I<\/span>\u2019d forgotten I own a VCD (remember those?) of 2004\u2019s heist-action-thriller <\/p>Dhoom<\/span><\/i>. It caught my eye while I was in the middle of my year-end cleaning <\/span>ritual<\/span><\/a> last week. Perched next to the equally dusty <\/span>Koi… Mil Gaya<\/span><\/i> and <\/span>Swades<\/span><\/i> VCDs, the film\u2019s cover stood out. As I peered at a fresh-faced Ali (Uday Chopra\u2019s character in the film), I realised that the <\/span>Dhoom <\/span><\/i>series remains the only taste of Bollywood success that ol\u2019 Udi Chops tasted. <\/span>\n\nThe first time I watched <\/span>Dhoom<\/span><\/i> was with a bunch of my Class VIII <\/span>classmates<\/span><\/a> in the <\/span>chhapri<\/span><\/a> matinee aisles of Chandan Cinema. Ali drew uproarious applause and whistles from said chhapris with his bantai lingo \u2013 \u201cExcuse me to please\u201d and \u201cAli toh say tum yeda hai\u201d. <\/span>Dhoom <\/span><\/i>was a hit but somehow the Chopra scion \u2013 Yash Chopra\u2019s son \u2013 couldn\u2019t quite lift the expectations we had thrust upon his brawny shoulders.<\/span>\n\nWhat possibly could have gone wrong? He had won the genetic <\/span>lottery<\/span><\/a>, was offered scripts on a silver platter, and when he made his debut, the family business was already in good hands with his elder brother and hater of public appearances, Aditya Chopra.<\/span>\n\n\"\"\n\nSome attribute Uday Chopra\u2019s below-average Bollywood success to his <\/span>sub-par acting<\/span><\/a>, others to his rough-around-the-edges looks, and some to his inability to work outside the Chopra clan. Despite making a dream debut in <\/span>Mohabbatein<\/span><\/i>, Chopra never fully seemed to find his footing in Bollywood. After a smattering of high-profile multi-starrers that did underwhelmingly at the box office, his solo hero turns in the spunky <\/span>Neal \u2019n\u2019 Nikki<\/span><\/i> and ambitious <\/span>Pyaar Impossible<\/span><\/i> were also poorly received.<\/span>\n

Chopra knows that everything in life is fleeting \u2013 success, loss, fame, notoriety.<\/blockquote>\nIn fact, in 2013, Uday had hinted that <\/span>Dhoom 3<\/span><\/i> might have been <\/span>his last hurrah<\/span><\/a> (he hasn\u2019t been seen on screen since), and that his acting career is behind him, choosing to focus on directing and producing instead. Which is great, and he seems to be doing amazingly for himself, with his recent <\/span>Emmy nomination<\/span><\/a>. But even if he does go on to reach the heights his father achieved, I believe Chopra\u2019s legacy will likely be something else: His staunch self-awareness. Chopra knows that everything in life is fleeting \u2013 success, loss, fame, notoriety. And the only way to avoid getting carried away by your <\/span>stardom<\/span><\/a> is to accept that one day it will all go away. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\n\nThe 46-year-old\u2019s interactions on Twitter aresn\u2019t just high AF \u2013 they are also the gold standard in <\/span>how to deal with trolls<\/span><\/a>. If you follow his Twitter timeline, you\u2019ll realise he isn\u2019t vile or nasty and that\u2019s probably because he <\/span>believes<\/span><\/a> \u201ctrolls are people too, they have a job to do and it\u2019s ok\u201d. <\/span>\n\n\"\"\n\nYet, Uday Chopra gets the short end of the stick as compared to his far-less accomplished peers like Tusshar Kapoor or Jackky Bhagnani. A darling of the so-called anti-<\/span>nepotism brigade<\/span><\/a>, his Twitter timeline is rife with unjustified remarks about his career, mindless <\/span>body-shaming<\/span><\/a>, and downright <\/span>insensitive criticism<\/span><\/a> about his love life. And some trolls are simply loathsome. Someone called him a prostitute to which a calm Chopra replied, \u201cThere\u2019s nothing wrong with being a prostitute. It\u2019s the oldest profession in the world.\u201d <\/span>\n\nBut trolls are impossible to get rid of. The joke on Uday Chopra is a timeless one and yet he takes it all with a pinch of salt. When recently asked, \u201cUday bhai, are u working on any films right now?\u201d, he responded with \u201c<\/span>Yes. It\u2019s called \u2018No film<\/span><\/a>\u2019\u201d directed by \u201cNo one will cast me\u201d produced by the famous \u201cI\u2019m not an actor.\u201d <\/span>\n\nMy personal favourite is when he responded to a troll asking him to \u201cbe useful in life\u201d with a deadpan, \u201cThat ship has sailed.\u201d Maybe this is the nihilist in me talking, but that\u2019s the most self-effacing I\u2019ve seen anyone from Bollywood be.<\/span>\n\n\"\"\n\nApart from the wit, it is Chopra\u2019s concerted support of causes he believes in \u2013 his <\/span>advocacy of legalising weed<\/span><\/a> and subsequent beef with Mumbai Police \u2013 that makes him stand out in a <\/span>politically correct Bollywood<\/span><\/a>. This, and his ability to just be himself. \u00a0<\/span>\n\nIn an industry where people are more plastic than flesh, it\u2019s no surprise that most have-beens tend to go a little overboard while holding on to what they consider \u201ctheir aura\u201d. Botched lip jobs, henna-coloured beards, forced flamboyance, and incessant selfies with more important stars, are proof. In the midst of this, we have Uday Chopra, as refreshing as a new day (NewDay Chopra?) \u2013 a man who spent 10 years of his life trying and failing as a leading Bollywood hero. Once a <\/span>mainstream<\/span><\/a> masala representation of six-pack abs, he\u2019s now <\/span>let himself breathe easy<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\n\nSo if Uday Chopra is to be believed that his acting career is truly over, I really hope he considers a career in educating Indian celebrities and offers a crash course in \u201cHow to not take your stardom so seriously 101.\u201d That\u2019s the one role he\u2019s really winning at.<\/span>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
