Below the treble of traffic jams and the thumping bass of a jayanti or an utsav, the soundtrack of this city comes from a motley crew of ordinary men, who produce the curious medley of inflection we call \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/mumbaiyya-hindi-north-india-delhi\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bambaiya<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hindi<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d. This bastard love child of demure Urdu, virginal Hindi, and boisterous yet passionate Marathi that the residents of the city use to communicate, was mainstreamed by the underworld, and more specifically movies like Mahesh Manjrekar\u2019s<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Vaastav<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Loosely based on the life of Mumbai don Chhota Rajan, the film, written by Imtiyaz Hussain (who also wrote <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ghulam-E-Mustafa<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, another cult gangster saga) helped parlance such as \u201cghoda\u201d and \u201c50 tola\u201d seamlessly seep into our Hindi. And the average Mumbaikar somehow took to it like moths to a halogen light in a Navratri pandal.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I would know. I\u2019ve lived in Bombay all my life. I was nine when<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Vaastav<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> released. Back then, theaters in my neck of south central Bombay \u2013 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/people\/sacred-games-gangsters-mumbais-ganesh-gaitonde\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Byculla<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Parel, Lalbaugh \u2013 reeked of body odour and stale wafers. There was no way to discount bed bug infestations, and the danger of encountering a stranger with his hand in his pants, eyes glued to the lovesick couple in the corner seats instead of the screen, loomed large. This meant that going to the movies was an entirely avoidable exercise. So I developed a shortcut: I\u2019d watch the pirated prints of the latest releases, like the uncut version of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Beauty, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on VHS borrowed from my local library.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1570457663.jpg\" alt=\"Vastaav\" width=\"751\" height=\"407\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-55190\" \/>\n<figcaption>\n<p><em>Vaastav<\/em>\u2019s dialogues are a gift that keeps giving. My friends and I would try and slip a \u201cpachaas tola\u201d here and a \u201ckhalaas\u201d there no matter what we were talking about, girls or goons.<\/p>\n<p>Adishakti Films\/ Eros Entertainment <\/p>\n<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s how I ended up watching <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaastav<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 a couple of us huddled together in Pappu dada\u2019s kholi, since he was the only one on our maala (floor) who had a VCR. Like the rest of the boys, I too was enamoured by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/crime\/1993-mumbai-blasts-sanjay-dutt-tada-munnabhai\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sanjay Dutt<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s swagger, as he showed parts of a gun to Reema Lagoo. That\u2019s when I picked up the word \u201cghoda\u201d, and now every time I watch the scene, it takes me back to Al Pacino\u2019s \u201calways weapon or piece Charlie, never gun\u201d from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scent of A Woman<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That year, \u201cGhoda nikalu kya?\u201d<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and \u201cAey ghoda kad re lavdya\u201d<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">became words du jour when Bombay wanted to vent its ire. None of us, of course, were in possession of a \u201cghoda\u201d, but that did not stop us from brandishing our toy guns and pretending to shoot each other as we ran down the corridors of our chawl. The popularity of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaastav<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> vocab hit home one day when my mother \u2014 while clutching her favourite broom that she used to be beat me with \u2014 threatened to pull out the \u201cghoda\u201d to counter my pre-teen assholiness. I too channeled by inner Sanju Baba, looked at my mama and said, \u201cKya itna khunas derilye hai tu.\u201d Needless to say that only prompted her to hurl the broom in my direction.<\/span>\n\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaastav\u2019s<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dialogues are a gift that keeps giving. My friends and I would try and slip a \u201cpachaas tola\u201d here and a \u201ckhalaas\u201d there no matter what we were talking about, girls or goons. My favourite was \u201cPachaas Tola\u201d, which roughly translated to\u201d500 grammes of gold\u201d (one tola is 10 grammes or 180 troy grains, depends which side of the freedom struggle you were on). Sanjay Dutt\u2019s manic laugh as he tugs to his <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/series\/true-crime\/gold-dhanteras-2016-gold-smuggling-mumbai\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gold chain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and says, \u201cPachaas tola\u201d is the first thing that comes to my mind when anyone says <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaastav<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Even today, in the chawls of Mumbai, you\u2019ll regularly hear boys saying, \u201cArr\u00e9, first class, pachaas tola,\u201d regardless of whether someone is asking them, \u201cHow was your day?\u201d or \u201cIs the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/features\/bombay-meri-jaan-vada-pav-bombil-fry-cutting-chai-mumbai-mirrored\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vada pav<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> here any good?\u201d<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anyone with a broken limb was called \u201cfracture Bandya\u201d, the dada who could settle disputes earned the moniker \u201cmandawli bhai\u201d, and \u201cpeti pack\u201d (sealed package) is what is still used to tease boys who get no action. The language of the galli is replete with homegrown gems such as \u201cvantaas ki goli\u201d which was how you told someone to GTFO, or \u201ckhajoor\u201d to address a particularly annoying person. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaastav<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reminded us that in a sticky situation, you either called your \u201cpublic\u201d or your \u201cshooters\u201d, which usually meant your closest friends. Twenty years after the movie was released, it\u2019s impossible to look at <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaastav\u2019s<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dialogues in isolation, for they are merged into our everyday lexicon. This is the language Mumbai speaks, the language the street kids understand.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\"><p><em>Vaastav<\/em> set a template that went beyond the usual apun-tapun; it showed us that, though not lyrical, the tapori language oozed bonhomie and brotherhood.<\/p><\/blockquote> \n\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaastav <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">set a template that went beyond the usual apun-tapun; it showed us that, though not lyrical, the tapori language oozed bonhomie and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/bro-code-toxic-masculinity-woke-men\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brotherhood<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Years later, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Munnabhai MBBS<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and most recently, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gully Boy<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> did what<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Vaastav<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> set the trend for \u2013 give Bollywood dialogues a coloquial veneer that\u2019s generally missing. Today, punter log have become bantais and street slang has made its way to Twitter, but there is nothing that matches Sanju Baba\u2019s guttural \u201cPachaas tola\u201d.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These phrases coalesce to become tidal waves that are representative of Mumbai\u2019s identity. They are a snapshot of what this city beyond the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/features\/bombay-nariman-point-mumbai-mirrored-shirish-patel-kemps-corner-navi-mumbai\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Queen\u2019s Necklace<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and its plush skyscrapers is really like. Films like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaastav<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are rich photo albums that, just like Mumbai, are a crude amalgamation of different cultures, ideologies and classes, held together by a couple of \u201caailas\u201d and a bit of \u201cbhenchod\u201d. I imagine, it\u2019s a fusion hard to fathom for chaste tongued newcomers, but for Mumbaikars, it\u2019s an unwritten code, a secret language that bridges all divides and brings us together.
