(and Other Chick Flicks) is Fake News"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"container page-content\"><p><span class=\"dropcap\">A<\/span><\/p><\/div><p>mazon Prime\u2019s latest homegrown offering, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Four More Shots Please!<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, revolves around the rich people problems of four glamorous twenty-something <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/love-and-sex\/long-distance-mumbai-monsoon\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mumbai<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> women who spend a suspicious amount of time at the local bar. There\u2019s Siddhi, the chubby rich girl; Umang, the slutty one; Anjana, the lawyer; and of course, Damini, the journalist. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If this sounds like a hackneyed, insultingly reductive list of characters, that\u2019s because the show offers little more than what we\u2019ve seen a thousand times over in the \u201cchick flick\u201d genre. Anjana and Damini have serious, high-powered jobs that somehow allow them to leave the office and go day-drinking (because duh, four more shots, please!) Umang is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/trans-bill-same-sex-marriage-the-fight-is-far-from-over-for-mumbai-pride-parade-in-a-post-377-world\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bisexual<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which means her chief hobby is fucking random strangers in public bathrooms. Siddhi, despite being a perfectly normal-sized woman, is treated like she\u2019s morbidly obese by her suffocating mother. On second thought, that might be the most realistic part of the show.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s worth noting that \u201cfour gals, big city\u201d is not a revolutionary concept, having been done to death by the ladies of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sex and the City<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and then revived by their insufferable millennial offspring in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Girls<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. To expect relatable characters and situations is to miss the appeal of shows like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/columns\/the-view-at-40-why-is-everyone-having-really-loud-sex-in-four-more-shots-please\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Four More Shots Please!<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is an idealised fantasy ripped from the pages of Cosmopolitan magazine. Perhaps that\u2019s why these chick flicks always seem to feature a very specific, totally inaccurate version of a \u201cjournalist\u201d.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m grateful that, as an aspiring young writer, I never looked up to Carrie in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sex and the City<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or Jenny in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">13 Going On 30 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2004), or Andie from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How To Lose A Guy in 10 Days <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2003). If I had, I would have been sorely disappointed to find that writing a weekly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/mtv-splitsvilla-sunny-leone-ranvijay-singha-licktionary\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dating<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> column like Carrie\u2019s will barely cover the bijli ka bill, never mind a cutting-edge designer wardrobe, and that editors don\u2019t give you ten days to write fluff pieces on how to lose guys.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These fun, thoroughly watchable <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/from-fire-to-ek-ladki-ko-dekha-toh-aisa-laga-a-brief-history-of-homosexuality-in-indian-cinema\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rom-coms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are from a different era, when strong female characters were still rare in Hollywood. But even back then, Andie was writing trash for Composure <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/why-do-we-hate-womens-magazines-feminism\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">magazine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in hopes of eventually becoming a political journalist \u2014 although she immediately gives up a Washington job interview for love. Sixteen years on, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Four More Shots Please! <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is definitely an update on the trope: Damini is not a superficial fashion writer, but an investigative journalist of national renown. She works at a digital publication whose name, in keeping with chick flick tradition, is the laughably terrible \u201cInvestigator.com\u201d. She\u2019s trying to uncover hidden truths and break the story that will win her a major award for the fourth year running.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At least, this is who <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Four More Shots Please!<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> wants Damini to be. The show does attempt to engage with crises in modern media \u2014 Damini lives in fear of the violent, angry <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/politics\/bjp-congress-general-elections-2019-meme-war-social-media\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trolls<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who hound her, a real concern following the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.vice.com\/en_us\/article\/7xyqy4\/2018-was-the-worst-year-on-record-for-violence-against-journalists\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most dangerous<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> year on record for journalists. There\u2019s also an exploration of the systemic issues that have seen a thousand talented Buzzfeed and HuffPo journalists laid off in recent weeks. No one wants to read Damini\u2019s hard-hitting stories, and with the gossip and entertainment section driving all of Investigator.com\u2019s traffic, her job is in jeopardy. At one point, Damini, sitting in a coffee shop, yells at a cluster of girls at the next table who are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/ek-ladki-ko-dekha-toh-aisa-laga-juhi-chawla\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">giggling<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over gossip news, accusing them of putting her out of work. <\/span>\n\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\"><p>To expect relatable characters and situations is to miss the appeal of shows like Four More Shots Please!, which is an idealised fantasy ripped from the pages of Cosmopolitan magazine.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It would be a more powerful scene, and certainly a valid social argument, if it weren\u2019t for one small detail: Damini is out of work because she\u2019s objectively awful at her job. Day-drinking aside, she\u2019s constantly embroiled in costly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/mj-akbar-defamation-case-97-lawyers-sexual-harassment\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">defamation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> lawsuits that are anathema for any company. Worse, she keeps losing those suits, leading to a lot of questions over how exactly she\u2019s kept her status as an award-winning journalist. When Investigator.com is in danger of going under, Damini is off celebrating her birthday in Goa. Which boss in their senses wouldn\u2019t fire her? <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Four More Shots Please!<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> treats Damini no differently from the women journalists who have come before her in the chick flick genre. Just like Jenny and Andie, she\u2019s selfish, unethical, and entitled. Like Carrie, Damini is not just an unlikeable character; her many flaws are framed as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/millennials-financially-illiterate-savings-mutual-funds\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aspirational<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a representation of empowered, no-fucks-to-give womanhood.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a world where <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Wolf of Wall Street<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> exists, there is a certain, pleasurable equality in glorifying women\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/love-and-sex\/to-all-the-misunderstood-dev-ds-weve-loved-before\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bad behaviour<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, too. But feeding into dated stereotypes of working women is both counterproductive and boring. For a chick flick protagonist to be truly empowered, she doesn\u2019t need to be an award-winning, hardboiled reporter.
