{"id":4284,"date":"2016-04-17T22:02:47","date_gmt":"2016-04-17T16:32:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/?p=4284"},"modified":"2016-04-17T22:02:47","modified_gmt":"2016-04-17T16:32:47","slug":"environment-climate-change-indian-parents","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/13.207.105.184\/?p=4284","title":{"rendered":"\u201cBadi Aayi Environment-Waali!\u201d Why Our Parents Don\u2019t Give a Damn About Climate Change"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"container page-content\"><p><span class=\"dropcap\">W<\/span><\/p><\/div><p>hen I was younger, my parents would always tell me to turn off the lights before I exited a room, or else I\u2019d get one flying chappal<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Because <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/people\/how-to-live-on-3-hours-a-day-elephanta-independence-day\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">electricity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> bill and all. Now the tables have turned, and when my parents come over to my house, I have to run after them to switch off the lights. Now that we\u2019ve risen a step on the social ladder, who cares about the power bill? And what about conserving electricity? Well that was never a part of our rulebook. \u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m glad my parents think I make enough to foot a bill for 24X7 electricity usage, but what bothers me today is that the reason they ever cared about switching off the lights had nothing to do with being green \u2013 it was the other kind of green that they wanted to save. This lack of concern for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/earth\/world-environment-day-meet-mumbais-zero-waste-uncle\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">environment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is something that is intrinsic to everyone from my mum and dad\u2019s generation, which leaves me a little flummoxed because I learnt the basics of recycling from them. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My aunts and uncles, my friends\u2019 folks also don\u2019t seem to give a fuck. At the risk of sounding like my mother, I must say that this is a generation-wide problem. (Obviously, I don\u2019t mean to generalise, and if your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/modern-family\/indian-families-adulting\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">family<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> puts in the effort to reduce their waste that cannot decompose, kudos to them.) I am surrounded by an entire gang of educated, well-informed men and women mostly born in the \u201960s and early \u201970s who refuse to go the extra mile. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My parents live in a residency where people stay in bungalows, and most of our neighbours are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/millennials-early-retirement-age\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">retired<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. I\u2019ve seen women sit in the park, eat samosas and throw the waste right there. The garbage bin, just five steps away, is half-empty, while the park is littered with wrappers and plastic bottles. My aunt refuses to turn off the taps even as buckets after buckets of water overflow while she is busy chatting on her phone. There\u2019s a dejunking session in my house every couple of months and it usually ends in a pile of plastic being pulled out from every corner of the house and then disposed of, right in the bin. No recycling, or reusage, just chucked away, eventually to be swallowed by some sea turtle. <\/span>\n\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\"><p>We seem to be telling the older generation to give global warming some thought. Maybe because we are here to stay and so are our children.<\/p><\/blockquote> \n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Somehow my generation, us infamous millennials, has not inherited this indifference. Despite everything we have \u201ckilled\u201d, we still seem to be a little more environment-conscious, in our small, if ineffectual, ways. We try to save power, we are concerned about running taps, and we march to Save Aarey and the Aravali Biodiversity Park. \u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m not exactly sure how we got here. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/ssc-students-school-hierarchy-system\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">School<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> books rarely taught us about doing the small things that aid conservation or prevent climate change, but we\u2019ve grown up on a heavy dose of end-of-the-world movies like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Day After Tomorrow <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2012<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Remember the latter\u2019s opening scene, where it is snowing in Delhi? This February we saw the NCR being lashed with a hailstorm, the intensity of which has been hitherto unseen: It prompted scientists to say that it fit into the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/news\/india\/delhi-hailstorm-may-be-a-warning-sign-of-climate-change-1549921322894.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pattern of climate change<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and was only the beginning of more such extreme weather. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m no scientist, but it is evident to even me that climate change is happening faster than you can spell \u201capocalypse\u201d \u2013 rising sea levels along the Mumbai coast, the deadly heatwave in Kolkata, the floods in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/sabarimala-literacy-kerala-women\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kerala<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Environmentalists are losing their shit, people are trying to cut back on their use of plastic straws, Leonardo DiCaprio\u2019s Instagram feed is filled with the saddest (but true) stories. And amid all this, my parents just continue to set their ACs at 16 degrees, unaffected by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/polar-bear-photo-starving-climate-change-nat-geo-cristina-g-mittermeier-a8479946.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart-wrenching video<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the starving Polar Bear in the Canadian Baffin Islands.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019d be lying if I said my parents are not aware. They can likely talk your ears off at the dinner table with conversation about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/series\/first-person\/balakot-air-strike-pulwama-jaish\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">airstrikes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, war, and the rival nation, but there seems to be no action as far as climate change is concerned. They scoff when I try to tell them about decreasing the use of plastic, or wearing organic cotton clothes, or even recycling. \u201cOh please, we have bigger problems to worry about. And so do you,\u201d is a standard response. As if the end of the world is not a big enough problem. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is a reason for this indifference? I saw a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/_FpihogHAQM\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">video<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the other day, where older people were talking about why they couldn\u2019t care two hoots about the world ending. And I quote, \u201cI\u2019ll be dead by then.\u201d We millennials might have killed love and relationships, conversations, handshakes, heck even breakfast cereal. But we are not responsible for killing the planet. That, good people of the \u201970s, that is on you. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I don\u2019t remember any grandmother telling her grandchild to not use plastic or a father encouraging his son to use public transport because it will help reduce carbon emissions. For the most part, it seems to be the other way around. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> seem to be telling the older generation to give global warming some thought. Maybe because we are here to stay and so are our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/children-racist-skin-colour\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">children<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development-professionals-network\/2017\/jun\/13\/dont-ignore-young-people-were-key-to-fighting-climate-change\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">column in the Guardian<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> titled \u201cDon\u2019t Ignore Young People \u2013 We\u2019re Key to Fighting Climate Change\u201d says, \u201cWhile the world leaders signing accords in conference halls are important, the real change is going to come from us. Call us millennials or Gen Z or Net Gen, we\u2019re the consumers, employees, employers and future leaders who will see the devastating effects of climate change. We are also the most connected generation in history, with the capacity to arrange coordinated global protests like the Women\u2019s March in a matter of days, to create a $2.5m Love Army for the Somali drought in a few weeks.\u201d <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But we definitely cannot do it alone. There is enough research out there to tell us that we have only <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2018\/10\/07\/world\/climate-change-new-ipcc-report-wxc\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">until 2030<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to curb climate change. Time is running out and if each and every person in the world does not act now to reverse the change, we are doomed. This includes our parents, grandparents, and our families.
