The last episode of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/what-up-biatch-breaking-bad-jesse-pinkman-el-camino-aaron-paul\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breaking Bad<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cFelina\u201d \u2014 which critics have labelled one of the best series finales of all time \u2014 leaves us with the image of former Chemistry teacher Walt lying face up in a warehouse, bleeding from his chest, his slow descent into madness having both peaked and crashed, and Pinkman driving away in a Chevrolet El Camino, his fate left to be decided by the fans.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The new Netflix film, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El Camino<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, however, takes off exactly where its prequel ended six years ago. Only this time, rather than leaving Pinkman\u2019s story hanging, it offers a deep dive into what the writer and creator of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breaking Bad<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Vince Gilligan himself, envisioned for the loveable character.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s clear right from the get go that while Pinkman may have escaped the cage from where he was forced to cook the notorious blue crystal meth, and had seen the last of his tormentor, the sophisticated sadist Todd (Jesse Plemons), he\u2019s still far from being a \u201cfree man\u201d. With the police on the lookout for him, Pinkman must now secure a certain amount of cash to plan his escape \u2014\u00a0a journey that he often alludes to during the five seasons of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/features\/emmy-awards-hotstar-premium-tv-series\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emmy-winning show<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Serving as both a sequel and a flashback, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El Camino <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">features several familiar faces, including (without giving too much away) best friends forever Badger and Skinny Pete, and arch-rival Todd, the politest <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/joker-not-incel-manual-arthur-fleck-deserves-our-empathy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">psychopath<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on television, played by actor Jesse Plemons, aka \u201cMeth Damon\u201d.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aaron Paul is the stand-out star of the movie, pulling off yet another performance that once led Vince Gilligan to call him a \u201cfuture Oscar-winning actor\u201d. If <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breaking Bad<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was a show about the sweet innocent Walter White taking control of his life, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El Camino<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is about Jesse finding his own, finally free from Walt\u2019s manipulation and the miserable circumstances that led him to losing a number of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/love-and-sex\/love-break-up-friends-relationships\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">loved ones<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> along the way. Aaron Paul pulls this off with the same soft intensity that he injected into Jesse Pinkman during <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breaking Bad<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s five-season run.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also making a surprise appearance is Rober Forster, who returns to his role as part-time vacuum salesman, and part-time transporter Ed Galbraith. The 72-year-old actor, whose role was crucial to the plot, tragically passed away on October 11, the day the movie was released on Netflix.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\"><p>If <em>Breaking Bad<\/em> was a show about the sweet innocent Walter White taking control of his life, <em>El Camino<\/em> is about Jesse finding his own.<\/p><\/blockquote> \n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A few critics have argued that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El Camino<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> lacks a solid plot and that the stakes are too low, considering ancillary characters make it a little too easy for Jesse Pinkman to succeed. There is some merit to this argument, since the film lacks the high-octane, non-stop action sequences that you\u2019d expect of the average blockbuster. Instead, we\u2019re treated to more of Vince Gilligan\u2019s love for Western tropes \u2013 after one of the stickier moments Pinkman finds himself involved in a good ol\u2019 fashion duel.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Considering the number of cameos, more discerning viewers may also feel like the film resorts to fan-service at several points. And admittedly, it\u2019s not the kind of film a movie buff unfamiliar with the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breaking Bad<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> universe will enjoy, considering they\u2019ve missed out on over 50 episodes of backstory.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El Camino<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> more than makes up for this minor setback with the excellent writing and cinematography that elevated shows like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breaking Bad<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Better Call Saul<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to critically acclaimed status in the first place. It\u2019s fair then to say that rather than being a standalone film, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El Camino<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> seems more like two bonus episodes of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breaking Bad<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u2014\u00a0 an epilogue that no one necessarily needed, or asked for but fans will be glad to have anyway. It\u2019s a testament to Vince Gilligan\u2019s writing, really: While <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/why-its-game-over-for-game-of-thrones-and-me\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Game of Thrones<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> couldn\u2019t even get a decent finale, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breaking Bad<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> now has two.<\/span>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If Breaking Bad was a show about the sweet innocent Walter White taking control of his life, El Camino is about his loyal sidekick Jesse Pinkman finding his own, finally free from Walt\u2019s manipulation.
