How Exactly Do You Say It?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span class=\"dropcap\">A<\/span>million-dollar question these days: Is it <\/p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/grub\/ramzan-eid-muslims-questions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ramzan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or Ramadan? As my luck would have it, I am here answering it without being paid the said million dollars. It is Ramadan.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I do not mind if you say Ramzan, but you must know that would be a mispronunciation. Exactly like pronouncing the Italian word <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/one-pepperoni-pizza-topping-politics-please\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pizza <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as \u201cpee-zaa\u201d rather than \u201cpeet-suh\u201d. Or my favourite example, the Mumbai central and harbour line train station many call \u201cSandaas (\u0938\u0902\u0921\u093e\u0938) Road Station\u201d. No special toilet stop, this. Rather, named after Lord Sandhurst, who was the Governor of Bombay between 1895 and 1900. Then there\u2019s restaurant, desi<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cres-toe-rent\u201d to the \u201ccorrect\u201d and \u201cFrench\u201d pronunciation <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cres-ter-uh\u2009nt, -tuh-rahnt, -trahnt\u201d.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ramadan may be called a loanword, a word adopted from one language (Arabic in this case) and incorporated into another language without translation. While at it, we spoke the word in the phonetic sounds of our local <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/indian-lingo-english-words\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">languages<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and emerged Ramzan.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The \u0636 in the Arabic alphabet is read as \u201cdwad\u201d and makes a \/\u1e0d\/ sound. While in Urdu, Persian, Sindhi, and Khowar, languages of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/indian-farmers-sued-potatoes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">subcontinent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that share the letter \u0636 in their alphabet, the letter is read as \u201czwad\u201d<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and takes the \/z\/ phoneme.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Almost like how my <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/culture\/why-the-insipid-you-can-never-match-the-intimacy-of-hindi-pronouns\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hindi<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> teacher switched \/z\/ with \/j\/ sounds when speaking in English. In fact, it\u2019s not a uniquely Indian problem: Canada\u2019s French speakers pronounce \u201cth\u201d in English as a \u201cd\u201d sound, and native speakers of Parisian French pronounce it with a \u201cz\u201d sound.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But then, when you have learned to pronounce English and French words as the English and the French do, by multitasking with phonetic sounds, why not with Arabic words?<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why should it be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BDUTT\/status\/1125314100848775168\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alien<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (re: Barkha Dutt tweet on May 6), or be perplexing (re: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/m.hindustantimes.com\/comment\/an-indian-question-why-ramzan-is-becoming-ramadan\/story-crAEErhv95BHQUnJkJ9PhL.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rezaul Hasan Laskar\u2019s article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in HT), or make us Arabs (re: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TarekFatah\/status\/868709956694028288\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tarak Fateh<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on May 5)?<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019d say this rather shows that the Indian Muslim is embracing life in the global community. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Could it be because the Indian <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/modern-family\/interfaith-marriage-religion-parents-christian-muslim\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muslim<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can ever be Indian enough? And shouldn\u2019t be too Muslim either. There\u2019s always an opinion on our Muslim-ness, conveniently confused with Arab-ness.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The men can wear the kurta-pajama, or even pants (a western import), but it\u2019s disturbing when the length of their trousers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/comment\/12191649\/Ankle-length-hems-for-well-dressed-Muslim-men.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stops short of the ankle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And oh my, if you spot one in a jhubba and a sa\u2019afa! What\u2019s with the Arabisation? Have him step out in a kilt, and you probably won\u2019t mind.<\/span>\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\">But then, when you have learned to pronounce English and French words as the English and the French do, by multitasking with phonetic sounds, why not with Arabic words?<\/blockquote>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/ban-burqa-ghunghat-women\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Burqa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is another eye-sore for \u201cright-winged\u201d and intellectuals waiting to liberate Muslim women from black polyster chains. Why is it black? Why should Indian women wear it in the first place? Maybe we love Goth. Or we find Arab fashion more adaptable than what\u2019s on the Paris runway. Plus, you can\u2019t see the stains. Their take is functional and fashionable.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And if it\u2019s not the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/ban-burqa-ghunghat-women\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">garment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that\u2019s won you over, at least concede that the word \u201cburqa\u201d is a certifiable SEO, and assures \u201ctrending\u201d status in India. Say burqa and you are on top of Twitter timelines, even if you mean the niqab. A search online will show you how most Indian media outlets use it to their advantage. Or why would Sri Lanka\u2019s decision to ban face veils in light of terror attacks be carried in the Indian media along with additions like \u201cburqa ban\u201d.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s the niqab that\u2019s being spoken about actually. The international media stuck to the term that corresponds \u201cface veil\u201d. But niqab is worn by a miniscule minority among the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/politics\/citizenship-bill-assam-protests-bjp-minorities\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">minority<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in India. So much less than the burqa. And it\u2019s the word burqa that makes for irresistible clickbait.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As is with a good bait, it\u2019s not to be wasted. The editorial in Shiv Sena\u2019s mouthpiece Saamana<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">also hollered for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/narendra-modi-chowkidar-protectors-democracy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prime Minister<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Narendra Modi to follow Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena\u2019s lead and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/ban-burqa-ghunghat-women\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ban the burqa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 of course, along with \u201cother face veils\u201d. Javed Akhtar, in good faith, jumped in, and proclaimed both burqa and ghoonghat<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">be banned as social evils. Nevermind a parallel to ghoonghat<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is niqab. One definitely foreign. Hint: You saw it on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lawrence of Arabia<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span>\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/ramzan-fasting-muslims-rituals-youth-food\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Islam<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> prescribes a dress code for both women and men. Not Saudi Arabia. To clear some concepts: A burqa is a garment that covers the body, say like a long coat. The niqab is a face veil. The hijab, colloquially, refers to the head scarf.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It IS religion, worn (by those who choose to) more so in fashion offered by a region that happens to create most of it. It doesn\u2019t come pre-fitted with any bombs. Promise.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indians can take inspiration from our colonisers, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/royal-baby-colonial-hangover\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">British<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but not our Arab neighbours. Especially Indian Muslims, who shouldn\u2019t look for inspiration anywhere outside India. America, Europe, or the Orient is okay, too. But Arab influences, oh no. Why? So the Arabs don\u2019t find us too cute?<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are the same fellows who are good friends with our PM, promising him billions of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/rupee-10-year-old-rejects-500-from-nri-aunty-demands-dollars\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dollars<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in investment, and are even building for us a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/news\/politics-and-nation\/talks-on-for-pm-modi-to-open-temple-in-uae-on-april-20\/articleshow\/68680149.cms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">temple<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the Emirates.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Surely, we can impress them by speaking their lingo a bit. Or phonetics of words they lent us.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Face a mirror and say <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/culture\/ramzan-muslim-religious-festival\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ramzan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Ramadan. You&#8217;ll look the same, not <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/weird\/ufo-day-aliens-earth-extra-terrestrials-nasa\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alien<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, not Arab. Also, try saying Sandaas Road and Sandhurst Road. If you look stupid saying the former, then you have your answer. So should all English newsrooms in India, if you want to follow the phonetic rules to their word-origins. Off to order a shawarma.
