The slate of films and roles on offer were a clear indication that the industry is evolving. For the first time in years, Yami Gautam \u2013 an actress whose filmography can be best described as playing the token \u201cbrutalised or dead girl\u201d (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Badlapur, Kaabil, Action Jackson<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) \u2013 didn\u2019t end up dying or getting brutalised in one. In <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uri<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Gautam just played an undercover agent with really not much to do, which at this point, should be considered progress. Speaking of which, Bollywood also welcomed back director Soumik Sen \u2013 accused of sexual harassment last year \u2013 with the pointlessly boring <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why Cheat India<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, proving that even outsiders deserve innumerable second chances. And just to balance things out, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/bollywoods-a-sellout-did-we-really-need-cobrapost-to-tell-us-that\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tiger Shroff<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> let his leg muscles do the acting in yet another big-budget vehicle even as female representation continued being a joke in Bollywood.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps, the best evidence of how Hindi films have gone out of their way to restore our faith in the industry can be gleaned from the criminally limited screen time that actresses were permitted to have in some of the year\u2019s biggest scripts. At least, in the first six months, Bollywood outdid itself when it came to ensuring that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/kabir-singh-shahid-kapoor-misogyny-arjun-reddy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">female<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> actors get accorded the same treatment as a second-hand lamp from a neighbourhood furniture market. After all, what\u2019s not to admire about Hindi film writers being experimental and ambitious with their storytelling but still being unable to write a coherent character arc for a woman, even in 2019?<\/span>\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\">The slate of films and roles on offer were a clear indication that the industry is evolving.<\/blockquote>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given that this is a season for half-yearly report cards, I decided to draw up a list of the ten worst offenders \u2013 films that released between January and June of this year, comprising the most bizarre, ridiculous, and downright exploitations of not just a female presence but also of an actress. These <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/10th-anniversary-luck-by-chance-zoya-akhtar\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">movies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are ranked by worst offenses to quite bad ones, keeping in mind the length of the role, whether the actress is given dialogues, how replaceable the character is with an inanimate object, whether her presence depends on the existence of the hero, and to what extent the character exists only to serve the hero. Nine out of these 10 films are written by men:<\/span>\n\n<b>Barkha Sengupta in <\/b><b><i>PM Narendra Modi<\/i><\/b><b>: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barkha Sengupta appears in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/pm-narendra-modi-review-vivek-oberoi-omung-kumar-hindutva-biopic\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PM Narendra Modi<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, aka this year\u2019s most useless contribution to the propaganda genre, for exactly one scene and has zero dialogues. In the sequence, a young Narendra Modi\u2019s (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/vivek-oberoi-saathiya-company-pm-modi\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vivek Oberoi<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)\u2019s parents come to her house to fix their wedding. All goes well until Modi announces his decision to become a sanyasi and not a husband. The camera pans on the actress\u2019s frowning, grief-stricken face for exactly a second, before completely forgetting about her. Sengupta could have asked her wax statue to fill in for her in this scene and there would have no way of knowing. To paraphrase Paresh Rawal\u2019s sentiments from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uri<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: This is the new India, that will cast an actress in a film and ignore her as well.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<b>Last word:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Barkha Sengupta\u2019s role wouldn\u2019t exist if<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> PM Narendra Modi <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">had no hero.<\/span>\n\n<b>Achint Kaur in <\/b><b><i>The<\/i><\/b> <b><i>Tashkent Files<\/i><\/b><b> and <\/b><b><i>Kalank<\/i><\/b><b>:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It\u2019s not a good year to be Achint Kaur. The actress acted in two wildly contrasting back-to-back outings and was reduced to an afterthought in both of them. In Vivek Agnihotri\u2019s film, Kaur, like Sengupta in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/modi-supporter-office-meltdown\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PM Narendra Modi<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, was not given a single dialogue. What makes the situation more infuriating is the fact that Agnihotri chose to have Kaur throughout the film: Her job was limited to playing wife (the film gives her no identity beyond \u201cMrs Natarajan\u2019) to Naseerudin Shah\u2019s Mr Natarajan by glaring and smiling on demand whenever her husband hatched an evil plan. Even extras in a film get to do more than what Kaur got to bring to the table in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tashkent Files<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-52347\" src=\"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1563268687.png\" alt=\"kalank\" width=\"724\" height=\"407\" \/>\n<figcaption>\n<p><em>Kalank<\/em> has Achint Kaur playing a human version of Google Maps.