Test cricket has died a thousand deaths. One Day International cricket, the shortest format until <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/sports\/india-west-indies-cricket-world-cup-2019-men\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T20<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> usurped it and sent it to sulk in a corner, has constantly been fighting for life. Even the ICC World Cup, its showpiece event, came in for criticism because it featured only nine nations. After a tepid start, the excitement picked up toward the end, but it was the final that cut human emotions into a million pieces.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Until Sunday, we were <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/sports\/india-world-cup-semi-final-loss-heartbreak\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mourning India\u2019s exit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the tournament, as if it was some sort of travesty that we were robbed of a third World Cup triumph. After Sunday, we grudgingly accepted that New Zealand deserved a spot in the final more than India.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The finale of the 2019 World Cup will be recounted for years and years to come. It single-handedly lifted the format and made us realise that it isn\u2019t going anywhere just yet. It will be dissected and justifications will be sought. But it will never be comprehended. Trying to analyse it is like trying to analyse a miracle. Moments like these in sport are few and far between, when there was almost no margin between the victors and the defeated.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There were certain things we learned as the match was progressing. It was as if someone was writing rules on the fly, trying their best to write a conclusion to a script that had no logical end.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Did you know that if the ball ricochets off the bat and goes for a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/sports\/world-cup-final-boundary-rule-icc-eng-vs-nz-cwc-2019\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">boundary<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it\u2019s four runs? I most certainly didn\u2019t.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Did you know if the Super Over ended in a tie, the side that scored more boundaries is declared the winner? That\u2019s like going to the gates of heaven and letting your entry be decided by how many cartwheels you did in your life. The rules deciding the final seemed like rules written for a moment no one thought would ever occur on a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/sports\/cricket-world-cup-india-die-hard-fanatic-2\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cricket field<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, like terms and conditions that no one has ever read suddenly coming to life.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-52361\" src=\"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1563279946.jpg\" alt=\"new_zealand_world_cup\" width=\"594\" height=\"338\" \/>\n<figcaption>\n<p>>What if England and New Zealand shook hands after the tied Super Over, called it a day, and both teams lifted the trophy?<\/p>\n<p>Stu Forster-IDI\/IDI via Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If common sense had prevailed and the game was not bound by some obscure rule, the Cup would have been shared by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/sports\/india-vs-new-zealand-the-forever-underdogs-world-cup\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Zealand<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/sports\/world-cup-2019-england-south-africa-ben-stokes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">England<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the world would have gone to sleep happy.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is a saying that goes, \u201cIf you want to hear God laugh, tell him your plans.\u201d Sometimes, all the best-laid plans in the world can come undone by life\u2019s randomness.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When setting the schedule, probably no one stopped to cross-check if the World Cup finals would clash with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/sports\/roger-federer-wimbledon-tennis-rafael-nadal-french-open\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wimbledon finals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. When that happened, no one knew both games would be so brilliant that we would be torn between which to watch.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everyone made plans for a super Sunday where India would play the finals and crackers would be burst into the night.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s planning, the rational brain thinking.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India crashed out. England and New Zealand played the finals that ended in a tie and a Super Over that also ended in a tie.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/sports\/roger-federer-fan-rafael-nadal-2019-french-open-semifinal\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roger Feder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 37 years old and raging against the dying of the light, decided to have another go at Wimbledon glory. His opponent \u2014 the inimitable Novak Djokovic, has been banging at the doors of immortality all this while. During the fifth set, with 12 games apiece, the match was decided with a tiebreaker, the first time the rule has been used to decide a final.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s life. It\u2019s random. No amount of data and planning and analysis and preparation can overcome it.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the games were played, the reactions of cricket lovers, tennis fans, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/sports\/india-vs-new-zealand-world-cup-loss\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sports superfans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were alike \u2014 no one deserved to lose either match.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-52362\" src=\"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1563279948.jpg\" alt=\"roger_federer_wimbledon\" width=\"594\" height=\"396\" \/>\n<figcaption>\n<p>Roger Feder, 37 years old and raging against the dying of the light, decided to have another go at Wimbledon glory.<\/p>\n<p>Laurence Griffiths\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What if Federer and Djokovic shared the trophy? Would there have been an uproar or would tennis be declared the ultimate winner?\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What if England and New Zealand shook hands after the tied Super Over, called it a day, and both teams lifted the trophy? Would the world have cried foul? Why does winning always have to be singular, one team, one <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/sports\/jofra-archer-strike-bowler-england-world-cup-finals-cricket\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">player<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I hate it when big matches in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/sports\/women-football-world-cup-france-2019-equality\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">football<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are decided by penalties. Two sides give it their all and finally, everything comes down to which player kicks the ball into a net or which goalkeeper makes the save of a lifetime.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The more you try to result-proof sport, the more you end up with mind-numbing rules like the side that scores more boundaries wins. What if, by some random twist of fate, both sides have scored the same number of boundaries? How do you then decide the victor? Ask two players to run a 100-metre dash?\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In life, there are no winners. Jeff Bezos might be the world\u2019s richest man but Bill Gates, the second-richest man, is working to eradicate preventable illnesses. If we were to pick a winner, who will it be? If <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/v\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wealth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> isn\u2019t even a measure of victory, then what constitutes a winner?\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\"><p>But in sport, as in life, the goal isn\u2019t to always have a victor.<\/p><\/blockquote> \n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are drawn to sport like moths to a light bulb, because on some level, it represents the zenith of human potential and emotion. There is no extent to which one can try and engineer the rules to ensure a victor emerges at the end of it.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But in sport, as in life, the goal isn\u2019t to always have a victor.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes, we just need to celebrate performances so great and let the moment of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/sports\/1983-india-west-indies-cricket-world-cup-victory\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">victory<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> be shared among all the worthy competitors.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All this while, we thought sport can\u2019t exist without a winner.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But two matches on a Sunday we will never forget and will go down in history as two of the greatest ever to be played in their respective sports, made us realise something else \u2014 sport can exist without a loser. In his retirement speech, a tearful Andr\u00e9 Agassi told the crowd, \u201cThe scoreboard says I have lost but it doesn\u2019t show what I have won.\u201d<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roger Federer and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/sports\/kane-williamson-new-zealand-captain-england-world-cup-loss\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kane Williamson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> could have reprised those words.
