In my head, Shah Rukh Khan would spread his arms on any busy street with rush-hour traffic as <\/span>Mitwaa <\/span><\/i>played in the background. Alok Nath could never do any wrong. Paresh Rawal was a brilliant man who questioned religious orthodoxy. Ashutosh Rana and Sushant Singh were always the bad guys going around extorting money. Ranbir Kapoor was the overgrown child. Okay that last one might be true but the rest have got me questioning my entire childhood over the course of <\/span>#MeToo<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>CAA-NRC-NPR<\/span><\/a>, and what has generally been a taxing political time.\n\nFor the last week or so, I\u2019ve been grappling with whether or not to listen to <\/span>Tanha Dil <\/span><\/i>while nursing a confused heart. The singer Shaan recently tweeted the magic sentence to which the only reaction can be a facepalm: \u201cWhy are you discussing NRC when I\u2019m talking about CAA?!\u201d Shaan, oh, Shaan. Why would you put yourself on the road to <\/span>Bigg Boss<\/span><\/i><\/a>?\n\nA fair number of celebrities have spoken out against the violence at JNU and Jamia and the discriminatory CAA. But they are the usual suspects \u2013 <\/span>Swara Bhasker<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>Anurag Kashyap<\/span><\/a>. <\/span>Deepika Padukone<\/span><\/a> didn\u2019t have much to say about the CAA, but she did join the student protesters at JNU on January 7, merely days before the release of Meghna Gulzar\u2019s <\/span>Chhapaak<\/span><\/i><\/a> which she has co-produced. And then there were those who didn\u2019t even make our radar, but surprised us with their brave stand.\n\n\"Bollywood\"\n

Photo by Satish Bate\/Hindustan Times via Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n\nJohn Cusack, India Loves You<\/b>\n\n<\/b>Even before Bollywood\u2019s public relations teams got to work, American actor John Cusack <\/span>(2012, High Fidelity)<\/span><\/i> tweeted<\/span><\/a> an anti-fascist quote by the establishment\u2019s favourite enemy, <\/span>Arundhati Roy<\/span><\/a>, and expressed solidarity with students while condemning the police action at Jamia Millia Islamia.\n\n\u201cFascists in India trying to set students against each other \u2013 To cover for the economic collapse of demonetization but they are standing together in solidarity with their Muslim brothers & sisters \u2013 this is fascism everywhere \u2013 them or us. <\/span>\n<\/span>\u2013 Arundhati Roy\u201d\n\nJohn Cusack, not a politician or a historian but an actor. His political activism in the West \u2013 he met NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden with Roy, speaks regularly on human rights, government transparency \u2013 has been unstoppable. And his constant support for India over the past few months, even as the diaspora remains largely mum, has indeed been heart-warming. A hero unlike anything we see in Bollywood these days.\u00a0\n\nMy Name is Khan, and I\u2019m Not SRK or Aamir<\/b>\n\nTrue that, surprisingly the only Khan who actually said anything that wasn\u2019t along the lines of \u201cI don\u2019t know the situation well\u201d was Kamaal Rashid Khan \u2013 yep, KRK of the senseless reviews fame. His tweet from January 10 says, \u201cIt\u2019s highly objectionable if goons r not arrested after 5 days of the incident also, who are responsible for<\/span> #JNUViolence<\/span><\/a> whether they are from right wing, left wing, centre wing or mars wing. If goons r not arrested means govt is saving criminals which is really bad for society.\u201d\n\n

Surprisingly the only Khan who actually said anything that wasn\u2019t along the lines of \u201cI don\u2019t know the situation well\u201d was KRK.<\/p><\/blockquote> \n\nA public figure who gets into unnecessary Twitter spats with celebrities, refers to a woman as \u201c<\/span>battakh ke hoth wali chipkali<\/span><\/a>\u201d,<\/span> and doesn\u2019t stop there<\/span> is the last person to seek a sane political opinion from. But we can\u2019t wholly dismiss his surprisingly lucid comments on <\/span>JNU<\/span><\/a>, can we?\n\nNo King of Bollywood, Yet a Samrat<\/b>\n\nThe real Khiladis and Badshaahs have been conspicuous by their absence and that\u2019s when a Samrat took a stand. Pulkit Samrat, the actor from <\/span>Fukrey<\/span><\/i>, was last in the news when someone asked him if he was having an extramarital affair with <\/span>Yami Gautam<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0\n\nSamrat emerged as an unexpected ally as CAA and NRC protests spread across the nation. He might not have said something original but he has consistently shared relevant information by retweeting to his 400,000+ Twitter followers. One, I hadn\u2019t expected <\/span>Pulkit Samrat<\/span><\/a> to have clout, two, I definitely didn\u2019t think he could make progressive use of it, given his career is still work-in-progress and he once had a brother-in-law in <\/span>Salman Khan<\/span><\/a>.\n\nThe Other Chopra <\/b>\n\n<\/b>Parineeti Chopra<\/span><\/a> continues to be questioned on <\/span>Priyanka Chopra Jonas<\/span><\/a>\u2019 silence on the CAA, but that did not deter her from stepping up and stepping out from under her famous cousin\u2019s shadow, and in no unclear terms, condemn the police action on Jamia and <\/span>Aligarh Muslim University<\/span><\/a> students. \u201cIf this is what\u2019s gonna happen every time a citizen expresses their view, forget<\/span> #CAB<\/span><\/a>, we should pass a bill and not call our country a democracy anymore! Beating up innocent human beings for speaking their mind? BARBARIC.\u201d\n\n\"Bollywood\"\n

He surprised all his liberal critics, who\u2019ve been calling him out for his misogynistic roles, when he spoke up against the JNU violence. A frustrated Rajjo in <\/span>Pyaar Ka Punchnama<\/span><\/i><\/a>, a spiteful Sonu in <\/span>Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety<\/span><\/i><\/a> and most recently, a philandered Chintu Tyagi in <\/span>Pati, Patni Aur Woh<\/span><\/i><\/a>, Aaryan\u2019s characters are all literally the same whiny, sheltered, self-centered man from the Hindi heartland.
