These powerful words are from a crucial scene in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/yash-chopra-dil-toh-pagal-hai-silsila-shah-rukh-khan-mills-and-boon\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yash Chopra<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s 1961 National Award winning-drama, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dharmputra<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that holds up the mirror to present-day India in the throes of communal polarisation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Set against the backdrop of independence and the horrors of Partition, <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dharmputra<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is one of the earliest mainstream Hindi films \u2013 and certainly Chopra\u2019s bravest \u2013 that addressed Hindu extremism and religious divisiveness unsparingly through the story a young radical Hindu who wants Muslims to leave India and go to Pakistan. Indian Muslims have been battling the \u201cPakistan Jaao\u201d chants right from 1947 and in the present socio-political climate its offensiveness has only intensified. The said expression has slithered into everyday conversation and gets hurled at religious minorities, political dissenters, or anyone who is even remotely critical of the government and its brand of politics. On December 20, a police officer in Uttar Pradesh\u2019s Meerut was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hindustantimes.com\/cities\/video-shows-police-officer-asking-group-of-muslim-protestors-to-go-to-pak\/story-Qrz0O7hk7M8i83TCwrTrlJ.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">caught on camera<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> telling a group of Muslim protesters to go to Pakistan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-57758\" src=\"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1577850571.jpg\" alt=\"dharmputra\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Hindu Rashtra debate, too, has gained ground as the othering of minorities continues. Meanwhile, the establishment legitimises a terror-accused hardliner like Pragya Singh Thakur and uses its massive mandate to pass an exclusionary law like the Citizenship Amendment Act. When faced with citizens protesting against the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/politics\/caa-nrc-protests-how-poetry-has-become-the-resistance-against-caa\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CAA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the proposed National Register of Citizens, instead of allaying fears and addressing their concerns, it responds with divisive retorts like \u201cProtestors can be identified by their clothes.\u201d While the public outcry intensifies around the government&#8217;s controversial moves, supporters of the India-as-Hindu-homeland ideology remain defiant making the \u201cPehle Hindi, Hindu, Hindustan\u201d brand of nationalism discussed in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dharmputra<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> prophetic.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Based on Acharya Chatursen Shastri\u2019s eponymous novel, <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dharmputra<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s story begins in the 1920s British India when religious unity was the pivot driving India\u2019s freedom struggle against the Britishers and chants of \u201cInquilaab Zindabaad\u201d and \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/politics\/aligarh-muslim-university-banaras-hindu-university-terrorists-students-sedition\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hindu Muslim Bhai Bhai<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d reverberated around the land. Nawab Badruddin and Gulshan Rai are neighbours and best friends who consider each other family. Gulshan\u2019s son, Dr Amrit Rai (Manmohan Krishna) and Nawab\u2019s daughter, Husn Bano (Mala Sinha) grow up as brother-sister. Due to a personal complication, Bano\u2019s son is adopted by Dr Rai and his wife Savitri (Nirupa Roy). This decision deepens the bond between the families. Bano soon moves out of the country with her husband Javed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The young boy, Dilip (Shashi Kapoor) grows up to become a Hindu conservative who waxes eloquent about India\u2019s glorious past, hails religious purity, scoffs at westernisation, and disparages his family\u2019s liberal views. He joins the freedom movement but doesn\u2019t want Muslim presence in independent India. \u201cAgar Musalman Hinduon ke saath nahin rehna chaahte to jaaein. Agar woh khud nahin jaayenge toh hum unhein jaane par majboor kar denge,\u201d he clamours. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/from-1947-to-2089-what-will-india-look-like-in-another-71-years\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1947<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, when Bano and Javed return to India amid hostility and communal calls of \u201cHindi Hindu Hindustan\u201d and \u201cLe ke rahenge Pakistan,\u201d Dilip unaware of his true parentage and Muslim roots meets them with great resentment. Unwilling to accept their deep association with his family, he refuses to live next door to them and amid the carnage of Partition leads an angry mob to their doorstep.<\/span><br><blockquote class=\"quote--center\">Dharmputra holds up the mirror to present-day India in the throes of communal polarisation.<\/blockquote><br>Do Dilip\u2019s radicalisation and prejudices sound any different from the scores of modern \u201cpatriots\u201d one encounters online or in our family and at work? The ones who declare to be \u201cProud Indian\u201d, flaunting their<a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/how-much-muslimness-are-you-comfortable-with-caa-nrc\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Islamophobic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, glory-to-Hindus brand of deshbhakti, and heckling those differing from them on national issues? Or the ones who turn a blind eye towards horrific incidents of mob lynching and justify systemic crackdowns on minorities?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For many supporters of the widespread anti-CAA protests, the resistance has also been a motivator to reclaim words like secularism, liberalism, and democratic \u2013 grossly vilified and used as an insult by raging right-wingers. It has also reinforced the discourse around standing up to the bigotry of family and friends. It\u2019s imperative how <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dharmputra<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, made over five decades ago, when faced with the same question takes an unequivocal stand on it: call out objectionable views regardless of who holds them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr Rai and Savitri encourage debates with Dilip about his notions of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/citizenship-amendment-act-minority-indian-politicians\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nationalism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and yet are the first ones to cut ties with him when they realise he is far too consumed by hatred. In fact, the family\u2019s constant chasm with Dilip\u2019s ideology is a concurrent theme of the movie. His progressive siblings, like contemporary liberals, are accused of minority appeasement and clobbered with arguments of how the superior values of Hinduism ensured its survival against tyrannical Muslim rulers. Having faced the trauma of displacement in Partition himself, Chopra\u2019s own experiences are said to have influenced the film\u2019s secular tone. Moreover, when Dilip boasts to his mother about the righteousness of his religion, Savitri is quick to remind him of women\u2019s wretched existence under social ills like Sati not very long ago. The filmmaker also subverts the standard family dynamics and projects a unit where parents are broad-minded and receptive to new ideas while their eldest son is dogmatic, proving that being progressive has nothing to do with one\u2019s age.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>Dharmputra<\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> doesn\u2019t shy away from asking uncomfortable questions about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/choosing-my-religion-hindu-muslim-christianity-atheist-agnostic-hindutva-islam-rss-swami-vivekananda-anti-hindu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">religious<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> identities. When Dilip learns the truth about himself, no overnight transformation awaits him. \u201cHindu dharm ne mujhe tyaag diya, Islam ko main jaanta nahin,\u201d he laments. As he struggles with his new identity and the predicament of becoming who he had set out to fight, the futility of clutching on to a toxic ideology finally dawns on Dilip.
