It\u2019s as if they exist to polarise the audience into declaring that \u201cthe book was better\u201d minutes into the film. The odds are, after all, stacked completely against them. To compress an average 700-page book, that emphasises world-building, has intermingling backstories and unending sub-plots into a two-hour film or a five-hour show, is a challenge many screenwriters are not equal to. Look at the Harry Potter <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/fantastic-beasts-the-crimes-of-grindelwald-review-politicians\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">franchise<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for instance. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year, a doughty Indian Netflix Original took a moonshot, and attempted to capture a beast of a critically acclaimed book in a web series\u2026 and didn\u2019t falter. The first season of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sacred Games<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (the second season has already been greenlit) that came out earlier this year managed to remind audiences about the beauty of book adaptations. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s been a year when the possibilities of the digital space exploded. Netflix took the lead with four Indian series \u2013 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sacred Games, Ghoul, Little Things, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Selection Day<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And Amazon followed with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breathe<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and \u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/amazon-prime-mirzapur-lynching-women-violence-masochism\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mirzapur<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. There was also the mockumentary, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Better Life Foundation<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, that returned with an impeccable second season. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sacred Games<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, helmed by directors Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane, stands out by a wide margin for recreating a spellbinding world that had audiences invested. Ask any bibliophile and they\u2019ll tell you the joy of visualising the world of their favourite books and the faces of the fictional characters \u2013 translating that to the screen is an exercise designed to falter. For people who hadn\u2019t yet read the novel, it introduced them to an universe where Sartaj Singh and Ganesh <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/teachers-day-sacred-gamed-ganesh-gaitonde\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gaitonde<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> co-exist. It pulled this off on a global scale that was not inferior to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Narcos<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Crown<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or even <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Break<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span>\n\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\"><p>It\u2019s been a year when the possibilities of the digital space exploded. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sacred Games<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> single-handedly ended the drought of smartly written and performed shows of Indian origin on the internet. It mastered the art of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/netflix-sacred-games-powder-crime-drama\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cliffhanger<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, gave us indelible <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/sacred-games-netflix-kanta-bai-shalini\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">characters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like Katekar, Bunty, Guruji, and Kukoo and didn\u2019t compromise on the filmmaking. It was that unicorn that treated the small screen with the same level of ambition and respect usually reserved for the silver one. And what worked in its favour is that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sacred Games<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> refused to just rely completely on its novel. Instead, it used the book as a stepping stone into a world that had the space to accommodate newer characters and plot twists. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just like the explosive <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ghoul<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sacred Games<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> didn\u2019t just get India right, but also concerned itself with sharp commentary on the state of India\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/sacred-games-netflix-saif-ali-khan-vikram-chandra\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">affairs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It refused to bow down to the diktats of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/sacred-games-online-censorship\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">censorship<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or the templates of safe storytelling. Instead, it packed itself with mythological references that feel wholly inventive \u2013 as international as they are Indian.
