{"id":4565,"date":"2016-07-10T00:06:41","date_gmt":"2016-07-09T18:36:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/?p=4565"},"modified":"2026-07-17T21:08:24","modified_gmt":"2026-07-17T15:38:24","slug":"meenakshi-seshadri-damini-feminism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/13.207.105.184\/?p=4565","title":{"rendered":"How the Meenakshi Seshadri-Starrer Damini Taught Me My First Lesson in Feminism"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"container page-content\"><p>\n\n<span class=\"dropcap\">I<\/span>\n\n<\/div>\nt\u2019s tough \u2014 I would call it impossible \u2014 for anyone who grew up in the \u201980s or \u201990s to hear the word \u201ctareekh\u201d and not break out, mentally at least, into the tareekh pe tareekh, tareekh pe tareekh monologue from the impactful movie <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Damini<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/campaign-trail-sunny-deol-gurdaspur-bjp\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sunny Deol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> might be famous for many things, but not as famous as his dhai kilo ka haath<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">now immortalised in Indian film history and most recently in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.news18.com\/news\/politics\/sunny-deol-files-nomination-from-gurdaspur-reminds-voters-of-his-dhai-kilo-ka-haath-2121665.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">politics<\/span><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And Amrish Puri\u2019s jerky flick of the head and smoothing of hair will forever be imprinted on many minds as one of the most irritatingly smug affectations that a morally bankrupt character has had in a Bollywood film. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s been 28 years to the day since Damini \u2013 lightning \u2013 struck us, but the memories of its most genius moments still occasionally echo in the minds of those of us who sat through multiple viewings of the film, most likely surrounded by family. Everyone watched in wide-eyed wonder as Damini (an indomitable Meenakshi Seshadri) beat impossible odds in her quest for justice for a rape <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/bilkis-bano-rape-survivors\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">survivor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That was the way of middle-class India in the \u201990s. One TV set that occupied pride of place in the house, with the remote control firmly controlled by the head of the family. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was a movie-struck six-year-old when <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Damini<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> released. Obviously, I wasn\u2019t taken to the theatre to watch such a grown-up film, but I do remember how much my <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/unfunny-person-comedy-standup-specials\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">grandfather<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> loved it. It was impossible to tear him away from the television every time it aired, and when the video library started stocking a VHS cassette, it found its way into our home at least a couple of times a month.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From about seven to 17, Babaji and I must have spent dozens of hours in silent camaraderie, wholly absorbed by the intensity of the Damini-Govind-Chaddha <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/technology-love-sex-relationships-procreation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trinity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I don\u2019t know what my grandfather\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/high-maintenance-woman-self-love-body\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fascination<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the movie was, but I know mine. In some ways, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Damini<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the origin story of a conviction that has defined my life and given it purpose \u2014 that women are not second-class citizens of the world, and that the struggle for equality is often exhausting, but the alternative is unacceptable.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I grew up at a time when <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/uday-chopra-self-awareness-bollywood\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bollywood<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> trafficked in tropes that leaned heavily on the characterisation of women as damsels in distress. If the heroine wasn\u2019t being treated like a piece of land that the owner (father) could sign away at will, agency gayi tel lene (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Love<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pardes<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">); she was being traded between brothers in a grand attempt at self-sacrifice (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yeh Dillagi<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saajan<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hum Aapke Hain Koun\u2026!<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), much like the Hulk Hogan card in a WWE deck.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Damini was different, but relatable. Her family\u2019s expectations of her were almost identical to mine and all the girls I knew, being raised as we were with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/politics\/indian-elections-mumbai-voting-working-class\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">middle-class <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">values: Do as you\u2019re told, don\u2019t argue with the elders, and always, always maintain the family\u2019s izzat in thought, speech, and action. <\/span>\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\">It was the first time I had seen a hero look at the heroine with awe, respect, and reverence onscreen. It was the first time I saw a man looking toward a woman for direction.