oya Akhtar\u2019s <\/span>Gully Boy<\/span><\/i>, inspired by the slums-to-riches journey of gully rappers Divine and Naezy, released its trailer today and made one thing crystal clear: If there\u2019s ever yet another sequel to <\/span>Singh is Kinng<\/span><\/i>, it\u2019s Ranveer Singh\u2019s<\/a> for the taking. Last year, Singh \u2013 a Bollywood A-lister if ever there was one \u2013 opened and ended the year with two excellent performances, which also happened to be box-office hits. In fact, it was his performance that made it impossible to not hold the two films to the same extraordinary standard. <\/span>\n\nIn Sanjay Leela Bhansali\u2019s <\/span>Padmaavat,<\/span><\/i> Singh essayed Allauddin Khilji, creating an unhinged invader so unwavering about his own inhumanity, it tricked the audience into empathising with him, rather than the film\u2019s milquetoast hero played by Shahid Kapoor. And in last month\u2019s problematic <\/span>Simmba<\/span><\/i>, Singh, who played a boisterous cop, elevated the Rohit Shetty universe several notches. <\/span>\n\nAnd yet, disparate as they are, both these performances share a common thread \u2013 Khilji and Simmba are characters borne out of the excess that Singh embodies. In the last couple of years, a majority of Singh\u2019s commercially acclaimed films have him mainstreaming this kind of behaviour that, in millennial-speak, is labelled \u201cextra\u201d. The same sort of OTT-ness that defined the Govinda era \u2013 but was still considered a speciality. Think about it: Bittu from <\/span>Band Baaja Baaraat<\/span><\/i>, Ram from <\/span>Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela<\/span><\/i>, or even Kabir Mehra from <\/span>Dil Dhadakne Do<\/span><\/i> are characters who benefit from Ranveer Singh\u2019s natural exuberance and larger-than-life idiosyncrasies. <\/span>\n\nAnd yet, Singh\u2019s most evocative performance has been as Varun Shrivastav, a thief moonlighting as a poetic lover in the criminally underrated <\/span>Lootera.<\/span><\/i>\n\n\"Gully\n

The Gully Boy<\/em> trailer shows great promise.<\/p>\n

Excel Entertainment<\/p>\n<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n\nPerhaps, that\u2019s why the spectacular trailer of Zoya Akhtar\u2019s coming-of-age rap-drama instantly stands out. Six years after <\/span>Lootera<\/span><\/i>, here is Singh, playing against type, once again. Here is Ranveer Singh, letting a character enrich him, instead of the other way round. As evident from the <\/span>Gully Boy<\/span><\/i> trailer, Singh, plays Naved Shaikh aka Naezy, an unassuming slum-dweller whose words \u2013 as the tagline emphasises \u2013 set him free. Throughout most of the two-minute trailer, Singh disappears completely, emerging as a rapper, who just wants his voice to be heard.<\/span>\n\nCome to think of it, the <\/span>Gully Boy<\/span><\/i> trailer points to another return to roots. Like Singh, Zoya Akhtar\u2019s biggest hits have been films, set in a universe where she is most comfortable, revelling in a brand of indulgence. Whether it is channelling the lavish duplicity of a wealthy South Delhi family\u2019s fraught ties in <\/span>Dil Dhadakne Do,<\/span><\/i> or while painting a millennial wanderlust love-letter to Spain in <\/span>Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara<\/a><\/span><\/i>. Yet <\/span>Gully Boy<\/span><\/i>, in contrast, seems to have exchanged that comfort in favour of authenticity \u2013 an obvious hark back to the style of Akhtar\u2019s debut film <\/span>Luck By Chance<\/span><\/i>. Except, this time she\u2019s training her lens on music, instead of on the people lip-syncing them.<\/span>\n\nIn about a month, we\u2019ll come to know whether <\/span>Gully Boy<\/span><\/i> \u2013 \u00a0a film whose mere existence legitimises gully rap as dining table conversation \u2013 examines the struggle for fame and success, as succinctly as <\/span>Luck By Chance<\/span><\/i>.
