How My Generation Has Lost its Battle With Eight-Hour Sleep"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\u00a0\n<div class=\"container page-content\"><p>\n\n<span class=\"dropcap\">I<\/span>\n\n<\/div>\nam not a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/music\/ms-subbulakshmi-tamil-brahmin-singer\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">morning person<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, I am an \u201cek aur episode dekh lete hai\u201d at 3<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">30 am kind of a person. I am also young, so almost by default, am also a compulsive coffee person. My need for a strong cuppa joe and it\u2019s subsequent rush of caffeine is as compulsive as Noida residents\u2019 urge to put up statuses that say, \u201cOMG see guyz it\u2019s hailing wow\u201d. Which is why I don\u2019t recall the last time I got a good eight hours of sleep.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of late, a couple of my coworkers and I have also begun a new post-lunch office trend of sorts \u2013 wearing sunglasses indoors. Most of our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/office-emails-coworkers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">colleagues<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> think we\u2019re making some kind of ridiculous fashion statement by strutting around in office with our wayfarers, but only the three of us know that the shades\u2019 sole purpose is to make our afternoon siestas in front of our machines less conspicuous.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s some stats. According to recent studies, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/magazines\/panache\/95-millennials-stressed-in-india-work-is-the-main-trigger\/articleshow\/65636099.cms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">95 per cent of Indian millennials are stressed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/city\/lucknow\/World-Sleep-Day-93-Indians-are-sleep-deprived\/articleshow\/46547288.cms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">93 per cent of us are perpetually sleep-deprived<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This can be attributed to high stress levels and our infamously toxic work culture that encourages the \u201clong hours = hard work\u201d philosophy. Our grandparents\u2019 generation normalised having 12 children, and our parents\u2019 normalised 12-hour work days. While I can forgive my Baa for adding to India\u2019s population crisis (the \u201950s were a boring time, after all), I\u2019m not sure if I can forgive my dad\u2019s generation for adding to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/work-mumbai-rains-home\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">work culture<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> woes of millennial India. Even new-age employers aren\u2019t warming up to work-from-home set ups and are instead considering setting up <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/Industry\/91V94eaBGY8vzpoh721HwL\/Firms-with-millennial-workforce-are-open-to-spaces-for-power.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sleeping pods<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the workplace itself. Because fuck you and your social life, you entitled millennial.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To them, I\u2019d like to ask, \u201cWhat <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/friendship-adulting-social-media\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">social life<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?\u201d Even though being a high-functioning millennial today entails having a thriving social life, it\u2019s actually a pretty daunting task. It\u2019s really hard to just sit at home and do nothing these days, what with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/love-and-sex\/instagram-stories-new-rules-love\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instagram stories<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> constantly reminding me that Sharmita from Marketing is out having kamikaze shots at Khar Social as I stare at my laptop screen wondering whether I sanitised the keyboard. <\/span>\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\">Even though being a high-functioning millennial today entails having a thriving social life, it\u2019s actually a pretty daunting task.<\/blockquote>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In our 20s, there\u2019s no greater juggling act than trying to balance work, a social life, and a decent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/love-and-sex\/couple-fights-power-struggle-couch-bed\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sleep<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cycle. If you\u2019re managing to do alright in your career while maintaining a semblance of a social life and somehow also managing to magically get a full eight hours of sleep every night, then teach me, senpai! Show me the light and enlighten me in adopting your ways. Because even at my best, I can manage to do two out of these three. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like this past month, I focused on social life and sleep, effectively giving my career a bit of a jolt. My January mostly comprised conveniently missing deadlines and showing up late to work much to my employer\u2019s chagrin. Because my first month of 2020 was spent consciously pursuing simpler pleasures like catching up with long-lost buddies in the wee hours of the night over Bade Miyan kebabs and pressing the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/snooze-alarm-lazy-people-frenemy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">snooze button<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> until 9.30 am.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ve often found that when it comes to sleep, our conscience is split into two distinct animals that give us polar opposite advice: the inner night owl and the inner <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/music\/hindi-songs-english-radio-how-my-mothers-playlist-taught-me-to-find-my-own-frequency\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">early bird<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. On a lazy afternoon, when your loud yawn distracts everyone in the boardroom, you might hear a voice inside your head go, \u201cYaar bahut ho gaya, let\u2019s start hitting the hay by 11 pm from now.\u201d This voice is your inner early bird. Wise and responsible, the early bird will tell you exactly what you need to do to get your shit together, sleep-cycle wise. Now, only if we fucking listened to it. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, at 6 pm, when the work day is about to end and your fatigue suddenly disappears, your inner night owl rears its vile, reprehensible head. It makes you conveniently forget about the hot mess that your life and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/indian-parents-career-paths-media-industry\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">career<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are and compels you to shamelessly agree to mid-week drinking plans with seductive whispers of \u201cchal na aaj daaru peete hai!\u201d The most common side-effect of letting the night owl have his way is finding yourself three shots down and clinking the fourth at 2 am yelling, \u201cKal Thursday hai? Cool, kal ka kal dekh lenge bro. Cheers!\u201d You might even find yourself drunkenly reading through the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.deccanherald.com\/content\/664907\/32-indians-losing-sleep-due.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1260 missed WhatsApps<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at 4 am from a group you haven\u2019t replied to since 2017. <\/span>\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\">&#8220;So hell, let\u2019s blame rent prices and teeny tiny flats without living rooms for our inability to sleep as well as we should be.\u201d<\/blockquote>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if you manage to avoid the landmines of late-night social media sprees and instant messaging before bed, those aren\u2019t the most dangerous <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/hindutva-science-technology-india-ayurved-indian-council-of-historical-research-mythology-hanuman\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">technological innovations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> standing between you and your Zs. Even the most disciplined time management mavericks in my life have ended up sacrificing their precious sleep schedule at the altar of binge-worthy <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/netflix-books-readers-block\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Netflix<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows and documentaries. \u201cBas ek aur episode,\u201d the night-owl says at 4.15 am. Sure, waking up fresh as a daisy after a healthy nine-hour rest is great and all. But have you experienced the petty thrill of bingeing <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Haunting of Hill House<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Season 1 until 5 am on a Tuesday?<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reasons for why we do this to ourselves elude me, but at least I\u2019m not alone. In an article titled \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/graziadaily.co.uk\/life\/real-life\/unpicking-millennial-issue-sleep\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unpicking the Millennial Issue with Sleep<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d, journalist Jasmine Kopotsha says, \u201cWe already know that our late-night digital <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/procrastinator-why-punctuality-sucks\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">procrastination<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> isn\u2019t exactly helping the whole sleep thing. Then there\u2019s also the fact that we use our bedrooms for a whole lot more than just sleeping these days. So hell, let\u2019s blame rent prices and teeny tiny flats without living rooms for our inability to sleep as well as we should be.\u201d <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This never-ending circle of bad decisions and worse sleep deprivation must stop somewhere. In time, I will hopefully master the art of balancing work, life, and sleep.
