At what point do you introduce loss and grief to an impressionable mind? Do you wait until their first real-world brush with death, to explain the inevitability of it all? And where do you find the right words? Luckily, that\u2019s what we have stories for. The tales, myths, and legends we grow up with form the basis for our understanding of the world we occupy. And for the last 25 years, the cultural touchstone for most children\u2019s first brush with death has been Mufasa\u2019s dramatic fall into the gorge in Disney\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/hakuna-matata-disney-the-lion-king-soundtrack-donald-glover\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lion King<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 2019 remake of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lion King<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which swaps out the hand-drawn animation for breathtakingly realistic CGI, revisits this moment in painful detail, as if it wasn\u2019t already burned into our collective memory. Given how <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lion King<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is one of the first movies I have a conscious memory of ever watching, I considered it my duty to watch the film on the first day. The theatre was packed. There were people of all ages; gaggles of schoolchildren, world-weary <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/features\/restless-and-proud-why-millennials-continue-to-chase-newness\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">millennials<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in shirts bearing the faces of Simba and Scar, and couples who had brought their young children in tow to experience the same film that defined their childhoods. Together, we were spellbound by the timeless story, which hasn\u2019t aged a day.<\/span> \n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1563549121.jpg\" alt=\"musafa_and_scar\" width=\"724\" height=\"407\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-52493\" \/>\n\n<figcaption>\n<p>As Simba climbed down into the gorge, and found Mufasa\u2019s broken body lying in the dust, I heard the kid one more time. \u201cNoooo!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Walt Disney Pictures\/ Fairview Entertainment<\/p>\n<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the dreadful moment approached, and the wildebeest stampede carried away Mufasa under thundering hooves after he rescued Simba from the same fate, I became aware of a kid sitting a few rows behind me. \u201cWhere\u2019d he go?\u201d he cried out, oblivious to theatre etiquette (which can be forgiven since he was probably five years old). The background score grew more tragic, the string section tugging on tear glands in every seat. \u201cWhere\u2019d he go!?\u201d the question rang out again, more urgently. As Simba climbed down into the gorge, and found Mufasa\u2019s broken body lying in the dust, I heard the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/indian-parents-children-education-retirement\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> one more time. \u201cNoooo!\u201d<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those parents definitely had their hands full consoling their distraught offspring on the ride home. But the difficult conversation that Mufasa\u2019s death must have entailed is an important one for parents to have with their children. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lion King<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provides its young audience their first glimpse of the irreversible nature of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/dehradun-student-death-toxic-masculinity-bullying\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">death<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As Simba comes to terms with his father\u2019s demise, his emotions run the gamut from pain, guilt, anger, to finally acceptance. When a long-dead Mufasa appears to Simba in the clouds and tells him to go fulfil his destiny, it drives home the point that some losses cannot be overturned, but moving forward is our only option. Living through Simba\u2019s grief with him as children was a softer introduction to such weighty topics, one that prepared us for more stark encounters down the road.<\/span>\n\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\"><p>Those parents definitely had their hands full consoling their distraught offspring on the ride home.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mufasa\u2019s death leaves me disconsolate, no matter how many times I witness it. It hurts just as much in the modern version as the classic. But coming to terms with it when I first watched <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lion King<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> set the foundation for how I would deal with the loss of my grandparents later in life. Children\u2019s films are littered with many such teaching moments. There\u2019s the off-screen death of Bambi\u2019s mother in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bambi<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a barracuda eating Nemo\u2019s mother in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/doodle\/finding-nemo-world-oceans-day-plastic-sea\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finding Nemo<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the death of Hiccup\u2019s father Stoick the Vast in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to Train Your Dragon 2<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In 2017, a study published in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/disney-films-help-both-children-and-adults-talk-about-death-2017-10?IR=T\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of Death and Dying<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> analysed character deaths in children\u2019s films. \u201cWe believe that Disney and Pixar films are popular and accessible for children and adults so that a difficult conversation can begin in a less threatening way earlier in life\u2026 It\u2019s not our intent to have these conversations with a three-year-old, but as children mature, then the films fit naturally into that growth,\u201d says Kelly Tenzek, co-author of the study.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No matter how painful it may seem, Mufasa\u2019s death in<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The Lion King<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is actually essential viewing. Sometimes, you can\u2019t avoid the hurt. But that\u2019s okay. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/sad-bollywood-songs-make-life-bearable\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sadness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is just as natural as happiness, which is what <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lion King<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> teaches us.
