{"id":4712,"date":"2016-03-14T05:46:00","date_gmt":"2016-03-14T00:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/?p=4712"},"modified":"2016-03-14T05:46:00","modified_gmt":"2016-03-14T00:16:00","slug":"20-years-of-biwi-no-1-david-dhawan-om-sai-ram","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/13.207.105.184\/?p=4712","title":{"rendered":"20 Years of Biwi No. 1: David Dhawan Ko Maaf Karna, Om Sai Ram"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\u00a0\n<p><span class=\"dropcap\">B<\/span>ack in 1999, Bollywood\u2019s three Khans were going through an unusual experimentation phase: Aamir Khan was trying to shed his chocolate boy image with the gritty cop drama, <\/p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/john-mathew-matthan-sarfarosh-kargil-war\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sarfarosh<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. SRK starred in Abbas-Mustan\u2019s campy <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baadshah<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And then there was Salman Khan, who instead just decided on doing the bare minimum: filling in Govinda\u2019s shoes in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Biwi No. 1<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the David Dhawan infidelity comedy where one of the actual dialogues is \u201cAish nahi, Sush\u201d.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The film revolves around Prem Mehra (Salman Khan), an ungrateful husband who, despite being married to the sanskaari Pooja (Karisma Kapoor) and fathering two kids, decides to leave his family for Rupali (Sushmita Sen), a model. After much tomfoolery and Pooja pulling out all the stops, the good wife eventually \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WiNs HeR MaN BaCk\u201d.<\/span><\/i>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Say what you will about \u201990s Bollywood, but they didn\u2019t hold back with tired tropes like star-struck models whose only goal in life is a husband with a \u201caalishaan bungalow and shaandaar gaadi\u201d. In fact, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Biwi No. 1<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dealt in two extremes: On the one hand, Prem\u2019s blatant misogyny is established with dialogues like, \u201cMain iss ladki ko apne ghar pe naukraani na rakhu,\u201d which he utters while looking at pictures of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/people\/bollywood-struggler-lokhandwala-extras-actors\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aspiring models<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And on the other, Pooja\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/love-and-sex\/cuddling-is-better-than-sex-fight-me\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sanskaar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is driven home by the fact that she sings bhajans every morning.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And yet I remember <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Biwi No. 1 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acquiring an integral place in my life that year. Not only was it one of the first movies I saw in a theatre with my parents, but my sister and I were also immediately taken with the soundtrack. For most of that year, we played the songs on our walkman and did regular renditions of \u201cChunnari Chunnari\u201d at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/music\/beta-gana-ga-ke-sunao-other-public-embarrassments-singing-indian-parents\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">family get-togethers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. My seven-year-old brain saw nothing wrong with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Biwi No. 1<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It was after all, like most David Dhawan outings at the time, the kind of film that families watched together. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two decades later, that seems baffling, considering <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Biwi No. 1<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is marred with sexist sub-plots like Anil Kapoor\u2019s Lakhan encouraging his best friend\u2019s adulterous ways by covering for him when his wife first gets wind of it. And Prem\u2019s mother coyly advising her bahu, \u201cTu uski <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/love-and-sex\/sesquipedalian-grammar-nazi-sapiosexual-sexting\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">premika<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> bann, biwi nahi\u201d (Be his lover, not his wife) as a justification for her son\u2019s shitty behaviour. If that isn\u2019t creepy enough, she goes on to give a sermon about \u201cmardo ki fitrat\u201d, implying that all men are overgrown hormonal teenagers who need someone on the side and bhartiya naaris should just deal with it.<\/span>\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\">There are multiple moments in Biwi No.1 that suggest that women like Pooja will be deified and the Rupalis of the world will be vilified.<\/blockquote>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s slightly disconcerting now to remember that my aunts and uncles who enjoyed <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Biwi No. 1<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the time, didn\u2019t think of questioning the very reductive messages the film conveyed. They unanimously laughed at Prem\u2019s double-timing ways \u2014 even the one reprehensible sequence that has Prem excuse himself from dinner with his wife to go have a quick tryst with his side-chick drew uproarious laughter. As did the scene where Prem almost slaps Pooja for implying that she should have also had a boy-toy. I get that it might be unfair to look at my family\u2019s decades-old reactions to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Biwi No. 1 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">through a 2019 lens, given that almost every film of that time was drenched in some degree of sexism. In fact, David Dhawan\u2019s filmography alone is marred with infidelity-themed comedies like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/govinda-aa-gaya-hero-bollywood-india-happy-ending-coolie-no-1\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">S<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aajan Chale Sasural<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Gharwali Baharwali, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Kyunki Main Jhooth Nahi Bolta<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, all of which glamourise the idea of male infidelity as comedy.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps, what is even more alarming, is that despite the progressive stance that Hindi cinema has adopted since then, remaking<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Biwi No. 1<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2019 isn\u2019t quite a far-fetched idea, especially given Varun Dhawan\u2019s fetish for rewriting history by starring in every remake of his father\u2019s film that is humanly possible. And if 2018\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Judwaa <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is anything to go by, the father-son duo have no qualms in recreating the same regressiveness that made their films so popular in the \u201990s. For example, they <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/feminisminindia.com\/2017\/11\/24\/judwaa-female-characters\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cut off the one strong female character<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the original film, and Varun Dhawan\u2019s Raja openly endorsed groping and smooching girls without their consent.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than anything, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Biwi No. 1<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> mined its comedy from the misadventures of pitting two women against each other: Pooja, the dainty housewife versus the bold other woman, Rupali. Even when <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pooja decides to extract revenge, it\u2019s not on her cheating husband, but instead on the other woman. That too, by sending her kids and mother-in-law to live with the other woman. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prem\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/politics\/rajasthan-elections-sharad-yadav-vasundhara-raje-body-shaming\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dickish behaviou<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">r is barely called out, but obviously, there are multiple moments in the film that suggest that women like Pooja will be deified and the Rupalis of the world will be vilified. And rewatching <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Biwi No. 1<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recently got me thinking: If that reboot were to happen today, would we have rooted for Prem the way our parents did back in the \u201990s? <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Probably, yes. After all, how much difference can 20 years bring about in a nation\u2019s collective mindset about women?<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/de-de-pyaar-de-luv-ranjan-ajay-devgn\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luv Ranjan films<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> still thrive on the same archaic portrayal of women as vamps and damsels, and are wildly successful<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But if I was given the choice, I\u2019d end the 2019 edition of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Biwi No 1<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the interval of the original \u2014 where Pooja kicks her cheating husband to the curb. Prem should drive himself straight into some much-needed therapy and Rupali can continue being the awesome, self-driven woman she was always meant to be. As for 2019 Pooja, she should just take the alimony and live the rest of her days having multiple fancy cars, diamond rings, and orgasms. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The End.
