{"id":586,"date":"2016-07-03T14:11:18","date_gmt":"2016-07-03T14:11:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/?p=586"},"modified":"2016-07-03T14:11:18","modified_gmt":"2016-07-03T14:11:18","slug":"global-citizen-india-coldplay-jay-z-ananya-birla-demi-lovato","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/13.207.105.184\/?p=586","title":{"rendered":"Ananya Birla and the Music of Mediocrity"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span>\n<p><span class=\"dropcap\">I<\/span>n his book\u00a0<\/p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Song Machine<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, author John Seabrook, a staff writer at The New Yorker, asks the following question about modern pop singers: \u201cWhat do they stand for as artists? Their insights into the human condition seem to extend no further than the walls of the vocal booth.\u201d He goes on to wryly note that that pop songs nowadays are perhaps, more accurately, products that work as a \u201cthree-minute advertisement for how powerful or sexual or beautiful or awesome the artist is\u201d.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is as true for Rihanna as it is for Demi Lovato. Closer home, at this point in time, it is true for one Ananya Birla, a 22-year-old girl with big dreams and a famous last name, who shared the dais with Coldplay in Mumbai yesterday. The daughter of billionaire industrialist Kumar Mangalam and philanthropist Neerja Birla who made her singing debut at a local concert\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">last week<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, went up on the same stage as Chris Martin,\u00a0zooming past thousands and thousands of legitimate incredibly talented independent musicians in this country who save up for years to be able to afford good equipment, a decent mix, a basic video, and wouldn\u2019t dare dream of buying a ticket to the overpriced Coldplay concert. \u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But that aside. This story could have gone either way. It could easily have been a story of a music prot\u00e9g\u00e9 going up on stage and surprising the hell out of haters, but the 22-year-old chose to take her one shot at superstardom and walked out of her father\u2019s moneyed shadow, by lip-syncing instead. And doing it badly at that.\u00a0The girl has essentially gone and proved right every accusation of privilege that was aimed at her in the last month.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s look at Ananya Birla. By all standards she is an overachiever. At 17, she started a microfinance company called Svatantra Microfin. Two months ago, she launched the luxury e-commerce platform Curocarte, which sells premium, handcrafted goods from around the world (a carved floret box is listed at <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u20b9<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">39,500, in case you were wondering exactly\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0premium).\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It isn\u2019t hard to fathom why someone like her would perhaps want a \u201cthree-minute advertisement\u201d, so, last Sunday, that\u2019s exactly what happened. Birla\u2019s latest avatar, as a pop star, was unveiled during a fancy brunch at a suburban Mumbai five-star hotel. Her single, \u201cLivin\u2019 The Life\u201d \u2014 written by American producer Jim Beanz (who apprenticed under Timbaland and has worked with Nelly Furtado, Whitney Houston, and Chris Cornell) and mixed by Dutch EDM sensation Afrojack \u2014 was released the same day. Bollywood star Hrithik Roshan was one of the celebrities who attended the launch and exhorted her to \u201cchange d world\u201d with her voice.<\/span>\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\">For something trying so hard to appeal to millennials and the YOLO culture, it is astonishing how well \u201cLivin\u2019 The Life\u201d works as a parody of itself.<\/blockquote>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three days since the single\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QtUpbykujmI\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">music video<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> came up on YouTube, it has gathered over three million views. Which is surprising as hell because as videos go, \u201cLivin\u2019 The Life\u201d does not even attempt to break new ground. Directed by Rock Jacobs (who has worked with artistes like Skrillex, Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne, and The Game) and shot on California\u2019s Santa Catalina Island is a vapid, carefully-colour-corrected assembly of raging hormones, back-up dancers, and depressingly family-friendly beach activities.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The song itself, whose defiant pre-choral declaration goes, \u201cI don\u2019t want the, I don\u2019t want the pain&#8230; pain\/I don\u2019t want the, I don\u2019t want the pain\u2026 pain\/I don\u2019t want the, I don\u2019t want the p-p-p-pain\/I just want to be painless\u201d, is a bland, four-chord progression with a whiny hook that is, thankfully, instantly forgettable. (It doesn\u2019t help that, as some people on social media have pointed out, the refrain, tellingly, sounds like \u201cLivin\u2019 a lie, livin\u2019 a lie\u201d.) As for the quality of Birla\u2019s vocals, well, it\u2019s hard to tell, buried as it is under layers of synths and processing, but I\u2019ll wager good money that an auto-tuning software that goes by the name of Melodyne may have had a part to play. For something trying so hard to appeal to millennials and the YOLO culture, it is astonishing how well \u201cLivin\u2019 The Life\u201d works as a parody of itself.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The three-million-and-counting views seem very suspicious; just browse through the (overwhelmingly negative) comments on YouTube, where people have asked questions like \u201cWhy is this trending in Indonesia?\u201d (Why indeed?) Did someone say, \u201cclick farm\u201d?\u00a0 Also, the amount of press this song has received is unprecedented, given that it\u2019s a single by a rank newcomer: It has received coverage in <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.business-standard.com\/article\/beyond-business\/meet-ananya-birla-a-young-entrepreneur-looking-to-strike-gold-as-a-musician-116111300646_1.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Business Standard<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hindustantimes.com\/music\/ananya-birla-launched-a-single-in-collaboration-with-afrojack-and-jim-beanz\/story-D2Ow6kVAzWgQCqLl1wevZI.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hindustan Times<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/magazines\/panache\/ananya-birla-makes-singing-debut-km-birla-hrithik-roshan-egg-her-on\/articleshow\/55471482.cms\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Economic Times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/indiatoday.intoday.in\/story\/ananya-birla-kumar-mangalam-hrithik-roshan-music-song-lifest\/1\/810339.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India Today<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.femina.in\/achievers\/people\/ananya-birla-young-smart-and-raring-to-go-29515.html\" target=\"_blank\">Femina<\/a>,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to name a few. Turns out money\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0buy you love.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The narrative, then, is really easy: Birla is nothing but just another purveyor of \u201cbrat pop\u201d, attempting to gain legitimacy using the resources at her disposal. It\u2019s the principle Bollywood has worked with for decades, wherein star kids are launched in big banner films and continue to have careers even after audiences reject them. It was the same thing that had happened five years ago when Carnatic violin maestro L Subramaniam and Kavita Krishnamurthi\u2019s daughter Bindu similarly attempted a pop debut with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=pUhi-eUwOts\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this cringe-worthy song<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (and video). <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, to me, Birla isn\u2019t an oppressor but a victim. In times where one\u2019s Instagram follower count is an acceptable measure of celebrityhood, packaging is all that counts; the contents rarely change. \u201cLivin\u2019 The Life\u201d is just <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Zjgq6-5uDtY\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn My City\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (remember that one?)\u00a0four years later, its shelf life instantly visible, its intentions merely to serve its purpose (promote a personality) and disappear into the ether like Snapchat photos and videos.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The flipside, however, is that the internet can and likely will be harsh and unforgiving. A music video floating around doesn\u2019t raise too many hackles, but a high-profile debut gig does. The Coldplay fans who spent the average annual income of a daily wage labourer on this concert have also come back home with memories of a lip-synched version of \u201cLivin\u2019 The Life\u201d being shoved down their throats.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">None of this is conclusive evidence of Birla\u2019s lack of talent, of course. For all we know, there\u2019s a legitimate musician within her, one who actually believes in connecting with listeners, not consumers. But even in a country that silently tolerates obscene privilege in most facets of life, there are lines that should not be crossed.
