{"id":5080,"date":"2016-05-21T19:10:38","date_gmt":"2016-05-21T13:40:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/?p=5080"},"modified":"2016-05-21T19:10:38","modified_gmt":"2016-05-21T13:40:38","slug":"kabir-singh-can-learn-violent-men-kumbalangi-nights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/13.207.105.184\/?p=5080","title":{"rendered":"What Kabir Singh Can Learn about Violent Men From Kumbalangi Nights"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span class=\"dropcap\">I<\/span>n the aftermath of the <\/p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/kabir-singh-shahid-kapoor-misogyny-arjun-reddy\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kabir Singh<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fiasco a couple of weeks back, I was having a conversation with a friend about whether or not a film should be allowed to portray and joke about &#8220;toxic masculinity&#8221;. My friend was vehemently against it; he believed that under the guise of labelling these portrayals of dangerous men as \u201craw\u201d and \u201chonest\u201d, these films get away by giving its \u201chero\u201d alpha moments full of guttural, impulsive and violent reactions. And they don\u2019t comment on the consequences of this harmful behaviour. I nodded my head in agreement, adding that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kabir Singh <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was perhaps, every incel\u2019s wet dream.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But later, the question he asked, lingered in my head: Could movies really depict <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/bro-code-toxic-masculinity-woke-men\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">toxic masculinity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> without glorifying it? Over the years, mainstream cinema \u2013 take <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tere Naam<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for example \u2013 has been insistent on making one believe that might not be possible. But I found my answer in Madhu C Narayanan\u2019s debut feature, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kumbalangi Nights<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a film that found a second life when Prime Video picked it up last week.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Set in a fishing town near Kochi, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kumbalangi Nights<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is divided into two camps: One camp consists of four brothers \u2013 Bobby, Saji, Bonny and Frankie \u2013 living in a cramped, unconstructed house without a door. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/modern-family\/raksha-bandhan-sisters-protectors-brothers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brothers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are in a constant fight with each other as well as with their pasts. According to Frankie (Mathew Thomas), the youngest of the four brothers, it is the worst house in the neighborhood because it is a metaphorical wasteland of conflict. They\u2019re essentially living in a world without a woman (their mother left the house after their father\u2019s death).\u00a0<\/span>\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\">As evidenced from the Kabir Singh discourse, the problem isn\u2019t that filmmakers seem to be competing against each other for telling more and more stories about violent men. But that in all these stories, these men, despite their violence, are allowed to be heroes.<\/blockquote>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other side of the backwaters, is a family of three women \u2013 Babymol, Simmy and Sathi, \u2013 with seemingly happy lives that is soon to be shaken by the arrival of a masculine figure in their house, Shammi (Fahadh Faasil). Shammi, the film\u2019s creepy villain, is the best embodiment of how the standards of masculinity set by a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/upper-class-feminist-benefits-patriarchy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">patriarchal society<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is intertwined with violence. Deluded about his masculinity that\u2019s rooted in a freakish control of people, especially women, Shammi announces himself\u00a0 as \u201cThe Complete Man\u201d endowed with the responsibility to take care of three \u201chapless\u201d women.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Understandably, Narayanan builds on the sharp contrast between the two camps and questions the audience&#8217;s perception of masculinity and the idea of male identity through the eyes of its women. In a scene, Bobby (Shane Nigam), the younger brother tries to kiss his girlfriend Babymol (Anna Ben) in a theatre despite her not consenting to it. When she slaps him, Bobby storms away, yelling, \u201cI am a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/mard-ko-dard-nahi-hota-vasan-bala-retro-films\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">man<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">!\u201d and leaves the theatre in a fit of rage. Not only does <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kumbalangi Nights <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not fall into the temptation of giving Bobby\u2019s transgressions a pass or playing it up for comic relief. But it also provides a context for it \u2013 a kind of masculinity that thrives on the desire to own women.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In yet another scene, the director subverts one of the oldest tropes of mainstream Malayalam cinema: The powerful elder brother who can never be vulnerable. Saji (Soubin Shahir), the eldest brother, considers himself responsible for the unexpected death of his friend Murugan and is almost on the verge of a meltdown when he turns to Frankie and says, &#8220;I think I am losing it. I need help. Can you take me to a doctor?\u201d It\u2019s a cry for help that most Malayalam films don\u2019t often afford their macho leads.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is perhaps the biggest achievement of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kumbalangi Nights.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> That it provides a counter-argument to whether films should portray violent men. In fact, it offers a roadmap. As evidenced from the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kabir Singh<\/span><\/i> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/despite-bollywood-influences-i-am-raising-two-feminist-sons-heres-how-to-do-it\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">discourse<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the problem isn\u2019t that filmmakers seem to be competing against each other for telling more and more stories about violent men. But that in all these stories, these men, despite their violence, are allowed to be heroes. And instead of decoding their toxic traits, these films disguise them as harmless \u201cflaws\u201d that do little to expand our understanding of what breeds toxic masculinity.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kumbalangi Nights<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> does the opposite: It forces men and women, to stop, stare, and contend with the burdens of toxic masculinity. It eloquently dissects, critiques, and punishes the male identity that deems itself superior. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kumbalangi Nights<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> then, is all about the consequences that every other film shirks. As this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.firstpost.com\/entertainment\/as-kabir-singh-battles-brickbats-a-look-at-malayalam-cinemas-recent-subversion-of-toxic-alpha-males-6915701.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Firstpost piece<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> points out, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kumbalangi Nights <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not only succeeds in overthrowing the celebrated <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/middle-aged-indian-man-ageing\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alpha male<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but also points out that in theory he is the villain of the story.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are our films ready for this new chapter?<\/span>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After the release of Kabir Singh, everyone had one question on their minds: Could movies really depict toxic masculinity without glorifying it?
