{"id":4128,"date":"2016-07-21T12:10:28","date_gmt":"2016-07-21T06:40:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/?p=4128"},"modified":"2026-07-17T20:55:06","modified_gmt":"2026-07-17T15:25:06","slug":"ek-ladki-ko-dekha-toh-aisa-laga-review-sonam-kapoor-lesbian-love-story-sec-377","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/13.207.105.184\/?p=4128","title":{"rendered":"Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga Review: The Lesbian Love Story a Post-377 India Needs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\u00a0\n<p><span class=\"dropcap\">I<\/span>n a country that has an embarrassing history, spanning decades of giggling and guffawing over crass, uni-dimensional portrayals of the LGBTQ community, <\/p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shelly Dhar Chopra\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014with a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/love-and-sex\/lgbtq-lesbian-gay-lesbian-love-story-valentines-day-kiss-day\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lesbian love story<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the heart of the tension around which the narrative is woven \u2014 is a very important and remarkable story. It may be 22 years since <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fire<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Deepa Mehta\u2019s path-breaking film featuring a lesbian relationship, led to theatres being vandalised and posters being burned, but it\u2019s impossible to forget that it\u2019s only a year since the reprehensible <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/take-me-as-i-am-supreme-court-section-377\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Section 377<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court of India. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fact that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a mainstream Bollywood film, backed by industry bigwigs both behind the camera as well as on screen, makes it a watershed moment for Bollywood, given its equally embarrassing history of shameless caricaturing of gay and trans people. So far the little that we\u2019ve seen by way of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/10-years-of-dostana-what-it-meant-for-an-india-where-homosexuality-was-still-a-crime\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LGBTQ characters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in mainstream, masala Bollywood has been restricted to the dual stereotypes of loud, garish, uncontrollably horny men (the various roles of Bobby Darling through the noughties, and Suresh Menon, currently) or the absurdity of actors like Riteish Deshmukh cross-dressing and cracking asinine jokes while playing lead roles; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/kapoor-and-sons-homosexuality\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kapoor &#038; Sons<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> being an exception. Which is why Sweety (Sonam Kapoor Ahuja) and Kuhu\u2019s (Regina Cassandra) shy, hesitant romance is like a breath of fresh air. <\/span>\n\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> starts with a big fat Punjabi wedding. Balbir Chaudhary (Anil Kapoor), nicknamed the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/mukesh-ambani-rich-forbes-antilia-richest-in-asia\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mukesh Ambani<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Moga (a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/sec-377-queer-men-internet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">small town<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Punjab) is in Delhi with his mother Gifty, aka Biji (Madhumalti Kapoor), and children Sweety and Babloo (Abhishek Duhan) for a relative\u2019s wedding. Naturally, there are attempts to find a suitable match for Sweety. Sweety soon catches the eye of a young man who tries to woo her, but unbeknownst to anyone but the watchful Babloo, it is actually her admirer\u2019s sister that makes Sweety\u2019s heart flutter \u2014 which is only revealed to us just before the intermission. The first half of the film takes us through Babloo\u2019s increasing frustration with his little sister\u2019s \u201cillness\u201d. His affection for her wars with his anger over becoming the town\u2019s laughing stock, if her \u201cdirty secret\u201d is revealed. <\/span>\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\">Sonam Kapoor Ahuja plays Sweety with restraint and anguish; her sense of isolation palpable every time she scribbles her sadness into her diary.<\/blockquote>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the same time Sahil (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/people\/rajkummar-rao-behen-hogi-teri-nawazuddin-siddiqui-shruti-hassan-bollywood-films-india\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rajkummar Rao<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), an unsuccessful playwright, falls in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/love-and-sex\/what-is-love-relationship-long-distance-breakup\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">love<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with Sweety after a chance meeting, and follows her back to Moga from Delhi. Admittedly, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is not without its faults. It goes to exhausting lengths to emphasise how beyond the scope of comprehension it is for Sweety\u2019s family to even consider the possibility that their reticent, mousy daughter might be a lesbian. Everyone is convinced that the utterly unacceptable romance she is embroiled in involves a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/muslim-family-weddings-nikaah\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muslim boy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Time that could have been spent in developing the severely under-utilised Kuhu\u2019s character, is spent in belabouring the Chaudhary family\u2019s many quirks. