Besides releasing his latest <\/p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/game-of-thrones-jaime-lannister-forgiveness-letting-go\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bestselling novel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Girl in Room 105<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, last year, Bhagat also got clocked with a dubious #MeToo allegation by writer Ira Trivedi, who accused him of forcing a kiss on her. Bhagat responded by posting their email exchanges on Twitter, showing that Trivedi had used the inarguably weird sign-off \u201cmiss u kiss u\u201d. She insisted that this was merely a \u201cpop culture salutation\u201d, and Bhagat publicly apologised to his wife for his inappropriate conduct. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There, it would seem, the matter rests. Following this brief he-said she-said, all we\u2019ve really learned is not to assume that professional writers know anything about grammar. And yet, it shines a much-needed light on to the mysterious mind of IIT graduate and self-styled <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/politics\/travelled-7500-kilometres-vote\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">youth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> whisperer, Chetan Bhagat. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not just real-life women with whom Bhagat seems to share a tetchy relationship. Frequently criticised as a purveyor of poor writing, he sticks to his tried-and-tested formula of \u201cboy meets girl, life gets in the way, boy gets girl\u201d. There\u2019s not a lot of fussing around with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/fleabag-review-phoebe-waller-bridge-andrew-scott-female-coping\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">plotlines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and character development, and his dialogue too often reads like a forward from a WhatsApp uncle (Sample: \u201cWhy should any guy want to be only friends with a girl? It\u2019s like agreeing to be near a chocolate cake and never eat it.\u201d)<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, Bhagat focuses on themes that, he insists, will resonate with the youth of India. Just look at the super-relatable hero of 2014\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/half-girlfriend-chetan-bhagat-shraddha-kapoor-arjun-kapoor-honest-trailers-trailer-review\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Half Girlfriend<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a novel that is literally described on Bhagat\u2019s own website as \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a simple and inspiring love story of a boy called Madhav who doesn\u2019t speak English well\u201d. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019d be excused for thinking that through <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Half Girlfriend<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Bhagat was simply trying to teach middle-class India about the wonders of masturbation. But there is, in fact, a \u201chalf girlfriend\u201d in the story, a half-character who speaks English and is called Riya. Like most of Bhagat\u2019s heroines, Riya is the unattainable college girl. You\u2019ll find her in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Five Point Someone <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as Neha, a professor\u2019s daughter who has attractive toes. Or in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2 States<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as Ananya, the Tamil classmate whose conservative <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/earth\/indian-mom-middle-class-sustainable-living\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">parents<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are an obstacle for the Punjabi protagonist. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And this is the perpetual anatomy of the Chetan Bhagat heroine. She is always far too good for the men in the story, and luckily redeems herself by doing stupid things at random, without a shred of motivation (like Riya pretending to die of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/modern-family\/my-didi-my-keeper-did-my-illness-steal-my-sisters-childhood\/?fbclid=IwAR1TwxLIWWxGNfHRXOsMRNtRWU5aCQooo4P9Ktds1Qd93o01uvrVTAkBfZc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Despite being very beautiful and intelligent, natch, she is seemingly a moron when it comes to matters of the heart \u2014 which is why she inevitably ends up with one of Bhagat\u2019s douchebag protagonists. You know she\u2019s highly educated because she has met the hero in college, but beyond her briefest biodata, there\u2019s not much more to say about Bhagat\u2019s version of a dreamgirl.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps you can\u2019t fault Bhagat for sticking to what he knows, even if you\u2019d hope that as a 44-year-old father of two, that goes beyond a college campus. When he deviates from his formula, things go horribly wrong, as in his 2015 novel, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One Indian Girl<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Here, Bhagat tries to adopt a female, and yes, feminist perspective, and gifts us a protagonist who says things like, \u201cno Punjabi male will like me, I don\u2019t have breasts the size of footballs like other Punjabi women.\u201d Radhika is a super-successful, jetsetting investment banker who is, for some reason, obsessed with getting married to her shitty boyfriend, has an affair with her boss, and goes in for an arranged marriage \u2014 all in a day\u2019s work for Bhagat\u2019s \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/hazaaron-khwaishein-aisi-political-film\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">modern Indian<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> woman\u201d. Radhika finally decides that she doesn\u2019t need to get married, which allows Bhagat to classify this mess as feminist literature. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, many argue that for the average small-town Indian, the idea of a career woman choosing not to get married is groundbreaking stuff. And while Bhagat\u2019s work may not cut any ice with the literati, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Five Point Someone<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, about the pressures of Indian colleges, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2 States<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a semi-autobiography about his own inter-community marriage, have an undeniably relevant point of view. But this mass appeal with young people is precisely why Bhagat\u2019s one-dimensional view of women is so harmful.<\/span>\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\">Just look at the super-relatable hero of 2014\u2019s Half Girlfriend, a novel that is literally described on Bhagat\u2019s own website as \u201ca simple and inspiring love story of a boy called Madhav who doesn\u2019t speak English well\u201d.<\/blockquote>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sure, something like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Half Girlfriend<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 complete with a godawful film adaptation starring <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/haseena-parkar-movie-review-shraddha-kapoor-siddhanth-kapoor-apoorva-lakhia-dawood-ibrahim-bollywood\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shraddha Kapoor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Arjun Kapoor \u2013 is low-hanging fruit and a prime example of his bafflingly sexist ideas. This is a story where Madhav believes Riya, rather than being turned off by his desperate and unwelcome attentions, is too proud to date a guy who isn\u2019t high-class like her. Obviously unwilling to give this abusive ass a straight-up no, she agrees to be his \u201chalf-girlfriend\u201d. In the Q&#038;A section on his website, Bhagat describes this condition thusly: \u00a0\u201cA boy may think he is more than friends with the girl, but the girl is still not his girlfriend. Hence, I thought we needed a term like \u2018half-girlfriend&#8217;. Because in India, that is what most men get.\u201d<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At this point, the omission of Riya from the novel\u2019s one-liner starts making a lot more sense (even though Bhagat would likely argue that her inclusion in the title makes him a feminist). <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Half Girlfriend <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is not really about Riya at all, and in Bhagat\u2019s world, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/love-and-sex\/kya-dosti-pyaar-hai-why-i-love-to-hate-my-girlfriends-male-bff\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">having a girlfriend<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is not predicated on the opinion of the girl in question. In <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2 States<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he casually compares attractive women with the aforementioned chocolate cake, racing cars, and biscuits. And even if Radhika of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One Indian Girl<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ends up choosing herself over a relationship, Bhagat has still been accused of plagiarising her from a woman writer, Anvita Bajpai.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clearly, there\u2019s a reason Bhagat, a guy who slipped out of a cheating scandal by calling his wife the Parvati to his Shiva, is still considered a youth icon on his 45th birthday. Is this a sign that the chief values of future generations will be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/pewdiepie-vs-t-series-no-matter-who-wins-this-scrappy-internet-brawl-we-lose\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opportunism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and thinly veiled misogyny? <\/span>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s not just real-life women with whom Chetan Bhagat seems to share a tetchy relationship.
