In my house, as soon as the clock struck eight, the Royal Rumble would commence. \u201cDoraemon!\u201d my sister would bark while elbowing my <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/first-person\/buck-teeth-self-love-women-bodies-appearance\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">face<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cZack &#038; Cody!\u201d I\u2019d assert, pulling the remote towards me. And before anyone could change the channel, the resounding sound of Amitabh Bachchan\u2019s deep baritone asking questions to yet another <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kaun Banega Crorepati <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contestant would echo through the room. With the final word resting with mom and dad, we\u2019d watch TV every night from 8-10 pm. And that, my young, binge-watching friends, was referred to as \u201cFamily TV Time\u201d. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, you should know that I\u2019ve never enjoyed watching <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kaun Banega Crorepati<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. After all, who would like a show that reminds you of just how little you\u2019ve been paying attention at school? But I kept watching because that was the only time I\u2019d get to spend with my family.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> With most of our waking hours spent daydreaming in class and tuition, my sister and I would have very little time left to unwind. As for my parents, my father would spend most of his day behind a laptop screen and my mother would be teaching at school, followed by preparing dinner for us shortly after returning home. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, those two hours were all we had left at the end of a tiring weekday. Slumped on the couch, with our legs stretched out, and the TV glaring at us, we\u2019d tune in, tune out, and finally spend some time together. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Between spoonfuls of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/grub\/rajma-chawal-comfort-food-world-recipe\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chawal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and squabbling over the channel, we\u2019d bond by making hapless attempts at answering Bachchan\u2019s questions, laughing at each other\u2019s awful guesses, and asking about each other\u2019s day at school and office during commercials. Sure, we never got any of the answers right, but as Bruce Springsteen once rightfully said, \u201cIt\u2019s the little things that count.\u201d It continues to be one of my fondest memories from childhood. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But over the years, we stopped doing that. In fact, I can\u2019t seem to remember the last time we turned on the flatscreen in our living room. Just last month, my father \u2013 whom I\u2019ve never seen so exuberant on a weeknight \u2013 rushed out of his bedroom screaming \u201cDone! I\u2019ve finished the first season of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/series\/arrepodcast-sunte-ho\/does-india-have-a-wedding-problem\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Made in Heaven<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">! Beat that!\u201d And faster than one could say \u201cSobhita Dhulipala\u201d, my mother retorted with \u201cToo late! Finished it last night while you were asleep.\u201d <\/span>\n\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\"><p>Indians\u2019 love for binge-watching has turned us into the second-highest public binge-watchers in the world.<\/p><\/blockquote> \n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That night, I figured out why I can\u2019t seem to watch a single episode of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brooklyn 99 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on Netflix without it buffering for an eternity \u2013 my parents had not only stopped watching TV altogether, but had in fact turned to binge-watching TV shows on OTT platforms.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/baxiabhishek\/2018\/03\/27\/streaming-services-are-vying-for-dominance-in-india-as-cord-cutting-finally-takes-off\/#5eacdbaf4baf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forbes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> article titled \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Streaming Services are Vying for Dominance in India as Cord Cutting Finally Takes Off<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d, the author suggests that 2016 was in fact the year we stopped watching TV and found the perfect excuse to buy a second phone. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two biggest streaming services \u2013 Netflix and Amazon Prime Video \u2013 launched in India, and there was also increased mobile data consumption in the country, triggered by promotional offers by the new carrier on the block, Jio, and a closing of the gap by existing carriers.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d \u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the switch to streaming platforms doesn\u2019t merely comprise of Netflix and Amazon Prime. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/Consumer\/PyTKS6GVjiZTmYY9C46hzK\/Hotstar-top-video-streaming-app-in-India-report.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Livemint<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> article provides a ranking of India\u2019s top 10 streaming apps<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by app analytics firm App Annie Inc, showing that Hotstar stands first followed by JioTV, JioCinema, Voot TV, and Amazon Prime, while Netflix stands at the ninth position. \u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So is it just my parents who\u2019ve <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/juhu-minor-rape-residents-morcha-police-mumbai\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">abandoned<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> their TV sets? <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The answer it turns out, is a resounding \u201cNo\u201d. Indians\u2019 love for binge-watching has turned us into the second-highest public binge-watchers in the world. An <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiatoday.in\/technology\/news\/story\/india-has-the-second-highest-public-binge-watchers-in-the-world-says-netflix-1086315-2017-11-14\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India Today<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> article cites a survey conducted by <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/netflix\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Netflix<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which explains that 88 per cent Indians have been watching on the go. And that\u2019s 71 per cent more than last year. \u201cAlmost 65 per cent of us are binge-watching on trains, 58 per cent on buses and 52 per cent on a flight, according to Netflix,\u201d says the author. \u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, now you know why <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/series\/first-person\/air-hostess-diary-flight-airline-indians-firang\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">passengers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> get so restless when asked to turn off their electronic devices on airplanes. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for families that used to watch TV together, in a Guardian <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/lifeandstyle\/2017\/aug\/12\/watching-tv-is-the-only-wholesome-family-time-we-have-most-days\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">essay<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> titled \u201cWatching TV is the only wholesome family time we have most days,\u201d the author rightfully says that, \u201cThanks to the much-vaunted <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/tv-and-radio\/tvandradioblog\/2013\/may\/23\/second-golden-age-television-soderbergh\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">golden age of television<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and enabled, not hindered, by on-demand and streaming, we manage to reach a sort of consensus, finding shows we all enjoy, or can at least watch without <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/satire\/no-bras-please-were-indian-bar-bar-dekho-censor-board-bra\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mutiny<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There was a time when families watching TV together was an essential bonding exercise. In the 1970s, there was even a federally enforced \u201cFamily Viewing Hour\u201d in the USA, which decreed that all broadcasters must air \u201cfamily-friendly content\u201d during the first hour of prime-time, 8-9 pm. Today, at a time when hectic work schedules seem to be endless, and our patience exhausted, perhaps two hours with our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/modern-family\/elder-sister-parenting-your-sibling\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">families<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is just what we need to de-stress and dare I say, lighten the mood. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This only brings me to the conclusion that, maybe the answer isn\u2019t to turn <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/politics\/election-2019-social-media-political-party-manifesto-congress-bjp\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">back<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to cable TV but to find something to binge-watch with your family.