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the second half of the film is well worth the stabs of impatience. Sonam Kapoor Ahuja plays Sweety with restraint and anguish; her sense of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/people\/only-child-lonelines-siblings-family-mother-pets\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">isolation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> palpable every time she scribbles her sadness into her diary. Duhan\u2019s Babloo is believable \u2014 he is boorish and hot-headed, but not evil, while trying desperately to handle a situation he doesn\u2019t understand. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/anil-kapoor-fanney-khan-bollywood\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anil Kapoor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as always, shines in the role of a large-hearted, happy, and doting father, while Rajkummar Rao charms as the startled wannabe lover who finds himself permanently <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/love-and-sex\/friendzone-half-girlfriend-half-boyfriend-sex-romance-relationships\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">friendzoned<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span>\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-45380\" src=\"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1549021886.jpg\" alt=\"ek_ladki_ko dekha_toh_aisa_laga\" width=\"724\" height=\"407\" \/>\n\nVinod Chopra Films\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The central premise of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is enough to make you sit up and take notice, but it\u2019s real victory is in the quietly heartwarming moments it slips between the big ones. Sahil might have accepted his new role in Sweety\u2019s life with decency and dignity, but he fumbles while trying to put a name to her relationship with Kuhu \u2014 simply because he has never encountered one like it before. Babloo is furious with the secret he is forced to keep, but he also cares deeply for his <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/modern-family\/elder-sister-parenting-your-sibling\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sister<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and you can almost empathise with his confusion. Balbir, despite his misgivings, gives his blessings to Sweety to marry Sahil, a Muslim man, believing that that is where her happiness lay. As a clever dig at Bollywood\u2019s own portrayal of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/10-years-of-dostana-what-it-meant-for-an-india-where-homosexuality-was-still-a-crime\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">homosexuality<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Biji is delighted with the lesbian love story in Sahil\u2019s new production because she thinks it makes the play a comedy. The characters in the movie are neither saintly, nor evil \u2014 they are mostly decent human beings who are also flawed, simply playing the roles they\u2019ve been conditioned into. Long before the final climax with a dramatic monologue, the film does its job of making its audience engage with their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/section-377-lgbtq-kantaben-long-fight\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">assumptions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about gay people. <\/span>\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\">His affection for her wars with his anger over becoming the town\u2019s laughing stock, if her \u201cdirty secret\u201d is revealed.<\/blockquote>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And finally there is the more subtly executed, but equally riveting and universally applicable secondary plot of \u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 the weight of parental expectations. Homosexuality might make the movie the \u201cmost unexpected romance of the year\u201d, but it needs to be lauded for its achingly honest and cross-generational portrayal of parent-child relationships, and exactly how far Indian children are prepared to go to not disappoint their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/indian-parents-children-education-retirement\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">parents<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Sweety has resigned herself to a loveless, lonely existence just so her father doesn\u2019t have to face ridicule and shame; Balbir himself has given up his lifelong dream to become a chef because <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">his <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/mothers-judgemental-people-earth\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mother<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> believed the kitchen is not a place for men. Juhi Chawla\u2019s delightfully colourful Chatro, in a poignant moment, talks about how she spent 22 years living for her children and parents, before finally deciding to get <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/love-and-sex\/guide-dating-40s-divorcee-edition\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">divorced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and living life for herself. Sahil, as independent as he is, turns to his mother in his darkest moment. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The parent-child dynamic is the invisible character in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, underpinning every character\u2019s motivation, and it can both imprison and set people free. In one scene, Sweety tells Sahil in a matter-of-fact manner that the only way out of her loneliness is to either run away to London with her girlfriend, or kill herself. Replace homosexuality with any of the million things unacceptable to Indian parents because \u201clog kya kahenge\u201d \u2014 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/ankit-saxena-murder-inter-faith-marriages\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inter-faith<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or inter-caste marriages, or even unconventional career choices, and the movie\u2019s message will still strike home. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All in all, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">might just be the imperfect but transformative work of commercial cinema we\u2019ve all been waiting for \u2014 one that forces society to engage with homosexuality (or any other frowned-upon life choice\/inclination) by appealing to people\u2019s humanity, not intellect.
