{"id":3985,"date":"2016-04-23T04:50:07","date_gmt":"2016-04-22T23:20:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/?p=3985"},"modified":"2026-07-17T20:51:35","modified_gmt":"2026-07-17T15:21:35","slug":"uri-film-review-vicky-kaushal-indian-army-modi-election","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/13.207.105.184\/?p=3985","title":{"rendered":"Uri Review: Why a Film on Surgical Strikes Cannot Be Considered Harmless in an Election Year"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span class=\"dropcap\">D<\/span>ebutante writer-director Aditya Dhar\u2019s <\/p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uri<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> opens just like one would expect a paean to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/bipin-rawat-indian-army-homosexuality\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indian army<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to: A jawan singing to a bus full of soldiers travelling through an insurgency-affected forest area in Manipur. It\u2019s evident by the way the camera focuses on the jawan\u2019s face that we\u2019re minutes away from witnessing a tragedy unfold. True to script, their happiness is torn apart by the sound of a blast. Just as the bus halts, an assault of bullets begins; the soldiers are ambushed by terrorists who eventually bomb the bus. In case, this wasn\u2019t enough to convince us that our army men lead a dangerous life, the last shot loops back to the lifeless, bullet-ridden body of the singing jawan. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s the kind of effective emotional manipulation that unequivocally demands our patriotism and is a familiar device in wartime films. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uri<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, based on the 2016 surgical strike carried out by the Indian Army in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir, barely 11 days after Pakistani terrorists crossed the LoC and killed 19 Indian soldiers, is no different. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uri<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> doesn\u2019t even pretend to challenge the format: Its hero, Major Vihaan Shergill (a sincere <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/vicky-kaushal-masaan-raazi-manmarziyaan\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vicky Kaushal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is a perfectionist, whose reputation is built on guaranteeing that every soldier of his troop returns alive after a mission. He\u2019s also the quintessential avenging underdog: Vihaan\u2019s mother suffers from Alzheimer\u2019s, his best friend is killed in the Uri attack, and his pregnant sister is widowed. And like Vihaan, almost every character in the film displays his patriotism like a name-tag \u2013 right from a teenager who chants the war cry of her father\u2019s military unit, to a pilot (Kirti Kulhari) whose husband dies while fighting for the country.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-44404\" src=\"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1547190852.jpg\" alt=\"Uri Review\" width=\"724\" height=\"407\" \/>\n\nVicky Kaushal brings tremendous sincerity to <em>Uri<\/em>.\n\nRSVP Films\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet the slick-looking film (shot by Mitesh Mirchandani of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neerja<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fame) restrains itself from heightening its jingoism, even though it only concerns itself with the bravery on the field and not the moral and mental implications of violence. It&#8217;s even cinematically competent, a far cry from the on-the-nose gaudiness of JP Dutta\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Border<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (or any recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/people\/akshay-kumar-bollywood-birthday-gold\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Akshay Kumar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> outing). So we\u2019re spared stock fillers of soldiers huddled together crying while reading letters from their families or Major Vihaan going \u201cJai Hind\u201d every five minutes. Although Paresh Rawal saying, \u201cYeh naya Hindustan hai, yeh ghar mein ghusega bhi aur maarega bhi\u201d still feels as off-note as it did in the trailer.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the problem with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uri<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> starts once you register that the film substitutes its absence of jingoism with its abundance of government propaganda. For instance, one scene is dedicated to PM Narendra Modi (Rajit Kapur) reminding a Major that India is his mother, whom he is obligated to safeguard. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In interviews before the film\u2019s release, Dhar <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hindustantimes.com\/bollywood\/uri-the-surgical-strike-director-aditya-dhar-says-his-film-is-not-to-show-pakistan-in-a-bad-light\/story-AjaeH05CihrV26fb900DOI.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">admitted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that he had to take permission from the Indian army before shooting <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uri <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the limitations of that interference are evident. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uri<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is quick to identify Pakistan\u2019s reluctance to curb terrorism as the sole reason behind four terrorists killing security forces sleeping in tents at the Uri base camp. But it never addresses the elephant in the room: That it was also an intelligence failure. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Back in 2016, an initial investigation into the attack had revealed security lapses at the Uri camp. Tall grass and bushes in the perimeter of the camp weren\u2019t trimmed as per protocol, allowing the terrorists to sneak in undetected. The two Indian guards manning the camp couldn\u2019t discover the breach. And most damning of all, despite being provided <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.asianage.com\/india\/security-lapses-despite-specific-intel-led-uri-attack-investigators-433\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">intelligence inputs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that indicated a potential terror attack, the army and the government had ignored it. Yet none of these lapses find their way into the film. What does though, is the implication that the ruling government was the most significant factor behind the \u201csuccess\u201d of the surgical strike.<\/span>\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\"><em>Uri <\/em>fails to highlight the the breach that led to the deadly attacks was also an intelligence failure.<\/blockquote>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s precisely why it\u2019s impossible to view \u2013 and enjoy \u2013 films like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uri <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in a vacuum, especially in the current political climate. How do you turn a blind eye to the timing of the release of film which is clearly endorsing the ruling party, just a few months ahead of the general elections? <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uri<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> glorifies a government that has milked dry the idea of patriotism and the sacrifices of soldiers for political leverage. A government that has introduced the word \u201canti-national\u201d to our modern lexicon as an indictment of citizens who veer even a little from any official narrative.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, it\u2019s a far greater disservice to watch<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Uri <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">without acknowledging the context of the film: The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/music\/narendra-modi-india-2016-2017-demonetisation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Modi<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> government\u2019s unabashed publicity of a cross-border raid \u2013 standard for armed forces around the world, including our own \u2013 that was never intended to be a public spectacle in the first place. Arun Shourie had at the time <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/music\/narendra-modi-india-2016-2017-demonetisation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">criticised<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the government for \u201cover-hyping a military strike\u201d. Two years later, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uri<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> serves as its mouthpiece \u2013 and it\u2019s even more dangerous because it is a compelling cinematic accomplishment, that can&#8217;t just be written off. Instead of dumbing itself down to cater to only a target audience, it presents a government-approved version of events packaged so sophisticatedly that it could appeal to almost anyone. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s then upto us to see <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uri<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as both, an election manifesto championing a government that is still in power, as well as a distraction from its criticisms. If the film had released 20 years in the future, it could actually have been considered a tribute to our armed forces.
