The author of the unambiguously titled piece, \u201cThe Depressing Phenomenon of Men Who Ask Their Dates No Questions\u201d had spoken to over 250 women, who all seemed to agree that the men that they\u2019d been going to dinner with, spoke about everything from snowboarding to phone chargers that don\u2019t fit into plug points and \u201chow most people pronounce \u2018namaste\u2019 wrong,\u201d but were somehow unable to ask their dates anything beyond their names. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Look, I get it. I know one \u2013 or 250 \u2013 anecdotal swallows do not a summer make. But whether you\u2019re in Minneapolis or Mumbai, in the age of \u201cThank you, next\u201d and \u201cfuccbois\u201d and a lexicon that\u2019s less \u201cclandestine meeting\u201d and more \u201ccatch and release\u201d, the dating swamp <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> feel like it\u2019s infested by narcissistic, overgrown, emotionally stunted frat boys. At worst. At best, they\u2019re men who have no idea how to be\u2026 people.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We saw an example of this utter cluelessness\/<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/koffee-with-karan-hardik-pandya-isnt-a-brat-he-is-an-outright-misogynist\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">frat boy behaviour<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this past week, when the notorious <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Koffee With Karan<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> episode featuring cricketers Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul aired. If you haven\u2019t seen it yet, congratulations on spending half an hour of your life doing something productive. But if you have seen the episode \u2013 which has now been pulled off streaming platforms \u2013 you\u2019ll know Pandya spoke of women with as much finesse as, and minus the cuteness of, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.in\/search?q=doge+meme+picking+up+chicks&#038;tbm=isch&#038;source=iu&#038;ictx=1&#038;fir=CekSyogw_ERuVM%253A%252C-92gVN2_ZLHjhM%252C_&#038;usg=AI4_-kSKC8ltobjJtEKUiXhjQb8hURAUHA&#038;sa=X&#038;ved=2ahUKEwiP-6rI-OnfAhWUA3IKHYe-ClwQ9QEwAXoECAIQBg#imgrc=CekSyogw_ERuVM:\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this doge meme<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pandya, and his wingman Rahul, who witnessed the trainwreck his friend was initiating, also failed to check his friend\u2019s misogyny. They were roundly cancelled by social media, which elicited a round of non-apology apologies. The BCCI rapped the men, dropped them from ODIs against Australia, and ordered an inquiry into the whole affair. <\/span>\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\">I know one \u2013 or 250 \u2013 anecdotal swallows do not a summer make.<\/blockquote>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is necessary to call out Pandya\u2019s all-out tackiness and ingrained misogyny \u2013 and this is perhaps the only acceptable use of the phrase, \u201cthey were asking for it\u201d. But let\u2019s admit that it is also easy. Pandya <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a patsy, but as cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bhogleharsha\/status\/1082916533267922944?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1082916533267922944&#038;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.republicworld.com%2Fsports-news%2Fcricket-news%2Fpost-hardik-pandya-controversy-harsha-bhogle-lauds-bccis-tough-stance-but-has-one-important-suggestion-take-a-look\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tweeted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, this was an opportunity for the BCCI to spend \u201ctime in sensitising these young players to life beyond the dressing room; to getting them outside the bubble that is inevitable given the adulation they get.\u201d It is difficult to expect men like Pandya to be models of woke behaviour, when their world is a locker room, a cesspit of testosterone. Until then, Pandya and co. will fail the test of being people.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s way harder to reconcile the insidious comments of men supposedly espousing liberal values&#8230; and last week seemed like a competitive misogyny contest. The top contender was the wild card entry, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/rafale-rahul-gandhi-cbi-pm-modi\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rahul Gandhi<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The politician, who, over the course of one smart social media campaign and riding the tailwinds of electoral wins in unwinnable states, has gone from Pappu to Pass, made not one, but two missteps. Gandhi once couldn\u2019t stop parroting those two highly sexy, highly expedient, highly meme-able words \u201cwomen empowerment\u201d. This week, in reference to defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman, implied that PM Modi had a \u201cmahila\u201d defend him during the Rafale debate in parliament. Later that same day, he doubled down by tweeting the exhortation \u201cbe a man\u201d aimed at the PM. FFS, really Rahul? Have you been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5lVZ6G4OClk\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">talking to Aakash<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dil Chahta Hai<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then there is Shashi Tharoor. That great liberal hope who has single-handedly spearheaded India\u2019s campaign for colonial reparations and righting historical wrongs (and might still be our only shot at bringing back the koh-i-noor), showed no such alacrity when it came to the entry of women in Sabarimala. By going against the spirit of the Supreme Court order that upheld the right of women to pray at the temple, Tharoor\u2019s craven \u201cI only listen to my constituency\u201d remarks landed him in the august company of PM Modi, who\u2019d also labelled Sabarimala \u201ctradition\u201d. (We cancelled Shashi Tharoor also earlier this week \u2013 read all about it <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/politics\/tharoor-liberals-politicians-sabarimala\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.) <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This Tradition X Mardaangi event, was capped off by Army chief General Bipin Rawat who pulled the next number. Rawat is well-known for expressing sentiments like women shouldn\u2019t serve in combat positions because they will complain of men peeping while they change, and for endorsing the actions of Major Leetul Gogoi who tied a Kashmiri man to his jeep and paraded him across villages. This time, in response to a query at a press conference, he said <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/bipin-rawat-indian-army-homosexuality\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gay sex<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will not be permitted in the army. Rawat is not technically wrong since the Army Act still holds homosexuality criminal, but his views betray the same attitude as your WhatsApp uncle who has worked out the complex equation \u201cHomosexuality = Effeminacy >> Inferiority LOL\u201d. \u00a0<\/span>\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\">The crisis in the CBI can now only be considered with detached amusement.<\/blockquote>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is there really that much of a difference between Rawat, the PM, Rahul Gandhi, Shashi Tharoor, and Hardik Pandya, who at this point just seem like hues on the Pantone shade card of sexism and ingrained patriarchy? More importantly, who wins the competitive misogyny sweepstakes? Difficult to say, but we all know who lost, i.e., all of us. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maybe we should all cheer up. It\u2019s only the second week of the new year. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/politics\/cbi-chief-alok-verma-removal-nation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">crisis in the CBI<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can now only be considered with detached amusement. The 10 per cent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/politics\/reservation-quota-upper-caste-ten-percent\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">upper-caste reservation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> okayed by the parliament has sounded the bugle for election season proper. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/the-accidental-prime-minister-review-a-disappointing-launch-for-the-bjps-2019-campaign\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Accidental Prime Minister<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is actually a film. And <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/happy-birthday-vivek-oberoi-saathiya-company\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vivek Anand Oberoi<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has a career again.
