Why It\u2019s Impossible for Middle-Class Indians to Declutter"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span class=\"dropcap\">M<\/span>arie Kondo will be pleased to know that I haven\u2019t seen her latest show <\/p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tidying Up<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, because deactivating <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/technology\/could-censorship-spell-the-end-of-netflix-and-chill\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Netflix<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was my 2019 resolution to declutter. But even though I\u2019ve skipped the show that\u2019s \u201csparking joy\u201d in the lives of millions of people, I understand the life credo it comes from. Minimalism. In other words, cutting out the bullshit. \u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The idea of a decluttering first appealed to me when I read Fumio Sasaki. In his book, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Goodbye Things, on Minimalist Living<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Sasaki talks about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/culture\/ikea-india-meatballs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">minimalism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a way of enhancing the quality of life, which he thought has severely deteriorated because of the importance that material objects hold in our lives. Armed with his new idea and ever ready to adopt a new fad, I decided to approach my mother with it. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mom, we collect too much stuff, I broach the topic one afternoon, just while she was eating a mango, usually her happiest moment in the day. To strengthen my case, I throw in a line from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fight Club<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cThings you own end up owning you.\u201d Pat comes her reply: \u201cNeelam Aunty preserves even <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/restaurant-bill-check-gst-tip\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">restaurant bills<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of her sushi dinner in Los Angeles from two years ago.\u201d <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My mother has convinced herself that we are way ahead on the minimalism curve and gone back to her mangoes. I try another tack that doesn\u2019t involve getting into a Neelam Aunty comparison. \u201cAre you really passionate about that 20-year-old Air India Calendar which has a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/linkedin-photo-employee-employer-office\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">photograph<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of a Ravi Varma painting for each month of the year?\u201d <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat\u2019s part of my <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/millennials-artists-selfies-van-gogh-self-portait\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">art collection<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d she tells me, shocked at my casual dismissal of her heirloom. \u201cI can frame them into paintings and hang them on the wall behind the dining table,\u201d she continues. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBut doesn\u2019t that wall already have the lovely Tanjore that you made to order? And if you haven\u2019t framed them for 20 years, do you really think you will do it now?\u201d <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLet go of the idea of \u2018someday\u2019, discard now,\u201d I tell her, quoting Sasaki. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLet go of Sasaki,\u201d she shoots back, before tearing off six pages of the calendar which are now going to be framed into paintings. <\/span>\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\">In one of his key principles, the author reminds us that our house is not a museum.<\/blockquote>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I realise I\u2019ve made the wrong move. I should\u2019ve started smaller. My eyes go to the mugs in our house. Now, between impulse shopping on the streets, to deliberate purchases of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/series\/hype-weds-hysteria\/the-safawallah-of-paris\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">souvenir<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> mugs with pictures of Sri Lankan baby elephants and Ladakhi yaks, to receiving elaborate tea sets as housewarming presents, we have about 50 tea and coffee mugs for the three of us. I talked my mother through donating 30 of them using my most soothing Sasaki San voice. At the 31st, she threatened to throw me out, so we let the mugs live on but I had made some progress. I convinced her to throw away our entire collection of Shivsagar plastic containers and cloth bags. She drew the line at torn T-shirts, Surf Excel containers, and Absolut Vodka bottles insisting that they deserve a second life as dusters, storage boxes, and money plant holders. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I had no comeback, so I turn to Sasaki San. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In one of his key principles, the author reminds us that our house is not a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/madame-tussauds-delhi-wax-musuem-regal-cinema\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">museum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As I read it out to mom, we both look at the monstrous hand-like figurine made of Burma teak which we bought in Mauritius 10 years ago. \u201cIt\u2019s not a museum piece,\u201d my mom immediately comes to its defence. \u201cIt\u2019s a tissue holder.\u201d She then rushes to dump a bunch of tissues on \u201cthe hand\u201d; I\u2019m impressed by the con job. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnd the Buddha,\u201d I ask her. \u201cIs that a towel holder?\u201d The Buddha, a delicately carved wooden artefact that hangs next to our television has \u201cmush\u201d value. It was gifted to us by my father\u2019s loyal taxi driver Ahmed in Oman, who taught him how to say \u201cWalaikum assalam\u201d and \u201cMabrook\u201d, and almost convinced him into fasting during <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/culture\/ramzan-muslim-religious-festival\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ramzan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Since the \u201cmush value\u201d is not really hers, she brutally packs it up and and tells dad to remember Ahmed whenever he eats Omani dates. I stifle a giggle. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I tell her she can also do the same, if she really needs an Absolut Vodka bottle for the money plant, she can ask the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/grub\/soan-papdi-homage-to-the-nice-guy-of-diwali-mithais\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">neighbour<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for a spare one. Be social, be a borrower, says Sasaki after all. But she is incensed. \u201cHamare itne bhi bure din nahi aaye hain,\u201d she tells me with eyes blazing. The idea of going to Neelam Aunty to borrow her oven everytime she is overcome by an impulse to bake Oreo brownies, seems like the ultimate tragedy. <\/span>\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\">We comfortably come to the conclusion that this as unacceptable to Indian sanskar as beef, Arundhati Roy, and momos.<\/blockquote>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Imagine if our relatives get to know that the mattress in the guest bedroom has been borrowed? Imagine them sniggering about what we did with all the tax-free Gulf money. \u201cDo you want to rent a lehenga for Sonu Bua\u2019s daughter\u2019s wedding,\u201d she asks me cannily. We comfortably come to the conclusion that this as unacceptable to Indian sanskar as beef, Arundhati Roy, and momos. So we reject this one for the sake of our Indianness. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Days after this failed de-cluttering attempt, I get a call at work from mom. \u201cBy the way I finally read Sasaki&#8217;s book,\u201d she says. Principle No 46 says, \u201cOne in, one out.\u201d So if I get rid of the matka in our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/sexist-kitchens-indian-men-home-cooks\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kitchen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, can I buy a nice new ceramic painted one as a replacement? And all those non-stick pans? I\u2019m replacing them with cast iron. \u201cGood idea, mom,\u201d I\u2019m going to follow that principle for my shoes,\u201d I tell her. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patience Sasaki San, we will get there&#8230; first we\u2019ll dump the dabbas and then I\u2019ll dare to get rid of my shoes.<\/span>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My mother believes that we are way ahead on the minimalism curve because unlike her friends she does not preserve restaurant bills from two years ago.
