At the end of a long day, you\u2019ll rarely find me hitting up a rock-climbing gym or a chic new cocktail bar. Instead, I am a lover of the great indoors, and my chosen state is inert: being a couch potato. I can\u2019t pretend to be a cultured introvert who likes to curl up with a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/netflix-books-readers-block\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">good book<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But give me a bowl of popcorn and a laptop loaded with streaming subscriptions, and I will spend a happy evening.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this golden age of entertainment, can you blame me for my boring habits? It\u2019s not just about the tremendous convenience of lolling around in your underwear as you select your own personal version of \u201cdinner and a show\u201d with a couple of clicks. There\u2019s also a cultural imperative to spend most of your spare hours watching TV. Every day, the questions come rapidfire from friends and colleagues: Did you binge <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/sacred-games-season-2-review-netflix-gangster-ganesh-gaitonde-sartaj\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sacred Games<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over the weekend? How have you not seen <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/mindhunter-review-sacred-games-david-fincher-thriller-netflix-jonathan-groff-holt-mccallany\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mindhunter<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> yet? If you haven\u2019t watched <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/fleabag-review-phoebe-waller-bridge-andrew-scott-female-coping\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fleabag<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, do you even really count?\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/jomo-over-fomo-how-to-find-the-joy-of-missing-out\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FOMO<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is real. Every month comes a sheaf of groundbreaking, life-changing, must-watch shows \u2014 required viewing for anyone who wants something to talk about at the parties they definitely aren\u2019t going to, because guess what, they stayed home to watch <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peaky Blinders<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But even this paradox is not what gets under my skin. It\u2019s the fact that so many of these amazing shows are not so much relaxing entertainment as they are a brutal exercise in sadomasochism.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The age of Peak TV has brought with it a new obsession with grim TV shows. A BBC culture feature titled \u201c<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/culture\/story\/20140331-has-tv-become-too-violent\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Has TV Become Too Violent?<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d offers an explanation for this phenomenon. The author writes, \u201cThe cliche that TV is the \u2018new novel\u2019 remains vital in one respect: the more literary, symbol-laden and existentially despairing a work is, the more likely it is to receive sober analysis and the respect of its creators\u2019 peers.\u201d So perhaps in a quest for critical acclaim, makers are turning to more dark themes? But the same article ends with the prediction that we\u2019re due for \u201ca new wave of quality optimism, of the best minds of the TV industry applying their artful sensibilities to the themes of joy, intricately adroit romance, and madcap generosity.\u201d That article was written in 2014, and it looks like we\u2019re still savouring suffering and strife on our screens.<\/span>\n\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1567269086.jpg\" alt=\"netflix_sacred_games\" width=\"775\" height=\"407\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-53978\" \/>\n<figcaption>\n<p>Wouldn\u2019t it be nice to tune into Netflix and be greeted by a bunch of hilarious and uplifting content, instead of a solid wall of doom and gloom? <\/p>\n<p>Sacred Games 2\/Netflix<\/p>\n<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Look, I\u2019m not saying that every show should be a cosy sitcom populated by well-lit, attractive people. This, after all, is not the \u201990s. But do they all have to be a gritty rural crime drama, or a chilling biography of a serial killer? For some bizarre reason, logging into my <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/technology\/netflix-chill-ai-takes-over-jobs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Netflix<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has become like stepping into a dark and terrible world \u2014 through the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/review-netflixs-black-mirror-getting-too-real\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black Mirror<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you might say. And surely we all have enough terrible, anxiety-inducing decisions to make IRL without subjecting ourselves to the trials of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/bandersnatch-review-diy-film\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bandersnatch<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From the horrors of a preventable disaster in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/hbo-chernobyl-review-disaster-propaganda\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chernobyl<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the perpetual rona-dhona of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Us<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it seems like today\u2019s TV is practically designed to send you into a tailspin of existential dread. Even once-innocent cartoons have turned into cautionary tales about the shittiness of human nature, modelled along the nihilistic lines of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/bojack-horseman-netflix-tv-show-animated-dark-comedy\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bojack<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Horseman<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rick and Morty<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Meanwhile, the few (relatively) lighthearted shows we have, like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Santa Clarita<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diet<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 a fun family comedy about a realtor who becomes a cannibalistic zombie \u2014 or the whimsical, animated <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tuca and Bertie<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, are cancelled before their time.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even the good old nature documentary, despite its gorgeous visuals and soothing narration, has succumbed to this depressing trend. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/our-planet-david-attenborough-nature-documentary\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our Planet<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for instance, is as stunning as it is incredibly sad, exploring the devastating impacts of climate change. One memorable scene showed dozens of confused walruses tumbling off a cliff to their deaths \u2014 in short, the stuff of nightmares.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the fate of David Attenborough\u2019s unfortunate walruses is not actually a dream. It\u2019s cold harsh truth. And this is the core of our TV problem \u2014 that art, sometimes too closely, imitates reality. Increasingly, dystopian hellscapes like those in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/the-handmaids-tale-season-2-margaret-atwood-review\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Handmaid&#8217;s Tale<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Westworld<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> draw ever-closer parallels to our reality, where archaic women\u2019s rights issues have reared their ugly heads again, and Elon Musk and Jack Ma argue about robots replacing humans. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/earth\/what-it-means-to-raise-a-child-in-the-era-of-climate-change\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Climate change<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, too, has only become more relevant, as have the warnings of historical retellings like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The People vs OJ Simpson<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which chronicles the institutional failures that led to the acquittal of the famous American football player.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\"><p>For TV creators to draw from the biggest concerns of that which surrounds them, and that resonates with their cynical, terrified audiences is only natural.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For TV creators to draw from the biggest concerns of that which surrounds them, and that resonates with their cynical, terrified audiences is only natural. You could even say it\u2019s their responsibility. But life is stressful enough without climbing onto the blood-spattered emotional rollercoaster of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/amazon-prime-mirzapur-lynching-women-violence-masochism\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mirzapur<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or the myriad other shows that insist on plumbing the depths of humanity. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maybe I\u2019m old-fashioned, but I still like to watch shows for entertainment and enjoyment, not just torture. Thankfully, as TV replaces cinema as the dominant medium for prestige dramas, films are swooping in to fill the void with lighthearted offerings like the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/health\/endgame-tonic-mental-health\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marvel Cinematic Universe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and endless sequels that require little emotional investment.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wouldn\u2019t it be nice to tune into Netflix and be greeted by a bunch of hilarious and uplifting content, instead of a solid wall of doom and gloom?
