she apparently becomes possessed with the spirit of Queen Durgamati, its former inhabitant who is a dark legend among the people of the village. She goes from being self-assured and stoic to behaving terrifyingly crazy, and we slowly learn that everything is not what it seems. From the haunting, to Ishwar Prasad and Shakti, to the fraternal drama with ACP Singh, and even Chanchal herself, the big reveals keep building up until the film\u2019s climax. By the end, we learn that Durgamati<\/em>, with all its many genres and storylines, can hardly be called a horror movie at all.\n\nInstead, there are elements of a family saga, a rural drama, and a political thriller that culminates in the exposure of a shocking conspiracy. Most surprising of all is the real reason behind Chanchal\u2019s arrest. It truly will leave you guessing until the end, and you will find that there\u2019s something for everyone in Durgamati<\/em>, including those who are not horror enthusiasts.
