The length of your hair is a measure of your worth, your attractiveness, your <\/p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/satire\/condom-ad-ban-children-india-sanskar-indecent\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sanskar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And no excuses \u2013 genes, medical issues, or even agency \u2013 are acceptable. For an Indian woman, there are few decisions as couched in shame and worry as shaving your head. Female baldness, unlike male baldness, doesn\u2019t invite sympathy \u2013 it\u2019s a marker of inadequacy.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s this narrative that debutante director Qassim Kallow attempts to dissect in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gone Kesh<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The film\u2019s lead Enakshi Dasgupta (Shweta Tripathi) suffers from alopecia, an incurable medical condition because of which her hair continuously falls out in round patches, gradually rendering her <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/bald-woman-india-haircut-relationships\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bald<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As a voiceover informs us that Enakshi discovers the consequences of living with this condition when she\u2019s 15, swiftly becoming the subject of jokes at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/introverts-extroverts-school-classroom\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">school<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. By the time she\u2019s 25, she is completely bald, leading her and her helpless small-town parents, Anup (Vipin Sharma) and Deboshree (Deepika Amin) to take refuge in wigs. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As is the case with measuring the gravity of every obstacle that women face by how it affects their marriageability, even Enakshi\u2019s parents are terrified by the prospect of their daughter being exiled from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/arranged-marriage-indian-brides-grooms-parents-culture\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">marriage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> market. Staying true to script, an arranged marriage meeting with a set of prospective in-laws is unsubtly called off the minute Enakshi takes off her wig to reveal her plate. It isn\u2019t the only predictable turn that the film takes, ending up presenting a rather straightforward interpretation of Enakshi\u2019s diminishing self-worth that barely scratches the surface. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the course of two hours, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gone Kesh\u2019s<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> underdog journey feels like it was lifted from a boilerplate and then force-fitted to a condition. Even its distinct touches \u2013 supportive <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/modern-family\/parents-arranged-marriage-love\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">parents<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a well-mannered admirer \u2013 feel designed to only confirm our perception of how our society will always balk at the idea of a bald woman. <\/span>\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\">Over the course of two hours, Gone Kesh\u2019s underdog journey feels like it was lifted from a boilerplate and then force-fitted to a condition.<\/blockquote>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a compelling thread in the film that touches upon hair clinics, their unrealistic promises, and the incessant amount of money that countless women and families spend to live up to a certain standard of beauty. But even that is addressed briefly, without the movie taking a stance. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even the admiration that the movie merits for taking up a less discussed subject and acknowledging the pressure that women face if they don\u2019t meet the beauty stereotypes feels dishonest because Tripathi does not shave her head for her character but instead uses <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/people\/airport-security-prosthetic-leg-disability\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prosthetics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s a kind of Bollywood-bred double standard, not very different than bronzing a fair actor\u2019s face to have them essay the emotional turmoil of a dark-skinned person.<\/span>\n\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gone Kesh<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> follows in the footsteps of socially relevant films like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hichki<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> My Name is Khan<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that exploit a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/animals\/dogorrhea-disease-doggy-moms\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medical condition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to drive home an underdog tearjerker, a trend undoubtedly intensified by the universal appeal of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taare Zameen Par<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Yet very few movies manage to do justice to the condition itself, instead of relying on it as an easy plot device \u2013 a balance <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shubh Mangal Savdhan <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seemed to effectively manage.
