But there is one actor who really understands the line between raw and ridiculous, and this week, he\u2019s going by a new name: Detective Pikachu. <\/span>\n\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pok\u00e9mon Detective Pikachu<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> released last Friday and has quickly become the most successful video game movie of all time. Set in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/games-of-thrones-dont-recognise\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fantastical<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> modern world where trainers have Pok\u00e9mon as partners, the noir-inspired mystery features a serviceable plot, live-action Pok\u00e9mon guaranteed to thrill your inner 12-year-old, and a masterstroke in casting in the form of Ryan Reynolds playing the amnesiac, coffee-chugging, New York wisecracking Detective Pikachu. His trainer, Harry Goodman, has gone missing, and Pikachu joins forces with his son Tim (Justice Smith) to find out what happened. Plot twist: Tim is the only one who can understand Pikachu.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In retrospect, the decision to have the Reynolds play Nintendo\u2019s most cuddly and beloved <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/day-chasing-pokemon-mumbai\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pok\u00e9mon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is perfection. To see Pikachu, usually confined to an anguished refrain of \u201cPika, pika!\u201d in a deerstalker, spouting conspiracy theories in Reynolds\u2019 sarcastic tones is a delightful shock to the system, and the electric yellow rodent would no doubt approve.<\/span>\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-49338\" src=\"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1557926733.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"267\" height=\"407\" \/>\n\nRyan Reynolds \/ Getty Images\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reynolds hasn\u2019t always clicked when he\u2019s tried to go the comic book route. He was panned for the dismal <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Green Lantern <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and his first Deadpool cameo in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">X-Men Origins<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but it looks like he was destined to be a superhero \u2014 the one we never knew we wanted, until we saw him and realised he\u2019s exactly who we need. Underneath the ironic wit that so endears him to feelings-averse millennials lies a core of sincerity that defines all heroes. Perhaps that\u2019s why his bizarro Pikachu remains the heart of the film, as it has been throughout the traditional Pok\u00e9mon narrative. <\/span>\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-49337\" src=\"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1557926733-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"271\" height=\"407\" \/>\n\nRyan Reynolds \/ Getty Images\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This ability to skewer a piece of content without disrespecting its essence is signature Reynolds \u2014 which is more than can be said for Hollywood. 2019 is flooded with questionable sequels, remakes, and homages (this year will bring back <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Godzilla<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aladdin<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Fast and Furious<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, among others), but as Rob Harvilla <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theringer.com\/movies\/2018\/5\/17\/17363750\/ryan-reynolds-deadpool-study\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">writes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Ringer<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Reynolds\u2019 whole career has been \u201ccrowd-pleasing meta nonsense\u201d. So relevant is Reynolds to today\u2019s pop culture landscape that it\u2019s hard to believe he\u2019s only been big since 2016, when he debuted as Marvel\u2019s foulmouthed, hideously disfigured superhero, Deadpool. Long considered an untouchable property due to its niche recognition and ghoulish, R-rated themes, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deadpool<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> spent 12 years in development hell. Reynolds was cast as the lead from the start. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deadpool<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/dont-we-all-miss-jim-carrey\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Canadian actor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was primarily known for being a handsome, likeable B-lister, the guy who wasn\u2019t Ryan Gosling. His bland appeal could be slotted anywhere, from an ill-conceived remake of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Amityville Horror <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/the-life-of-a-journalist-in-four-more-shots-please-and-other-chick-flicks-is-fake-news\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">romcoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Proposal<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Definitely, Maybe<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to supporting roles in poorer iterations of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blade<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Lampoon<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> franchises. Harvilla points out that \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by 2012, his celebrity had long outstripped his box-office viability\u2026 True <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/madhuri-papas-first-crush\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stardom<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> seemed out of reach, unless Dad Twitter stardom counts.\u201d <\/span>\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\">Reynolds allows you those degrees of separation from any kind of emotional truth, creating space to examine it through a filter of farce.<\/blockquote>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/deadpool-2-review-ryan-reynolds\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deadpool<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was the first movie that really, truly starred Ryan Reynolds. