Capital, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">where Purl,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a bright pink excited ball of yarn is about to begin her first day. Within seconds, Purl<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">realises that this is going to be a difficult place to work in. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/why-our-parents-dont-get-our-work-culture\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">office<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is full of men who look and dress the same. They show affection to each other in the form of fist bumps and high fives; laugh at sick jokes by the water cooler; and talk about gym and sports, among other Manly Man\u2122 things. As Purl<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is being escorted to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">her<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cubicle, she is met, not with warm handshakes, but with confused stares and hushed whispers.<\/span>\n\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Purl <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has a hard time fitting in, despite being the most qualified for the job. Her <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/intern-office-workplace-rules-no-one-tells-you\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">colleagues<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> don\u2019t understand her jokes, think that her solutions for the failed Brojections<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are \u201ctoo soft\u201d, and keep her out of their drinking plans. Completely isolated, she finds a way to weave her way into the boys\u2019 club. She knits herself a new personality and becomes more like her male colleagues \u2013 cracking vulgar jokes, using expletives as a sign of aggression, being obnoxious and loud during meetings. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Growing up, I\u2019ve known many such Purls<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">women who\u2019ve had to work twice as hard as the men to be recognised for their efforts; woman who\u2019ve had to take on a steely, aggressive persona to be taken seriously by their colleagues. One such Purl is my aunt. Having worked for a company for nearly 20 years, I\u2019ve often heard her complain how she still gets talked over at meetings by her male colleagues. She still misses out on important updates regarding projects that are shared by her <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/toxic-women-bosses-office-mental-abuse\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">boss<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during impromptu \u201cnon-work related gatherings\u201d from which she is left out.<\/span>\n\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Purl <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a story that most <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/indias-successful-women-shy-away-from-the-feminist-tag\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">working women<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> today know all too well. When not worrying about how to avoid the creepy boss who is always too keen to give a hug or pat the back, they have to devise ways in which they can be included in the discussions among their male colleagues.<\/span>\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\">The casual sexism that usually goes unnoticed contributes in alienating women and depriving them of opportunities.<\/blockquote>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The prevalence of bro culture at the workplace is merely one of the many ways in which <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/bro-code-toxic-masculinity-woke-men\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">toxic masculinity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> manifests itself. It functions as an exclusionary tool that relegates women to the margins. Several modern workplace offer a microcosmic representation of how patriarchy and toxic masculinity operate in the larger context. As long as your bro<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has your back, you need not worry about women or funny-looking balls of yarn taking over your jobs. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like everything else on the internet, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Purl <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is being ridiculed by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/woke-bro-inc-feminism-new-age-media\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anti-feminists<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for spreading \u201canti-men propaganda\u201d and for \u201ccreating issues even when there aren\u2019t any\u201d. This just goes on to show how important and well-timed <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Purl<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is. <\/span>\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-46101\" src=\"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1550580487.jpg\" alt=\"purl_pixar\" width=\"678\" height=\"407\" \/>\n\n<figcaption>\n<p>Pixar Animation Studios<\/p>\n\n<\/figcaption>\n\n<\/figure>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s an attempt to look inward by Pixar which has a reputation for being \u201cHollywood\u2019s boys club\u201d<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It wasn\u2019t until the unravelling of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/whatsapp-sexual-harassment-at-the-workplace-india-vishakha-guidelines-cyber-crime\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sexual harassment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> allegations against its now ousted COO John Lasseter, that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pixar\u2019s <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">notoriety came to the forefront. In fact, the company has historically been known to have a toxic work environment, with a lack of women animators and stories with women protagonists.<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Purl\u2019s<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> director Kristen Lester has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/7nK6mSsO6M8\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">admitted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> how the film is inspired by her own experiences as an animator. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the film, Purl<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has to alter her entire physical structure in order to be taken seriously at work. She has to mould her personality to become more like her colleagues to be acceptable \u2013 something a lot of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/metoo-women-refuse-to-believe-other-women\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">successful women<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> do.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barbara Annis the founder of the Gender Intelligence Group, a consultancy that strategises to transform their work cultures into ones that are friendly to both men and women, recalls how she emulated \u201cvery male behaviour\u201d when she was the only woman salesperson in Sony in the \u201980s. \u201cInside the company, I became one of the guys,\u201d she <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/business\/archive\/2015\/07\/women-work-gender-equality-workplace\/399503\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tells<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The Atlantic.<\/span>\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\">The prevalence of bro culture at the workplace is merely one of the many ways in which toxic masculinity manifests itself.<\/blockquote>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The image of a successful woman that we are most familiar with is of one who thinks like a man, talks like a man, and sometimes even dresses like a man. Even someone as powerful as Angela Merkel began openly addressing issues related to feminism and female representation in politics very recently, after eyeing an impending exit from her political life, as this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/01\/30\/opinion\/angela-merkel-feminism.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York Times article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> points out.<\/span>\n\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Purl<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> doesn\u2019t have very clear answers about creating an inclusive <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/life-lessons-from-the-workplace-watercooler\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">workplace<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> environment for women, but it asks some very important questions. When a new ball of yarn, Lacy, joins the team, Purl has to make a tough choice. After having successfully infiltrated the boys club, should she break open the gates for others like her to follow through? Or should she continue to reap the benefits while leaving the rest of us behind? The answer to this question is obvious, but for many successful women, attempts to dissolve the boys club could lead to their own expulsion from it and a total disintegration of everything that they have carefully built over the years. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a post-<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/why-has-metoo-scared-every-man\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#MeToo<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">world, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Purl <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has an important lesson for us. Sexual harassment is not the only way in which a woman\u2019s dignity is violated. The casual <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/bringonthegirls-concealed-sexism-indias-music-scene\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sexism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that usually goes unnoticed contributes in alienating women and depriving them of opportunities. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bro culture does not care to accommodate women with their \u201cannoying gossip, high-pitched squeals and pathetic vulnerability\u201d.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Its foundations lie in extremely misguided and stereotypical definitions of masculinity and femininity. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We teach our girls that the whole world is theirs to conquer, yet one of their greatest obstacles often turns out to be a group of man-children who refuse to let them into their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/introverts-extroverts-school-classroom\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cliques<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Purl <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a resilient force that dares to dream differently and nudges us to do the same, and for that I am grateful.<\/span>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pixar\u2019s short film Purl is a commentary on bro culture that thrives at workplaces.
