Had the film released today, in an age of hyper-nationalism, his unfading bond with his desh and mitti would have made him the perfect desi boy to Priyanka Chopra\u2019s desi girl. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But three years prior to being the adarsh pardesi \u2013 feeding pigeons at Trafalgar Square and reminiscing about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/people\/the-many-ballis-of-my-punjab\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Punjab<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Simran\u2019s bauji was a naughty NRI. In Rajiv Rai\u2019s 1992 cult classic <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vishwatma<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Puri played Azghar Jurhad, a suave Kenyan-Indian businessman. He is a reputed figure in the African nation but discreetly operates a notorious criminal organisation in India called the Blue Panther. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trimurti Films: 1. Marvel Studios: 0.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jurhad is a duplicitous <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/patriotic-comment-deshbhakti-edition\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">deshbhakt<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He celebrates Bharatiya Ekta Divas with his desi brethren in Kenya while printing fake Indian currency notes in his den. \u201cYahaan main Bharat ka deshbhakt kehlaaunga aur wahaan main desh ko bhrasht karunga,\u201d he chuckles deviously.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tridev<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1989) was Rajiv Rai\u2019s bigger <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/kaushal-khurrana-where-does-shah-rukh-khan-stand\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">box office<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> draw, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vishwatma<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to me, is wackier and more entertaining of the two, thanks to the outlandish characters, a superlative soundtrack that outlived its era, and some campy dialogues about deshbhakti. <\/span>\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\">He celebrates Bharatiya Ekta Divas with his desi brethren in Kenya while printing fake Indian currency notes in his den.<\/blockquote>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the film, an honest police officer, Prabhat Singh (Sunny Deol), is sent on a secret mission to Kenya to capture Azghar. Prabhat\u2019s sidekick being Akash (Chunkey Pandey), the estranged brother of Azghar\u2019s slain rival. Their point of contact in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/indians-abroad-hate-countrymen\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">foreign country<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is Surya Pratap (Naseeruddin Shah), a Kenyan supercop with Indian roots. Surya Pratap\u2019s heart beats for his desh proving not all patriots wear khadi \u2013 some wear khaki and inflict maximum damage.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Surya Pratap is unaware of the true intent behind Prabhat and Akash\u2019s visit, the duo meets Renuka (Sonam, not Kapoor), whose newly-wed sister was raped by Azghar\u2019s son and her brother-in-law; Akash\u2019s brother is killed by Azghar. Not complicated at all. Together they vow to bring their dastardly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/love-and-sex\/idea-of-someone-love-relationships-ladybird\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nemesis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> down.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their quest leads them at a discotheque run by Azghar\u2019s henchmen where they find Kusum (Divya Bharti), a girl Prabhat had refused to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/technology-love-sex-relationships-procreation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">marry<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, dancing. She had decided to follow him out to Kenya and explains her motive by cannily singing, \u201cSaat samundar paar main tere peechhe peechhe aa gayi.\u201d What\u2019s love without some good old, filmi-style stalking? Thank goodness for visa on arrival.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This high-risk mission is jeopardised when Prabhat and Akash are apprehended by Surya Pratap who believes they are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/bollywood-sexual-harassment-alok-nath-nana-patekar\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">harassing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a respectable citizen. He labels their conduct as \u201cBharat ke sheesh ko neeche jhukana.\u201d Manoj Kumar would be proud.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But Surya Pratap is in for a rude shock when he discovers his late wife had committed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/people\/suicide-point-vashi-bridge-mumbai\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">suicide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after being molested by who else, but Azghar\u2019s rapey son, Rajnath. Remorseful, he unites with his Indian friends to defeat Azghar and gang. The final showdown is classic \u201990s single-screen stuff. There\u2019s the trippy track \u201cToofan\u201d hinting at the evil empire\u2019s imminent fall, heroines shimmying in sexy outfits they so conveniently scored from the villain\u2019s lair, and a head-spinning chase sequence with multiple cars banging into each other that\u2019s bound to give Rohit Shetty an identity crisis.<\/span>\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\">No one was asked to prove their patriotism and no one said, uska patriotism mere patriotism se safed kaise.<\/blockquote>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In spite of a brooding Deol flaunting his dhaai kilo ke haath in sleeveless vests, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vishwatma<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s scene stealer are its flamboyant villains. His ridiculously catchy name notwithstanding, Azghar Jurhad is one of Amrish Puri\u2019s most fun roles. He mouths epic lines like these: \u201cAzghar kise kab aur kahaan nigal jaata hai, yeh toh marne waale ko bhi pataa nahin chalta.\u201d The ruthless crime kingpin is a swanky dresser, smokes expensive cigars, sports a shoulder-length silver mane, and isn\u2019t shy to shake a leg \u2013 basically, a \u201990s\u2019 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/vijay-mallaya-extradition-indian-government-air-india\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mallya<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A furious-looking Azghar breaking into a silly dance and screaming in Swahili in between \u201cToofan\u201d is perhaps <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vishwatma\u2019<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s greatest moment.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This \u201990s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/mumbai-pothole-death-traffic-rain-monsoon\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">villains<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> starter pack also has Azghar\u2019s younger brother Naagdansh \u2013 literally the loudest villain ever \u2013 who screams right into everyone&#8217;s eardrums, serial rapist son Rajnath, and future son-in-law Tapasvi Gunjal. The mullet-sporting, flute-playing \u201ckalyug ka Kanhaiya\u201d Tapasvi (Gulshan Grover) is a craven creep. He is also the greatest speaker of Hindi in Bollywood history since <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chupke Chupke\u2019s<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Pyare Mohan Allahabadi. And then, Azghar\u2019s operatives in India \u2013 the troika of Nilu Brothers \u2013 Bada Nilu, Majhla Nilu, and Chhota Nilu. While the Wright Brothers invented the first successful <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/international-flights-low-costs-travelling\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">airplane<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, our very own Nilu Brothers smuggled an ingenious dye that prints fake Indian 100-rupee note. Where\u2019s demonetisation when you need it?<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rajiv Rai\u2019s films are known for their high style quotient and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vishwatma<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is top-shelf stuff. The flashy aesthetic, delightful sights soaked in the united colours of Kenya, leering baddies in bathrobes, and the bling happy <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/rani-padmavati-burning-queen-allauddin-khilji-rajput-history-india-women\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heroines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with fabulous hair make it a glamorous, escapist fare.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In its dollops of OTTness, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vishwatma<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a capsule from a time Bollywood heroines followed their men around like lovesick puppies, the heroes could beat up a dozen men, and there was no internet to tell you that your favourite hits were rip-offs. Imagine growing up and being flabbergasted by how deeply the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=wTkfK2g4pKI\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pet Shop Boys<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QiwzTp-h0Nk\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Kids on The Block<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> influenced this film\u2019s music. Et tu, Viju Shah?<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s all that, and some desh prem. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/naseeruddin-shah-anupam-kher-everything-that-is-wrong-in-being-just-a-tolerant-nation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Naseeruddin Shah<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> disillusioned with the state of India and hounded by new-age patriots for saying so, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vishwatma<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reminds us of more innocuous times \u2013 Shah in a silk dhoti-kurta and Mysore peta cheerfully singing \u201cMain kahin bhi rahun iss jahaan mein, mera dil hai Hindustan mein,\u201d in \u201cDil le gayi teri bindiya\u201d, the greatest masala national integration song. A time when both desi and pardesi could love India, sing about it and be merry.
