{"id":5196,"date":"2016-04-23T13:35:06","date_gmt":"2016-04-23T08:05:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/?p=5196"},"modified":"2016-04-23T13:35:06","modified_gmt":"2016-04-23T08:05:06","slug":"fahadh-faasil-super-deluxe-kumbalangi-nights-malayalam-cinema-masculinity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/13.207.105.184\/?p=5196","title":{"rendered":"Why Are Women Going Gaga Over \u201cUnconventional\u201d Malayali Actor Fahadh Faasil?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"container page-content\"><p><span class=\"dropcap\">I\u2019<\/span><\/p><\/div><p> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">m going to go out on a limb and be the person who says this: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/kabir-singh-can-learn-violent-men-kumbalangi-nights\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kumbalangi Nights<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is an exquisite yet exceedingly hyped film. It is undoubtedly good, but it isn\u2019t among Malayalam cinema\u2019s best. What it does have though is Fahadh Faasil, who is unquestionably among Malayalam cinema\u2019s finest.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kumbalangi Nights<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a film he has also produced, Fahadh plays Shammi, the villain. In fact, the entire climax of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kumbalangi Nights<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> could be a twisted metaphor for Fahadh\u2019s career. Shammi is a conventional alpha male who is ultimately baited\u00a0 and trapped \u2013 quite literally \u2013 by his own <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/dehradun-student-death-toxic-masculinity-bullying\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">masculinity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Fahadh is the opposite: He is brazenly unconventional; even in a film that he has produced, he chooses not to hog maximum screen time. He is a performer not trapped by any notions of hyper-masculinity or herogiri, freeing him up to make fearless career choices.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In another memorable climactic moment in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kumbalangi Nights<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Shammi tells Saji and Bonnie that he will show them what a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/real-men-crying-emotional-sensitive-men-vulnerable\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">real man<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can do. In that one proclamation, he and Fahadh could be the same person. Shammi doesn\u2019t quite succeed in defining masculinity on screen, but Fahadh has. In his films, he is man enough not to be a man.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I stumbled upon Fahadh Faasil quite by chance. A few years back, a friend concerned by my Bollywood insularity gave me a DVD of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">22 Female Kottayam. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a movie which was inspired in spirit by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/andhadhun-review-sriram-raghavan-ayushmann-khurrana-tabu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sriram Raghavan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s gem, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ek Hasina Thi<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and which made Raghavan\u2019s film look like a breezy entertainer. In <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">22 Female Kottayam<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fahadh<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> plays Cyril, a guy who allows his girlfriend to be sexually violated twice by his boss and remains completely unrepentant even when she castrates him in an epic act of revenge. Pardon my poor pun, but it takes balls to harbour leading man aspirations and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">still<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> do this role.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What stood out for me was how <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fahadh<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> got under the skin of a decidedly evil character and yet played it normal. If <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/kaalakaandi-sacred-games-saif-ali-khan\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saif Ali Khan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> made evil look suave and cool, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fahadh <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">made it look regular and middle-class. It\u2019s this ability to slip effortlessly into a character that Aravind Nair, a communications professional and my Malayalam movie companion swears by, \u201cWhat sets him apart is the seeming ease with which he slips into roles that are quirky\u2026 to describe him as a versatile actor is a sorry clich\u00e9; his skill would be the manner in which he managed to evolve as an actor over a relatively short span of time.\u201d<\/span>\n\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\"><p>Pardon my poor pun, but it takes balls to harbour leading man aspirations and still do this role.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fahadh<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s evolution as an actor is a critical and visible part of his filmography. He made a disastrous debut in 2002 with a film called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kaiyethum<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doorathu. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The newcomer from a film family (his father is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/hrishikesh-mukherjees-gol-maal\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">filmmaker<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) was dismissed as a total dud. He fled to the US to study and the industry assumed that it was the last they had seen of him. But Fahadh wasn\u2019t one to play by convention: He came back, smarter and stronger and chose to give his own spin to masculinity.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an industry and at a time that is obsessed with perfectly sculpted appearances,\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fahadh<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has a receding hairline, no <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/features\/ab-teri-baari-behind-the-scenes-with-shashank-arora\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">six pack<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and painfully regular looks. He looks like everyone and anyone. The devil is in the smaller details; for Pallavi Suresh, a self-confessed Fahadh Faasil fan, it\u2019s how the actor\u2019s eyes can make any love story crackle with chemistry, \u201cHe makes you believe that perfect love stories are possible with imperfect bodies and faces, like in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maheshinte Prathikaram<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where he has a receding hairline and even a small belly and yet you want to be romanced by him.\u201d Sunita Vinod, another friend who has contributed to my love for Malayalam\u00a0 films coos, \u201cHe is a man, not a boy. Right from the first shot, he doesn\u2019t care two bits about what people make of him. That makes him hot.\u201d<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Incidentally, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maheshinte Prathikaraam <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is written by Syam Pushkaran, who also wrote <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kumbalangi Nights. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019d rate it higher than <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kumbalangi Nights<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Masquerading as a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/shashi-tharoor-ravichandran-ashwin-revenge-tipu-lagaan\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">revenge<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> saga, this film again turns on its head, the conventional tropes of masculinity. It teaches you what Shammi couldn\u2019t \u2013 what a real man should be. Even when Fahadh\u2019s Mahesh is driven by petty vengeance, he doesn\u2019t remain petty. He eventually exacts vengeance but forgets about it almost immediately. No gloating, no swagger \u2013 just what a man has got to do.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are still curious about the widespread Fahadh Faasil virus, especially on women, chances are that you haven\u2019t watched him in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bangalore Days <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">where he plays a closed, indifferent husband burdened by a tragic past. The film manages a casting coup of sorts, by also starring Dulquer Salman and Nivin Pauly, his incredibly talented peers in the Malayalam film industry. When we talk of Fahadh, Monika Nautiyal, a television producer I know, talks about a film I haven\u2019t watched yet: Last year\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Varthan<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In the film, Fahadh plays a man who has to deal with his wife\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/juhu-minor-rape-residents-morcha-police-mumbai\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rape<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and according to her, what makes his performance\u00a0 stand out is how he chooses not to stand out. \u201cThere is a normalcy in how his emotions shift\u2026 he doesn\u2019t behave like how we are conditioned to believe men react. The way Bollywood heroes do \u2013 showy and melodramatic.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not entirely surprising given that Fahadh rarely behaves like a \u201chero\u201d. The evidence is littered across his filmography, especially in the Tamil neo-noir<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/super-deluxe-tamil-film-vijay-sethupathi-fahadh-fasila\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Super Deluxe<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where he plays an aspiring actor and a conflicted husband who helps his wife dispose off the body of her ex-lover. It\u2019s a comically aware performance that doesn\u2019t sacrifice emotionally vulnerability either. One of my favourites however is, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thondimuthalum<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Driksakshiyum<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where Fahadh plays a chain snatcher who gobbles up his booty and some part of the film is devoted to the police trying to get him to poop out the chain. It\u2019s as absurd as it sounds, but it still manages to be real. Fahadh was awarded National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for the movie and yet he chose not to show up for the awards as a mark of protest when it was revealed that the Indian President would not be handing out the awards to each and every winner.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a climate where actors fawn over the establishment, Fahadh continues to go by what he thinks is right. Maybe just for that reason alone, Fahadh Faasil is the hero Indian <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/movies-indians-theatre-people\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cinema<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> needs.<\/span>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In an industry that is obsessed with perfectly sculpted appearances, Fahadh Faasil has a receding hairline, no six pack, and painfully regular looks.
