{"id":4537,"date":"2016-04-30T17:39:05","date_gmt":"2016-04-30T12:09:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/?p=4537"},"modified":"2016-04-30T17:39:05","modified_gmt":"2016-04-30T12:09:05","slug":"game-of-thrones-jaime-lannister-forgiveness-letting-go","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/13.207.105.184\/?p=4537","title":{"rendered":"Game of Thrones: Are We Ready to Let Go of Jaime Lannister?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"container page-content\"><p><span class=\"dropcap\">N<\/span><\/p><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ext week, HBO will broadcast \u201cThe Battle of Winterfell\u201d, the third episode of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/game-of-thrones-season-8-winterfell\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Game of Thrones<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 final season<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is sure to kick off an avalanche of weepy farewells as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GoT <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">does what it does best \u2013 kill off the characters we\u2019ve fallen in love with over the last decade. This week\u2019s episode, \u201cA Knight of the Seven Kingdoms\u201d, is then a final goodbye to several of the show\u2019s central cast, as most of the story\u2019s important figures gather in Winterfell to fight the oncoming horde of undead. And of all these hinted-at partings, the one that surprisingly promises to be the most heart-wrenching is that of who was once the most despicable man in the Seven Kingdoms \u2013 Jaime Lannister.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Much of the episode deals with Jaime\u2019s arrival in Winterfell, among a host of people who consider him a sworn enemy. There\u2019s his younger brother Tyrion, whom Jaime swore to kill when they next met; there\u2019s Danaerys Targaryen, whose father he betrayed and stabbed in the back; and there\u2019s Bran Stark, the boy he crippled for life, robbing him of his inheritance. But despite coming close to being executed, Jaime survives \u2013 not because every man is needed for the coming battle, but because his enemies <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/sabrina-lal-death-penalty-kathua-unnao-manu-sharma\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">forgive<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> him for his transgressions, bringing his story full circle.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jaime\u2019s redemption begins when he is crippled by mercenaries, and the loss of his sword hand leads to a loss of self-identity. In reflecting on who he truly is, and with no small help from the human moral compass Brienne of Tarth, Jaime comes to terms with the fact that the person he used to be was a terrible individual. It takes some more prodding, like his sister <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/game-of-thrones-cersei-jaime-olenna-euron-greyjoy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Queen Cersei<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> going on a homicidal spree, but losing the hand with which he committed his greatest sins is effectively when Jaime begins questioning his own actions.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your own mistakes are always the hardest to forgive. While not all of us have treason, rape, and murder on our conscience like Jaime Lannister, who among us hasn\u2019t done something they\u2019re not too proud of? Whether it\u2019s letting down a loved one, failing to kick an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/series\/invisibles\/hero-heroin-addict\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">addiction<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or just realising it\u2019s harder to break out of your negative patterns than you thought, being disappointed in yourself is an essentially human experience.<\/span>\n\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\"><p>This is Game of Thrones, and all men must die, but Jaime\u2019s death is going to sting a little harder because of how far he\u2019s come.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Part of the reason <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thrones<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> became such a runaway mainstream success is because it rose above standard fantasy tropes of good and evil, and tapped into the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/stark-knight-rises\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shades of grey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that define what it means to be human. And when it comes to shades of grey, they don\u2019t come in more hues than Jaime Lannister. When Jaime actually confronts his past, owns up to his mistakes, and decides to make amends, he transforms from a typical cocky villain into a richly layered character, one who became a better person after forgiving himself.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the show began, nobody could have predicted that the person to best embody why second chances matter would be Jaime Lannister. He began the show as an unrepentant narcissist, and now, in what is likely to be one of his final appearances, he selflessly passes the torch of knighthood to Brienne, as a final act of reparations. If Jaime is to fall in the next episode\u2019s battle, as the show is heavily hinting at, he will be the most sociopathic, twisted, and occasionally inhuman character for whose death I\u2019ll shed a tear.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By proving even a roguish, murderous opportunist can find his honour, Jaime offers every viewer hope for redemption, and a fresh start. Right from the Grimm fairy-tales about the Big Bad Wolf in Grandma\u2019s cloak up to the doting boyfriend-cum-killer stalker Joe in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/netflix-you-stalkers-millennials\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Netflix\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there have been plenty of stories about how those with a seemingly sweet exterior contain a lurking evil. In contrast, Jaime Lannister provides a refreshingly hopeful perspective, where a hard, callous, malevolent exterior hides the soul of a good, righteous person.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Game of Thrones<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and all men must die, but Jaime\u2019s death is going to sting a little harder because of how far he\u2019s come.
