{"id":3966,"date":"2016-06-01T13:35:31","date_gmt":"2016-06-01T08:05:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/?p=3966"},"modified":"2026-07-17T20:51:10","modified_gmt":"2026-07-17T15:21:10","slug":"bandersnatch-review-diy-film","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/13.207.105.184\/?p=3966","title":{"rendered":"Bandersnatch Review: A Tedious DIY Film for a Generation That Hates Making Choices"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\u00a0\n<p><span class=\"dropcap\">L<\/span>et me first settle this: I\u2019m a huge fan of Charlie Brooker, the brain behind <\/p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/arre-checklist-leaks-black-mirrors-upcoming-aadhaar-episode\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black Mirror<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. To me, he was first the satirist whose acerbity was as infamously toxic as it was implausibly funny. Well before <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black Mirror, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">his TV column \u201cScreen Burn\u201d is a thing of legend. Calling David Cameron, then the British PM \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2015\/may\/11\/cameron-rebooted-five-more-years-tory-government-no-one-predicted\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a computerised toe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d or describing criticism of new technology as \u201cnothing more than a little foetus of nostalgia jerking in your gut,\u201d Brooker tore through the envelope, let alone push it. He foresaw<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/tv-and-radio\/shortcuts\/2015\/sep\/21\/pigs-prime-minister-black-mirror-ashcroft-allegation-charlie-brooker\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> piggate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, back when the show was just this oddball anthology that came and disappeared from British TV. So the first thought that came to my mind when I heard that the title of the<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Black Mirror<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> film was <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bandersnatch<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was that it was so much better than Benedict Cumberbatch. The second though was a sense, among other things:<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Excitement \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Super-excitement<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it a game? Is it a software patch? Is it a data mining tool? One thing\u2019s for sure, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bandersnatch <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is not a film. The show\/game follows Stefan (Fionn Whitehead), a typically hyper-curious, nerve-wrecked serial-killer-in-the-making kind of boy who wants to adapt a choose-your-own-ending novel called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bandersnatch<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (kinda like RL Stine\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Goosebumps<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) into a video game. Stefan takes his pitch to a corporation and he must decide, sorry, we must decide his <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/modern-family\/mother-parents-approval-millennials\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">choices<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from there on. Given his solemn, wasted mug, and cadaverous eyes, Stefan is pretty much headed for tragedy one way or the other. But we get to take him there. That is about it, really. You get to be the one making the fun choices, like kicking dad in the balls and some not-so-fun like kicking dad in the balls?<\/span>\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-44262\" src=\"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1546939033.jpg\" alt=\"bandersnatch_review\" width=\"579\" height=\"407\" \/>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since it was released on Netflix, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/technology\/flipkart-shopathon-marathon-sale-indian-consumers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tech junkies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have had their knickers in a twist. After all, it\u2019s a nice showpiece, like a digital clock that announces the time when you ask it. But we\u2019re also in an age where a clock can\u2019t just be a clock, it has do so much more. By the way can you imagine the ideas the porn industry is coming up with after this? <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Mindblown \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0What is porn?<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Save it. It\u2019s going to happen either way, much like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bandersnatch<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which travels from head-scratching to ball-scratching pretty darn quickly. I mean, I get what it\u2019s trying to do, but I don\u2019t want to goddamn choose someone\u2019s cereal, or the song they must listen to. Hell I don\u2019t know what I want to listen to half the time. I could live with the world being a little less <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/newsbeat-46747512\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interactive<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> really. I pine for a time when the IRCTC website can just scan my retina and not ask me to fill captchas; a world where I am asked to do less. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But let\u2019s get serious. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bandersnatch<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a gimmick, a flashtube you must enter, a new toothpaste you must taste before declaring it as unfamiliar \u2013 duh! The trouble with<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Bandersnatc<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">h is that it wants to raise the stakes on our end, but in doing so lowers our investment. It wants us to care for the hyperbolic relationship we suddenly find ourselves in with previously lifeless screens. But it forgets that there must be life in the stories we watch and the characters we invest in.<\/span>\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\">Our own lives are interactive and demanding at each turn.<\/blockquote>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I don\u2019t suppose it\u2019s as novel either: Navigating the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/technology\/india-eu-usa-internet-freedom\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">internet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for a two-bedroom flat, a winter jacket, or a sex toy can \u2013 and is \u2013 often, just as intriguing. Which only begs the question, why do it? Why do something that is neither fresh, nor memorable, neither challenging, nor groundbreaking? Even for someone like Brooker, who is as critical of the wares of electronic media, this feels like an oddity. An oddity, that he perhaps knows, will be lapped up by millennials. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If there is one thing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/people\/in-betweeners-millennials-internet-youtube\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">millennials<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are addicted to apart from shadow-dressing themselves, it is indecision. We don\u2019t know what to do, what to want, what to demand, yet talk about it anyway. The scrollbar was perhaps invented for the millennial brain. If instagram feeds the ego, e-shopping fills for time. Either way, they are exercises in the littering of worth.<\/span>\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-44261\" src=\"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1546939032.jpg\" alt=\"bandersnatch_review\" width=\"663\" height=\"407\" \/>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bandersnatch<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is as captivating as an online sale; a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/video-games-adult-gamers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">game<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> played within margins, a parsimonious conference of the mind, body, heart and reality \u2013 with neither entirely present. If that\u2019s the joke Brooker is making, it is an incredible accomplishment. If not, it\u2019s as underwhelming as the buttons companies keep experimenting with on boxer shorts. But whatever it is, it will continue to dominate news cycles for having the illusion of unusualness. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I, for one, cannot be bothered about how Stefan eventually fucks up his life. Our own lives are interactive and demanding at each turn. We can let films and zoos be then. I am more bothered about which bread I will buy tomorrow morning or is double-toned milk, even milk?