<\/p>\n<p>Fox Star Studios\/ Dharma Productions\/ Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment<\/p>\n<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Things got only slightly better in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/kalank-review-ailia-bhatt-abhishek-varman-varun-dhawan-baahubali\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kalank<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where Kaur played a character who had three dialogues. Clad in all-white (she could have very well been an ancestor of the Abbas-Mustan family), Kaur\u2019s Saroj is the official nanny of the Chaudhry family. The purpose of having Saroj in the film is for her to shadow Roop (Alia Bhatt), the new daughter-in-law whenever she steps out and warn her when she arrives at the wrong destination. Basically, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kalank<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has Kaur playing a human version of Google Maps. Bonus: She is the first person to get killed off in the film\u2019s climax.<\/span>\n\n<b>Last word:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Achint Kaur wouldn\u2019t have a role in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/the-tashkent-files-review-vivek-agnihotri\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tashkent Files <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">without the hero, but might still have a pointless existence in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kalank<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span>\n\n<b>Disha Patani and Sonali Kulkarni in <\/b><b><i>Bharat<\/i><\/b><b>: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not enough that the 44-year-old National Award-winning actress, Sonali Kulkarni, is reduced to the background, playing the stock teary-mother-devoid-of-an-identity to 53-year-old <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/salman-khan-mocking-priyanka-chopra-bharat\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Salman Khan <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for one half of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bharat<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before being conveniently killed off. Or that Salman Khan plays the eponymous titular character from the age of 18 until 70. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/bharat-review-salman-khan-katrina-kaif-ali-abbas-zafar\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bharat <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">goes one step further and also gifts him a love interest, Radha (Disha Patani) who is so replaceable that it makes Vijay Shankar\u2019s standing in the Indian cricket team look good. Her arc in the movie is limited to one sexually suggestive item song followed by a goodbye dialogue that goes \u201cKisi bhi Radha ko uska Krishna nahi milta.\u201d Are most Hindi film screenwriters still allergic to seeing a woman character as a person instead of a shoddy device?<\/span>\n\n<b>Last word: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neither Disha Patani nor Sonali Kulkarni\u2019s roles would exist if there was no Bharat.<\/span>\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\">It doesn\u2019t take long for it to dawn that Kabir Singh doesn\u2019t see Preeti as a person. Instead, it views her as a male fantasy.<\/blockquote>\n<b>Kiara Advani in <\/b><b><i>Kabir Singh<\/i><\/b><b>: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whatever little we learn of Preeti in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/kabir-singh-review-arjun-reddy-remake-shahid-kapoor-sandeep-reddy\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kabir Singh<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is only informed from the hero\u2019s perspective. We never seem to be fully able to read Preeti or get to know her. Here\u2019s what the movie never tells us about Preeti: What are her likes and dislikes? Did she ever realise that she mistook violence for love? Did she become a doctor? It doesn\u2019t take long for it to dawn that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kabir Singh <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">doesn\u2019t see Preeti as a person. Instead, it views her as a male fantasy missing for over 90 minutes in a supposed &#8220;love story&#8221;.<\/span>\n\n<b>Last word: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kiara Advani\u2019s character wouldn\u2019t exist to get slapped if there was no hero in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kabir Singh<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span>\n\n<b>Gul Panag (and her unnamed girlfriend) in <\/b><b><i>Student of the Year 2<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Gul Panag and gay women are the latest victims of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/karan-johar-cant-launch-any-more-starkids-tells-deepveer-to-wait-a-while\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dharma Productions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 performance of progressiveness. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Student of the Year 2<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has the actress play a gay coach, a scenario that isn\u2019t at all subtle about being an outright woke fantasy. Neither is Panag shown coaching the students for the inter-school competition (Ironically, girls don\u2019t play sports in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SoTY 2<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) nor does her orientation have any bearing on the proceedings of the film. Panag, who gets not more than three scenes, is written in the script only for one offensive \u201ccoming out\u201d sequence that mines comedy from Rohan (Tiger Shroff) being tricked into making a move on Panag and being admonished by her unnamed girlfriend, who promptly disappears after this scene.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<b>Last word:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Gul Panag\u2019s role could not exist in the universe of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/student-of-the-year-2-review-tiger-shroffs-muscles-ananya-pandey-tara-sutaria\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Student of the Year 2 <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">if it had no hero.