Every once-in-a-while, I am drawn to it; especially the contents still living in its many chor khuns (secret compartments). Stashed in one of these hidden sections is a fluorescent green tub of Jai Kaajal, one my dadi used to dot us with kaala teekas, \u201cthe ultimate protection from evil eye\u201d.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was another lifetime when you had a compass-like situation,\u00a0kaajal<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dots in the East, West, North, South of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/indian-parents-private-parts-genitalia-children\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">children<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s faces. During my teen years, I played a staunch rationalist against this practice. Now, reading 11 ominous news articles on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-37858639\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sharenting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the last two months has sent me running for this coin-sized kaajal box and going nostalgic about those days.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sharing (mostly oversharing) the joys and challenges of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/modern-family\/parenthood-adult-life-children\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">parenthood<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and documenting every bit of your children\u2019s lives online is now a social norm. Parents at it are called sharenters, and the act, sharenting. This one is not a straight out portmanteau of sharing and parents. Online legend is, on May 18, 2012, the Wall Street Journal writer Erin McKean coined the term \u201coversharenting\u201d in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/SB10001424052702303360504577408521167603132\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWords of the Week\u201d article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> pointing out the superfluity with which parents were sharing information and photos of their kids online.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scientists in high places are successively publishing studies on the price of sharenting. University of Michigan CS Mott Children&#8217;s Hospital National Poll on Children\u2019s Health found some alarming <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2015\/03\/150316092805.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">data<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Three-quarters of parents polled pointed to \u201coversharenting by another parent, including parents who shared embarrassing stories, gave information that could identify a child\u2019s location, or posted photos perceived as inappropriate\u201d. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers at the University of Rochester have shown how new technology can easily mine data from digital platforms. They were able to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/new-technology-can-mine-data-from-instagram-to-monitor-and-understand-teenage-drinking-patterns-126442\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">monitor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> drinking habits of teenagers, even predict <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">their drinking patterns from Instagram posts.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A New York Times report <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/08\/07\/opinion\/parents-social-media.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">warns<\/a> that \u201cby 2030, sharenting will play a role in two-thirds of identity fraud cases facing the young generation. Parents also risk unwittingly exposing their children to data broker profiling, hacking, facial recognition tracking, pedophilia and other threats to privacy and security.\u201d<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How did we get here? How \u2013 in a couple of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/retirement-blues-colleague-work-culture-anxiety-depression-spouse-older-generation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">generations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 did we go from fretting over the dangers of \u201cnazar lagna\u201d at a family gala, to shelling out a gazillion pictures and details of our children on social media networks?\u00a0<\/span>\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\">Thanks to sharenting, I know how much my social media friends and influencers love their children.<\/blockquote>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I decided to do my clairsentient thing, and here\u2019s what I saw. The kaajal ki dibbi<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was sucked into an anti-matter reactor. It emerged as a super high-tech blob of black, skipped blemish-free baby skin, and did a \u201cVoldermort on Professor Quirrel\u201d, becoming the all-seeing and documenting eye on the back of our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/features\/oppo-reno-10x-zoom-its-time-to-stop-snap-and-smell-the-roses\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">phones<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, I am not a sharenter \u2013 on the metric scale of coolness for millennial parents, my <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/akshay-kumar-the-gharelu-man-deshbhakt\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">husband<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and I are the uncoolest duo the stork ever made a delivery to. In fact, even after a year and some months, many of our friends are still finding out about the delivery. While I\u2019d like to imagine that I am the Harry to this Voldermort-Quirrel jodi, my lack of desire to sharent is simply an extension of my long-running social media\u00a0persona. No stranger needs to know things about me; I do not want them to (this includes the Aadhaar folks, wanting my bank account details).\u00a0I\u2019ve never wished my family members online; I talk to them directly. I have zero skills for the gush and mush, or tolerance for it.\u00a0I also take very bad selfies. In effect, that\u2019s zero skills for creating personal shareable online content.