<\/blockquote>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But Damini didn\u2019t do as she was told, argued incessantly with the elders, and struck fatal blows to the facade of family izzat if preserving it meant treating a woman like a sacrificial lamb. It was the first time I had seen a hero look at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/culture\/half-girlfriend-complete-moron-the-anatomy-of-a-chetan-bhagat-heroine\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heroine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with awe, respect, and reverence onscreen. It was the first time I saw a man looking toward a woman for direction. Even though I didn\u2019t know it then, watching that moment unfold was pivotal to my feminist education. It was the first page of an important lesson \u2013 men don\u2019t always lead, and even if they do, women don\u2019t always have to follow. And it was entirely possible to have a sense of purpose that went beyond being a dutiful daughter, wife, and mother. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meenakshi Seshadri\u2019s Damini is a woman <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/why-the-perfect-gift-doesnt-exist-for-the-married-indian-couple\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">married<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into a family many notches above hers on the totem pole of class. She is often ridiculed as a chote ghar ki ladki and her father\u2019s lower caste snarkily alluded to by a mother-in-law whose heart desires a rich bride. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the obvious and subtle put-downs, Damini\u2019s spirit burns bright, and when she is forced to toe the line and lie to protect her <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/juhu-minor-rape-residents-morcha-police-mumbai\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rapist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> brother-in-law she refuses. \u201cGood Indian girls\u201d of that time, or even of today, don\u2019t defy their elders like that. They don\u2019t put human dignity above family honour, especially when the person being violated is a lower caste, lower class \u201cnaukar\u201d. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By every yardstick, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Damini<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was a progressive movie, far ahead of its time. And its title character a feminist much before the word entered Bollywood\u2019s lexicon. It was heartening and unusual to see her find an ally as committed as Sunny Deol\u2019s Govind, given that even today women fighting any injustice are mostly met with disbelief, ridicule, and impossible standards of proof. The fact that Damini wasn\u2019t an upper-class, upper-caste girl, protected by the privilege of her station in life (her powerful in-laws quickly close ranks against her once she goes rogue, and throw her to the wolves with the contempt they have reserved for those they consider inferior) made the eventual victory just that much more satisfying. It taught me that women need to band together \u2014 it\u2019s our only shot against the many-tentacled monster that is the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/soni-review-ivan-ayr-delhi-police-harassment-india\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">patriarchy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span>\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-48584\" src=\"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1556620112.jpg\" alt=\"sunny_deol\" width=\"724\" height=\"407\" \/>\n\n<b>Red Chillies Entertainment<\/b>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I don\u2019t think I quite knew what rape even meant when I first watched <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Damini<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but that didn\u2019t stop my impressionable young mind from being horrified by whatever it was that was happening to the brutally gang-raped, defenceless maid (Urmi). It was my first brush with intersectionality within feminist theory, even though it would be years before I\u2019d finally learn the words to assign to the sickening feeling in my stomach every time I saw the film. Watching Urmi being treated like a dispensable pawn in a game of chess, hearing dialogues that stripped her of her humanity, and seeing the life being snuffed out of her with an almost callous disregard for the sanctity of human life just so caste and class could maintain their privilege is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/avengers-endgame-mcu-marvel\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gut-wrenching<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> even today. Women\u2019s lives mattered less than the men\u2019s, but some women\u2019s lives mattered even lesser than the others. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The dismal part is, 28 years after its release, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Damini<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> continues to be terrifyingly relevant even today. Being gang-raped and losing 14 family members wasn\u2019t enough, it took 17 long years filled with harassment, intimidation, and ceaseless attempts to erase her horror from public memory for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/bilkis-bano-rape-survivors\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bilkis Bano<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to finally get justice. The fact that she did is in itself a cause for celebration and wonder. Most victims, like the ones in the 1991 Kunan Poshpora mass-rape tragedy, either die waiting for justice or simply give up hope and withdraw from the process. Some, like the young woman who was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/delhi-crime-review-2012-delhi-gang-rape\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gang-raped<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Delhi in 2012, ironically nicknamed Damini before her true identity was made public, don\u2019t even get a chance to fight their fight. \u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the plot of a movie that is three decades old mirrors the reality of our times, what does that say about us as a society? And what does it say about the way we treat our women?