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<b>Isha Talwar in <\/b><b><i>Article 15<\/i><\/b><b>:<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/article-15-review-caste-ayushmann-khurrana-anubhav-sinha-dalits\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Article 15<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has arguably, the most surface-level description of a female lead in a Hindi film this year. In one of the opening scenes, Ayan (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/meri-pyaari-bindu-parineeti-chopra-ayushmann-khurana-yash-raj-films\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ayushmann Khurrana<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) introduces Aditi (Isha Talwar) as someone who \u201cwrites on human rights and equality\u201d. It\u2019s shallow not only because we never see Aditi writing on either of the subjects but also because this choice of profession is used to ultimately serve the film\u2019s hero and not her identity. Moreover, the problem with Aditi is that she is reduced to such a helpless periphery character (much like Sayani Gupta\u2019s Gaura), even when the film\u2019s universe provides ample scope for her to be more fleshed out. There\u2019s no better evidence of the second-hand treatment meted out to Aditi than in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Article 15\u2019s<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> penultimate scene where it is Ayan who educates (rather bizarrely) a young girl about rape and reveals that her brother raped a young girl. Aditi is only made to look on.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<b>Last word:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Isha Talwar\u2019s role wouldn\u2019t exist in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Article 15<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> without its hero.<\/span>\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-52349\" src=\"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1563268934.jpg\" alt=\"kesari\" width=\"724\" height=\"407\" \/>\n<figcaption>\n<p>ParineetiChopra\u2019s generic and forgettable supportive wife act is a filmi equivalent of any Shutterstock stock image.<\/p>\n<p>Dharma Productions\/ Cape of Good Films\/ Azure Entertainment\/ Zee Studios\n<\/p>\n<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n\n<b>Parineeti Chopra in <\/b><b><i>Kesari<\/i><\/b><b>:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/kesari-review-saragarhi-akshay-kumar-sikh-soldiers-afghan-tribesmen\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kesari<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a flashback has to be manufactured in the narrative to even entertain the idea of a female presence. This is the kind of film that believes that it\u2019s unacceptable to have a war film without a love-ballad, and a love-ballad without a young actress romancing an actor twice her age. Chopra\u2019s generic and forgettable supportive wife act is a filmi equivalent of any Shutterstock stock image. What\u2019s worse is that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kesari\u2019s<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> writers don\u2019t tell us whether she is a memory or a ghost.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<b>Last word:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Parineeti Chopra\u2019s role wouldn\u2019t exist if<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Kesari <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">had no hero.<\/span>\n\n<b>Mouni Roy in <\/b><b><i>Romeo Akbar Walter<\/i><\/b><b> (RAW):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This is the second inconsequential role Mouni Roy has been saddled with, after last year\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/gold-movie-review-akshay-kumar-independence-day\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gold<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This time around, the actress plays an undercover cop whose only assignment seems to reappearing on screen whenever her boyfriend needs to be mothered, kissed, or when the movie needs a romantic ballad.<\/span>\n\n<b>Last word: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mouni Roy\u2019s role wouldn\u2019t exist in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/romeo-akbar-walter-review-john-abraham-robbie-grewal\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RAW<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> without its hero.<\/span>\n\n<b>Kalki Koechlin in <\/b><b><i>Gully Boy<\/i><\/b><b>: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every time I watch <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/gully-boy-review-ranveer-singh-alia-bhatt-zoya-akhtar\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gully Boy<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, I become increasingly convinced that it is a wonderful yet frustrating film. On one hand, it has Safeena (Alia Bhatt), a fully realised female lead whose distinctive personality doesn\u2019t exist at the mercy of the amount of screen time <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/azaadi-gully-boy-kanhaiya-kumar\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gully Boy<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> accords her. And on the other hand, it has Sky (Kalki Koechlin), a stock manic-pixie privileged girl who is stripped off all individuality. Unlike Koechlin\u2019s similarly brief turn in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 another Zoya Akhtar outing \u2013 where her role eked out humanity in a stereotype, Sky is unbelievably vapid; all of her actions exist to humanise the hero. It might not be wholly inaccurate to suspect that the only reason Sky is a woman is because of that kissing scene.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<b>Last word: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kalki Koechlin\u2019s role depends on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gully Boy\u2019s<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hero.<\/span>\n\n<b>Special mentions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Kirti Kulhari in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/uri-film-review-vicky-kaushal-indian-army-modi-election\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uri<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Tara Sutaria in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Student of The Year 2<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> whose edited-out roles puts the distress in damsel-in-distress.<\/span>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s 2019 and yet in some of the year\u2019s biggest scripts, actresses continued to play second fiddle.