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, I see how sharenting can be liberating. It\u2019s a door to a parallel universe where things work like you want them to. You can imagine, create, and curate this phase in your life that has you going crazy in reality. As this wonderful comment piece in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/culture\/cultural-comment\/instagram-facebook-and-the-perils-of-sharenting\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Yorker<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> points out, \u201cThere certainly may be an element of proud boasting: \u2018Oh, this? It\u2019s just my <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/modern-family\/k-pop-band-bts-army-mother-daughter-relationship\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">daughter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s tastefully mismatched outfit,\u2019 \u2018Admire my toddler son\u2019s taste in jazz,\u2019 etc. But these carefully chosen glimpses of adorable bliss often do little more than mark a tranquil reprieve during an otherwise arduous day. The isolation of parenthood delivers one to strange places, especially in the early going, and you need your tribe.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sharenting is also helping a few of the many who can\u2019t have conventional jobs anymore,make careers as mommy (or daddy) influencers.\u00a0The lure of baby mascots is real even for acclaimed professionals. On Instagram, home-bred romance novelist <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/durjoydatta\/?hl=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Durjoy Dutta<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has his two-year-old to thank for a few thousands of views every day. An Indian-origin British Muslim model and fashion influencer,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UC9SlIYeOQb2vrTQ3opSCXkg\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amena Khan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been able to up her game with video blogs and Insta stories regularly featuring her two children. Gourmet chef <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/chefchinuvaze\/?hl=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shilarna (Chinu) Vaze<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a favourite to cater to soirees of Aamir Khan and Alia Bhatt, created great content for a brand selling premium packaged dry fruit. A natural progression since becoming a mommy, most of her posts \u2013 both personal and collaborations \u2013 revolve around <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/modern-family\/motherhood-fatherhood-family-parenting\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">motherhood<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and her daughter.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thanks to sharenting, I know how much my social media friends and influencers love their children. What they feed their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/modern-family\/fatherhood-babies-marriage-millennial\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">babies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And in effect, what foods they like or dislike. When and what were their first words, and other developmental milestones. What subject and what sport their children are good at, even their friends. Where they hang out. What&#8217;s their poison.\u00a0<\/span>\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\">Sharenting is a door to a parallel universe where things work like you want them to.<\/blockquote>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But I am too lazy to do anything with this information. Also of sane mind. No vendetta against anybody. A law-abiding member of society. Not a hacker, a scientist, a future law-enforcement profiler, or a digital media marketer. My target variable pay is not dependant on getting you to buy something or to vote for someone. I am no network scientist from Indiana University, who could be interested to profile the popularity quotient of your kids. But they did a swell job <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harpersbazaar.com\/fashion\/models\/news\/a12094\/fashion-week-supermodels-scientific-study\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">forecasting top models<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the 2015 New York Fashion Week from Instagram data.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The information all of you post is as good as trash to me, even though it\u2019s a \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/neurosciencenews.com\/neuroscience-research-social-media-3052\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">treasure trove<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d for the neuroscience folks funded by German Research Foundation. Digital footprint on social media holds for them clues to insights into users\u2019 curiosity and personality traits, their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/health\/depression-middle-class-diagnosis\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">emotional state<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and social conformity, even brain structure.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social media teetotallers or hibernators, do not feel left out. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/life-style\/gadgets-and-tech\/news\/facebook-twitter-personal-data-what-know-information-social-media-a8739376.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by scientists at the University of Vermont shows that privacy on social media is like second-hand <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/vice\/no-tobacco-day-smoking-habits-personality\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">smoke<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They say: \u201cIdentity and actions can be predicted from friends \u2013 undermining idea of individual choice on social media.\u201d It seems \u201ca company, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/indian-government-constitution-bjp-ministers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">government<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or other actor can accurately profile a person \u2013 think political party, favourite products, religious commitments \u2013 from their friends, even if they\u2019ve never been on social media or delete their account.\u201d<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this scheme of things, my clairsentient guess is, I am guinea pig number IMA19860906SDD, and my daughter, IMA2018****AAW for a study far North.\u00a0<\/span>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sharing (mostly oversharing) the joys and challenges of parenthood and documenting every bit of your children\u2019s lives online is now a social norm.