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When he went under the black-and-red mask, he wasn\u2019t just reinventing his own chocolate boy persona. He also honed the antidote to the glossy, heavy-duty superhero, seen in the contemporaneous <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Batman vs Superman<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Captain America: Civil War<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 parodying their invincibility, taking aim at stereotypes and plot holes, making meta-references that echo the viewer\u2019s thoughts <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Sample: \u201cYou&#8217;re probably thinking, \u2018Whose balls did I have to fondle to get my very own movie\u2019? I can&#8217;t tell you his name, but it rhymes with \u2018Polverine.\u2019&#8221;) <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Little wonder, then, that upon its eventual release, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deadpool<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shot from cult status to full-fledged cultural phenomenon, smashing box office records and impressing critics to boot. Like Iron Man and Robert Downey Jr, there is no Deadpool without Reynolds and his chronic inability to take himself seriously. The film\u2019s Valentine\u2019s Day release was promoted with kitschy rom-com posters, teasing at the title character\u2019s tragic origins story: About to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/how-i-broke-up-with-the-perfect-sabyasachi-wedding-saree\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">marry<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the love of his life, former special operative Wade Wilson is diagnosed with terminal cancer. He goes in for an experimental mutant therapy that cures him, but leaves him covered in unsightly scars.<\/span>\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-49336\" src=\"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1557926731.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"527\" height=\"407\" \/>\n\nRyan Reynolds \/ Getty Images\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wilson\u2019s subsequent revenge mission is the stuff of standard action movies, even if the fourth wall-breaking, self-aware treatment is not. His fear of returning to his fianc\u00e9e Vanessa, however, is a world away from slicing up bad guys while cracking off-colour jokes. No matter how much Deadpool\/Wilson\/Reynolds (let\u2019s face it, it\u2019s all one and the same at this point) pokes fun at the trope of a lost <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/love-and-sex\/why-i-choose-to-be-a-reluctant-monogamist-in-an-age-of-right-swipes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">romance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that drives the hero, there is a poignancy in the insecure lover who watches Vanessa from afar, unable to show her the monster he feels he\u2019s become. <\/span>\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-49335\" src=\"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1557926729.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"594\" height=\"396\" \/>\n\nRyan Reynolds \/ Getty Images\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not that Deadpool would ever hit you with such a cheesy line. Instead, he\u2019ll dance in the background of a deeply emotional Celine Dion <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CX11yw6YL1w\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">number<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, pirouetting on stilettos with unmatched grace. You can choose to laugh at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/deadpool-pansexual-superhero-queer-universe\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">incongruousness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of soaring vocals and Yanis Marshall\u2019s stirring choreography. Or you can get swept up in a performance that tries to proclaim its own absurdity, but ends up being a tour de force. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reynolds allows you those degrees of separation from any kind of emotional truth, creating space to examine it through a filter of farce. And yet, the reason he gets away with being such an asshole, existing in a perpetual state of poor taste that other actors wouldn\u2019t dare touch, is our assurance that he is actually the nicest guy. When he <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/tvshowbiz\/article-2942030\/Ryan-Reynolds-says-d-use-Blake-Lively-human-shield-protect-daughter.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">jokes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> he would use his wife Blake Lively as a human shield to protect his baby <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/modern-family\/mere-paas-maa-si-hai-do-we-thank-our-almost-mothers-enough\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">daughter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he means it, just as much as when he <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BTkliFqATKt\/?hl=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">waxes lyrical<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about her to Humans of New York.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spoiler alert: That\u2019s why the best part of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Detective Pikachu<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> comes at the very end, when Reynolds, playing Harry Goodman unwittingly trapped in his partner Pikachu\u2019s body, is finally liberated and face-to-face with his estranged son. A grey, careworn Harry and Tim stand, uncertain, on a precipice in their relationship. Harry instinctively holds back his <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/modern-family\/like-father-unlike-son-want-nothing-like-parents-millennials-boomers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paternal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> emotions and lets his son take the leap of faith. It\u2019s a sweet, happy ending, and for a guy who up until now has only been seen as a sardonic Pok\u00e9mon, it could have been a hard moment to sell.
