Saand Ki Aankh Just  Proves That"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span class=\"dropcap\">O<\/span>ne of the most powerful performances in Zoya Akhtar\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/gully-boy-bollywood-movie-oscar-nomination\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gully Boy<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was that of Razia \u2013 the repressed, raging mother of the film\u2019s hero, Murad. Ace Marathi actress Amruta Subhash plays Razia and portrays her life of drudgery as well as the defiance simmering within with remarkable assurance. In real life, the 40-year-old actress is only six years older than her on-screen son, Ranveer Singh who stars as a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/indias-engineering-colleges-a-four-year-career-camp-for-undecided-youth\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">college student<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dreaming of becoming a rapper. While Subhash\u2019s casting can be viewed as a testament to her virtuosity, one can\u2019t deny its adherence to Bollywood\u2019s notorious history of pushing actresses of a certain age to play maternal roles \u2013 often to men older than them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, for an industry as distracted by, and obsessed with stars, it\u2019s infinitely harder for senior actresses to find age-appropriate roles that do justice to their talent. Worse, when there arises an opportunity for a movie to cast them \u2013 like Tushar Hiranandani\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/saand-ki-aankh-review-taapsee-pannu-bhumi-pednekar-biopic-dangal\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saand Ki Aankh<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, that revolves around two sharpshooters in their sixties \u2013 they lose out to young actresses more likely to have box-office pull.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The casting of Taapsee Pannu and Bhumi Pednekar, inarguably two of the most talented actresses of the younger generation, for characters that are 30 years older to them, has been heavily criticised by older actresses like Neena Gupta, Seema Pahwa and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/soni-razdan-yours-truly-middle-aged-actresses-alia-bhatt\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soni Razdan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And why not? It\u2019s ironical that a film\u00a0 on the two grandmothers whose excellence in sharpshooting is an indictment against patriarchy and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/why-young-people-fear-ageism\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ageism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> didn\u2019t feel the need to employ actresses of similar age to play them. To look like Chandro and Prakashi Tomar, Pannu and Pednekar had to undergo a transformation, rely on prosthetics. If an older actress was instead cast in these two roles, they could have simply played Chandro and Prakashi Tomar.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In several Hollywood movies starring older women protagonists, filmmakers have cast different sets of age-appropriate actors to play the young and senior parts (Think <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Wife<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Notebook<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Titanic<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saand Ki Aankh <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">could have taken the same route. It would have addressed their commercial concerns, the process would ensure a fair playing ground for older actresses, and the end result on screen would have been far more organic. Instead, the makers defended their decision by invoking their right to take a creative liberty. Except, it\u2019s an unconvincing argument that only bares their inherent ageism, given that the younger and older versions of the two Tomar husbands are played by two different sets of actors.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saand Ki Aankh<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s insistence on having the same actor play a character from ages 16 to 60 is very much in line with Hindi cinema\u2019s traditional style of storytelling, best exemplified by Mehboob Khan\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mother India<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1957). The film tracks its heroine Radha\u2019s progression from being a demure young bride, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/people\/only-child-lonelines-siblings-family-mother-pets\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">single mother<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> braving societal odds, and tilling land to provide for her family, to a dignified old woman who won\u2019t tolerate injustice even if it extracts a personal cost.<\/span><br><blockquote class=\"quote--center\">Saand Ki Aankh\u2019s insistence on having the same actor play a character from ages 16 to 60 is very much in line with Hindi cinema\u2019s traditional style of storytelling.<\/blockquote><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One may argue that Bollywood\u2019s chequered history with age-inappropriate casting isn\u2019t restricted to women. Over the years, male actors have also essayed characters older than them. For instance, 29-year-old newcomer, Anupam Kher playing a grieving, disillusioned retired <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/indian-teachers-students-curious\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">teacher<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in his sixties in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saaransh<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1984) was a casting masterstroke. Sanjeev Kumar was simultaneously playing both lead and elderly roles in the most fecund phase of his career. And more recently, Salman Khan turned septuagenarian in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bharat<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But what differentiates their outings from the plight of older actresses is that male actors are rarely typecast and continue to enjoy a long and diverse filmography that see them being cast in every kind of role imaginable. In 1978, Sanjeev Kumar played Amitabh Bachchan\u2019s father in Yash Chopra\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trishul <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as well as a married, philandering salesman in his forties in BR Chopra\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pati Patni Aur Woh<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The actor continued to bag lead roles in the following years. For superstars like Khan, playing a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/indian-parents-children-education-retirement\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">senior citizen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is at best, an experiment of repute, one which will have no serious implications on his stardom or career. The fact that the 53-year-old actor will soon be seen romancing 21-year-old Saiee Manjrekar in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dabangg 3<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is proof enough.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contrast this with Rakhee Gulzar who was Bachchan\u2019s heroine is many films during the \u201970s and \u201980s; she played his <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/modern-family\/still-a-girl-the-side-of-our-mothers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mother<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shakti<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1982) and her career as a leading lady effectively ended in the next few years. In the past, actresses like Sulochana, Nirupa Roy, Reema Lagoo \u2013 Bollywood\u2019s quintessential mothers \u2013 were cast as moms to actors as old as or even older than them. Not much has changed in the present day where Shah Rukh Khan\u2019s mother in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zero<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is played by Sheeba Chaddha who is six years younger to him.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, Hollywood actress Kelly McGillis summed up this slight in a frank response to her exclusion from the upcoming <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Top Gun<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sequel. While Tom Cruise is reprising his role as the daredevil pilot, Maverick and even has a new (and younger) love interest, McGillis, the leading lady of the iconic 1986 flick wasn\u2019t even approached for the project. \u201cI\u2019m old and I\u2019m fat and I look age-appropriate for what my age is, and that is not what that whole scene is about,\u201d she told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.etonline.com\/kelly-mcgillis-says-she-wasnt-asked-to-be-part-of-top-gun-sequel-exclusive-129341\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Entertainment Tonight<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, effectively calling out the industry\u2019s fixation with mining the currency of a woman\u2019s youth. Back home, too, McGillis\u2019 words ring true.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The scale has always tipped unfavourably for actresses over 40 in mainstream cinema. But in recent times, the resurgence of seasoned performers like Gupta, Pahwa, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/selection-day-netflix-ratna-pathak-shah-ageist-bollywood\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ratna Pathak Shah<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as lead protagonists in films like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/badhaai-ho-review-sex-gajraj-rao-neena-gupta-ayushmann-khuranna\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Badhaai Ho<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bareilly Ki Barfi<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lipstick Under My Burkha<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, felt like a step forward. Moreover, the spurt in the digital space that produced Shefali Shah\u2019s turn as the tough-talking DCP in the Netflix drama <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/delhi-crime-review-2012-delhi-gang-rape\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Delhi Crime<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Suhita Thatte\u2019s eerily chirpy saleswoman act in the short film <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mamta Tonic<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are some fine examples. In that sense, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saand Ki Aankh<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> could have been the next big step in this direction. With a worthy story, impressive budget, and the Anurag Kashyap brand behind it, the movie had a fantastic opportunity to shake off the old ways and truly be representative of change just like the film&#8217;s incredible real-life inspirations.
