Your time in the sun \u2013 or at least on the screen \u2013 is over, if Netflix is to be believed. From interpersonal social dynamics in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Riverdale<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Big Mouth, and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina to mental health in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">13 Reasons Why,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and social awkwardness and anxiety in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atypical<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/netflix-books-readers-block\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Netflix<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows are all about Gen Z. Even if these premises might seem like they\u2019re ticking off a checklist, it\u2019s still a step up from dramas limited to either unrealistic rich juvenile experiences like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gossip Girl<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or the conventional teen-to-adult trajectory followed by <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One Tree Hill<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The\u00a0 only exception was the genre-defining British adolescent drama <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skins <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that stood out for its gruelling portrayal of teenage anxieties. Yet, it wasn\u2019t until the release of HBO\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Euphoria<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> earlier this year, that a show really invested in recognising, understanding, and translating the cloud hovering over the permanently-in-crisis lives of Gen Z.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adapted from the Israeli mini-series of the same name, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Euphoria<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> traces the lives of high school <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/worst-class-students-substitute-teachers-principal\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">students<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who navigate life, love, and the burden of expectations while confronting their identities and sexualities. The show follows 17-year-old Rue (Zendaya), who befriends Jules (Hunter Schafer), the new girl in town, straight out of drug rehab as their lives intersect with that of the other students. It\u2019s a heart-wrenching roller-coaster ride through new-age American trauma that allows its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/love-and-sex\/teenager-relationships-sneaking-in-girlfriends-house\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">teenagers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to be vulnerable without any judgement. It\u2019s empowering in a way: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Euphoria<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s female protagonists \u2013 Rue, Jules, Maddy, Kat, Cassie \u2013 are not limited to the trauma they endure because of drug abuse, bullying, sexual harassment, or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/slut-shaming-schools-sexism-gurgaon\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">body-shaming<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; there\u2019s more to them.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Much of the show feels like reassurance, that reminds us that we are constantly shuffling from one emotional state to another. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Euphoria<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> overcomes the problems of shows like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Riverdale,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which hardly scratch the surface and are meant <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to be<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> consumed and chewed out like pulp fiction. The gap between the world and the current generation of teenagers has never been wider, partly because this is a generation which hasn\u2019t known an internet-free life, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Euphoria<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, fresh off its first season, is a moving window into their world without pandering to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/trevor-noah-and-the-lazy-art-of-mistimed-racial-stereotypes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stereotypes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it might be too early to call <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Euphoria<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a landmark show of its generation, its immediate and visible cultural impact is in the almost overnight popularity of its eye-makeup looks, that involve rhinestones, glitter, and lots of neon. It\u2019s influence, that goes beyond being limited to the world of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/earth\/fast-fashion-slow-death-earth\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fashion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, social media influencers, or celebrities is itself indicative of a new, braver turn in self-expression. Typical of the ever-fascinating, expansive Gen Z universe that considers American singer Billie Eilish its ambassador.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\"><p>Much of <i>Euphoria<\/i>  feels like reassurance, that reminds us that we are constantly shuffling from one emotional state to another. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To be fair, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Euphoria <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">look has been around for decades and is heavily borrowed from drag culture. But the show\u2019s<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">21st-century rendition of the \u201960s and \u201970s drag-culture-inspired makeup marks an evolution in the use of cosmetics and perception in popular culture. Sam Levinson, the show\u2019s creator, wanted the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/doodle\/super-30-hritik-roshan-movie-anand-kumar-teacher\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">makeup<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to act as subliminal emotional messaging, a way for the characters to indicate their development in each episode. This directive is evident most memorably in Jules\u2019s season finale spiky eye look, which embodied a don\u2019t-mess-with-me attitude indicated toward her bully, Nate. In doing so, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Euphoria<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> does something inimitable: It optimises the use of makeup as creative expression that isn\u2019t retrofitted to suit as a tool which services the male gaze. Instead, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Euphoria<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> posits that makeup is not a disguise, it\u2019s an expression of individual authenticity.<\/span>\n\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/admin.arre.co.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/euphoria_hbo_jules_makeup.jpg\" alt=\"euphoria_hbo_jules_makeup\" width=\"640\" height=\"361\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-55447\" \/>\n<figcaption>\n<p>Sam Levinson&#8217;s, the show\u2019s creator, directive for the makeup to act as subliminal emotional messaging is evident most memorably in Jules\u2019s season finale spiky eye look, which embodied a don\u2019t-mess-with-me attitude indicated toward her bully, Nate.<\/p>\n<p>HBO<\/p>\n<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pop culture \u2013 and by extension, life \u2013 has alerted us to the idea that makeup is an aspirational industry, that a blemish corrector will smoothen out the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/botox-middle-class-woman\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wrinkles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in our lives. But it also presumes a lack in someone, based on unrealistic male-approved beauty standards. That\u2019s not the case in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Euphoria<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where the makeup can be best described as \u201cepicene\u201d (or a lack of gender distinction), even when it\u2019s the show\u2019s women wearing it.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My favourite part about the show is that it doesn\u2019t even make any passing reference to the makeup that its characters wear scene after scene, not even as a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/how-not-to-take-a-friggin-compliment\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">compliment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which feels refreshing in a world where women are constantly made conscious of their appearance. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Euphoria<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> treats makeup as an extension of the self. The only moment where its existence is acknowledged is an intimate scene where Jules applies makeup on Rue. But even then, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Euphoria<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> accepts makeup as an emotional prop, using it to show and not tell.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s especially persuasive in the culture we live in right now, where the unhealthy reliance on photo-filters and various face-enhancement tools indicates the pressure one feels to \u201cperform\u201d beauty online. But Gen Z\u2019s embrace of glitter, sequins, crystals, bold neon colours defies a restrictive culture of beauty and embodies child-like playfulness \u2013 a fun escape from the serious business of owning yourself \u2013 that is unconcerned with being online-ready. The fact that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Euphoria\u2019s<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> makeup looks have been readily embraced by norm-defying youngsters is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">perhaps predictable. But <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">its allure across ages and body types, however, is its biggest weapon: The appeal lies in its DIY nature, making it accessible to any woman, irrespective of their fluency in the art of makeup.<\/span>\n\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\"><p><i>Euphoria<\/i>  shows us that makeup is a metaphor for life being theatre.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, it would be a long stretch to practice <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Euphoria<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-like makeup in a regular or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/work-spouse-work-wife-office-husband-jobs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">professional environment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> without raising a few eyebrows. And maybe this has the shelf-life of a trend, a trend which nevertheless indicates a deeper shift away from centring the patriarchy in our conception of beauty. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Euphoria<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> nudges us to look at it as more than a means to an end. It shows us that makeup is a metaphor for life being theatre.
