The release of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crawl<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a story set in a flooded city during a hurricane, sees the protagonists striving to survive a hostile world of rising water, teeming with hungry alligators. And watching people desperately try to avoid becoming a hungry predator\u2019s dinner might be the purest form of schadenfreude out there.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having humans as a main course for a man-eating critter is a time-honoured cinematic tradition, which over the years, has also proved to be extremely malleable. For instance, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crawl<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> promises to be a taut, fast-paced thriller. But the creature feature genre has also accommodated films as diverse as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black Water<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an Australian horror film that creates tension as well as the critically acclaimed <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Babadook<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and also purely silly, campy fluff like the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Piranha<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sharknado <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">franchises. It\u2019s a genre that has something for everyone, from the serious critic looking to ruminate on the human condition to the escapist thrill-seeker who just wants an excuse to eat <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/grub\/crunchy-chicken-popcorn-recipe\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">popcorn<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while watching other people get eaten.<\/span>\n\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-53743\" src=\"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1566568469.png\" alt=\"crawl_movie\" width=\"985\" height=\"407\" \/>\n<figcaption>\n<p><i>Crawl<\/i> separates itself from the man vs animal films that preceded it \u2013 the dangers are no longer symbols of nature\u2019s untamed majesty, but now represent the consequences of our own actions.<\/p>\n<p>Ghost House Pictures<\/p>\n<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the heart of this genre\u2019s curiously universal appeal is its simplicity. These movies are like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/man-vs-wild-narendra-modi-bear-grylls-discovery-barack-obama\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Man vs Wild<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on steroids, where man always wins against overwhelming odds and audiences can leave the theatre happy, their schadenfreude sublimating into catharsis. Before every movie featured costumed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/m-night-shyamalans-superheroes-glass-review\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">superheroes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the creature feature reached its crowd-pleasing zenith with 1997\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anaconda<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the perfect late \u201990s blockbuster recipe of big-name stars<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Jennifer Lopez, Jon Voight, Owen Wilson, and Ice Cube), snappy one-liners, pulsating action scenes, and cutting-edge (for the time) special effects, which made the titular snake seem more terrifying and malevolent than it ever is in the wild. The ravenous creatures hunting us are stand-ins for the inscrutability of nature itself, and its propensity to turn frighteningly hostile if its delicate balance is upset.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are closer today to irreversibly upsetting that balance than ever before. As <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crawl <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hits screens, a spate of fires continue to burn across the anaconda\u2019s home, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/earth\/prayfortheamazon-why-the-brazil-forest-fires-need-our-attention-beyond-the-hashtag\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amazon rainforest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, threatening to send the green lungs of this planet up in smoke, along with our hopes of a habitable planet. Halfway across the world, fires of a similar scale are also raging across Siberian forests. As these blazes strip away Earth\u2019s green cover, they hasten the process of climate change, which will cause ocean levels to rise and freak weather events to become more frequent.<\/span>\n\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\"><p>But the release of Crawl proves that even as our relationship with nature evolves, the lure of a creature feature remains as strong as ever.<\/p><\/blockquote> \n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crawl<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it is a Category 5 Hurricane \u2013 exactly the kind of aberrant weather climate change will foster \u2013 that provides the catalyst for the movie\u2019s plot. The alligators that threaten our heroes then become the embodiment of climate change\u2019s destructive symptoms. Crucially, it is this aspect of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crawl <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that separates it from the man vs animal films that preceded it \u2013 the dangers are no longer symbols of nature\u2019s untamed majesty, but now represent the consequences of our own actions.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier films in the genre that were successful, portrayed nature as something that could not effectively be controlled, despite humanity\u2019s technological advancements. Perhaps the greatest creature feature of all time, Steven Spielberg\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jaws<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, summed up this attitude succinctly in one immortal line of dialogue: \u201cYou\u2019re gonna need a bigger boat.\u201d The great white shark that terrorised beachgoers in 1975 was presented as such an implacable foe that even the three experts dispatched to hunt it were unsure of their ability to get the job done. It was a time before <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/earth\/what-it-means-to-raise-a-child-in-the-era-of-climate-change\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">climate change<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had become part of our daily conversations. We hadn\u2019t yet seen Al Gore\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An Inconvenient Truth<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or the heart-breaking video of the starving polar bear digging through trash because his Arctic home was melting, or realised that the Amazon rainforest, one of the planet\u2019s greatest biodiversity hotspots, was aflame. And so, the shark, and nature itself, was something we had to strive against to survive. As long as studios keep making these movies, we\u2019ll keep watching them.
