It\u2019s even easier to forget that in the first five years of his acting career, Deol managed an acting coup of sorts. He starred in almost back-to-back films directed by<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/imtiaz-ali-tamasha-ranbir-kapoor-dreams-failure\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Imtiaz Ali<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Reema Kagti, Dibakar Banerjee, Navdeep Singh, and Anurag Kashyap \u2013 filmmakers, who almost a decade later, have gone on to become institutions. Yet, even in 2019, it\u2019s hard to slot Deol as an actor. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not that Deol hasn\u2019t been versatile enough: The actor debuted as a romantic hero in Ali\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Socha Na Tha<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, transformed into a goofy Parsi husband in Kagti\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a small-time thief in Banerjee\u2019s<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/10-years-of-oye-lucky-lucky-oye-hindi-movies-dysfunctional-superchor\/\"> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">!<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a detective father of a five-year-old in Singh\u2019s<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Manorama Six Feet Unde<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">r until playing the definitive role of his career. In <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dev.D<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Kashyap\u2019s modern retelling of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay\u2019s Devdas \u2013 Deol famously played Dev, the privileged, indifferent, alcoholic son of a rich Delhi businessman torn between two women: Paro and Chanda. These early films resemble the slate of an actor who peaked even before his career took off. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dev.D <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was 10 years ago. Today, Deol\u2019s impish charm has uncharacteristically weathered down. His filmography is now littered with peculiar outings that primarily serve the cachet of being <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/nanu-ki-jaanu-review-deolification-of-abhay-deol\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abhay Deol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> rather than doing justice to his acting skills. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The patterns are unmissable. The actor backs new filmmakers \u2013 all the above-mentioned directors formed their distinctive styles in the movies they did with Deol. He nonchalantly stars in middle-of-the road cinema \u2013 devoid of larger-than-life song and dance. And he continues to seek pleasure in acting in the kind of experimental films that you might just not end up watching. <\/span>\n\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\"><p>Like Rahul Khanna, Milind Soman, and R Madhavan, Deol has joined the ranks of actors exploiting social media currency to create a brand-new image.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deol\u2019s last release, Faraz Haider\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/nanu-ki-jaanu-review-deolification-of-abhay-deol\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nanu Ki Jaanu<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, was over a year ago<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The movie, an uneven romantic comedy, underperformed at the box-office. This week, the actor makes his Netflix debut with Sachin Yardi\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chopsticks<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, another low-stake comedy in which he plays Artist, a professional cook, and conman of refined taste. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cComedy is all about tragedy,\u201d Deol tells me, when we meet at a suburban five-star hotel room in Mumbai, where he remains cooped up in between promotional interviews. I\u2019m immediately reminded of Kabir Dewan from Zoya Akhtar\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/outdoors\/road-trip-losing-friends-zindagi-na-milegi-dobara\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> inarguably Deol\u2019s most mainstream \u2013 and commercially profitable \u2013 outing. In the road-trip film, a grown-up, existentialist version of the cultish <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dil Chahta Hai<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we see Deol as the affable, mild-mannered friend whose life invariably gets sidelined while he is busy meditating between his two emotionally handicapped best friends. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On paper, the actor is the film\u2019s comic relief: a future bridegroom on a bachelor trip that is threatened by his uptight fiance. Deol even dials up the histrionics \u2013 his face is perennially scrunched up in expressions that evoke pity and hilarity in equal measure and his body-language is unbelievably fluid. But more importantly, he single-handedly lends <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ZNMD\u2019s <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">central theme of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/helicopter-parents-indian-millennials-dependency\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adult cluelessness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> an urgent dignity with his vulnerable act of an escapist who slowly unravels, revealing just how scared he is to even hear himself think. It\u2019s poetic that it is perhaps one of the befitting examples that fit Deol\u2019s definition of comedy.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 43-year-old actor is undeniably charismatic. When we meet, Deol is lounging on the sofa, his eyes peeled on his phone, a dimple on his face. His face is now tempered with a beard that seems almost sculpted to precision. \u201cComedy is also easier to sell,\u201d he says, when we start talking about <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chopsticks<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a film that instantly appealed to him because of how much the script made him laugh. By his own admission, filmmakers approach him for a \u201clot of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/no-laughing-matter-indian-comedy-scene\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">comedy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d \u2013 although most of it is not particularly to his liking, \u201cThe comedy I personally like is dark comedy. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hit the nail with that.\u201d <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the trouble with being <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deol in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/soni-razdan-yours-truly-middle-aged-actresses-alia-bhatt\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bollywood<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who is disinterested in fashioning a hyper-masculine image that is in line with the myth of his uncle and his two actor cousins, is that no one goes out of the way to see him in the more serious author-backed roles. He has to then, not only constantly work toward clearly defining the peculiar position he wants to occupy as an actor but also, to an extent, keeps creating roles for himself.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNo one imagined me in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dev.D<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Not even Anurag,\u201d he admits, even though it was Deol who came up with the idea for the film and approached <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/10-years-gulaal-politics-poetry-anurag-kashyap-cult-status\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kashyap<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to develop it. Naturally, the actor frequently brings up the very film that expanded the scope of mainstream filmmaking, in conversation. It eventually leads up to his nine-month long absence following its release. With the comfort of hindsight in hand, Deol terms that period, when he packed up and went abroad instead of reaping the accolades of the movie\u2019s unpredictable success, as \u201ccommercial suicide\u201d. Does he sometimes feel like his career hasn\u2019t profited off <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dev.D<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> enough? \u201cIt would have helped more if I was there to capitalise on the success. The narrative was in my control, I could have owned that film.\u201d <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps, that explains Deol\u2019s chosen route of re-emergence in the public consciousness: Instagram. Like Rahul Khanna, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/milind-soman-marriage-man-crush-monday\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Milind Soman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and R Madhavan, Deol has joined the ranks of actors exploiting social media currency to create a brand-new image. His Instagram, for instance, is unbelievably \u201cthirst-friendly\u201d, splattered with generous shirtless pictures and photogenic selfies. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The branding \u2013 a touch below being a sex symbol and slightly above being relegated to just a harmless crush \u2013 is evident even in the very forgettable<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Chopsticks<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The actor spends most of the film\u2019s proceedings in a white shirt, armed with his infectious smile, existing as a stylish reimagination of an attractive male lead. The aloof Abhay claims his accessibility on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/people\/instagram-snapchat-india-jaipur-social-media-celebrity\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instagram<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> isn\u2019t a case of selling out and aggressively projecting himself as a specific kind of artist. Instead, it\u2019s about making it work for him,\u201cI am still here. I survived, despite Bollywood,\u201d Deol says.
