The series, which streams on December 28, revolves around two teenage brothers from Madhya Pradesh who have been singularly raised by their authoritarian father into becoming cricketing prodigies. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like this year\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sacred Games<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that delved deep into Mumbai\u2019s underbelly of corrupt police officers, deviant babas, and all-powerful gangsters, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Selection Day<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> concerns itself with the city\u2019s other prime obsession: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/sports\/indian-cricket-gender-problem-mixed-games\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cricket<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That also means that the series \u2013 just like its predecessor \u2013 invariably is centred around a male-dominated universe. Its cast includes the two teenagers (Mohammad Samad and Yash Dholye), their nemesis (Karanvir Malhotra), their father (Rajesh Tailang), a disgraced cricket coach (Mahesh Manjrekar), a God (Shiv Pandit), and a young business tycoon (Akshay Oberoi). <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet Shah\u2019s Nellie stands out, and not merely because she is the only <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/feminism-female-sexism-misogyny\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">female character<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> supporting <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Selection Day\u2019s<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> universe. Her personality is one that Shah, an actor whose versatility far outpaces her roles, exploits to the hilt. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In one of her introduction scenes, a middle-aged Nellie rolls a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/culture\/marijuana-legalisation-march-mumbai\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">marijuana joint<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, unanimously considered a largely male addiction in Indian cinema \u2013 unless the intention is to signal a young, sexually permissive, \u201cwoke\u201d female character. In another, she delivers the tart, \u201cNormally, I\u2019d welcome this attention by a man half my age still in possession of his own hair\u201d to one of the male leads in such trademark Pathak Shah style, that it is bound to induce a cackle. Nellie is no cardboard grieving widow: She is a loyal friend, a strong-willed headmistress who also teaches science to a class of enthusiastic students, and talks to the statue of her dead husband (in an obvious harkback to her scene-stealing turn in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jaane Tu\u2026 Ya Jaane Na<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span>\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\">Her personality is one that Shah, an actor whose versatility far outpaces her roles, exploits to the hilt.<\/blockquote>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, even a veteran like Pathak Shah, whose reputation alone merits such well-rounded characters is acutely aware that Nellie is an exception. \u201cAt the same age, my <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/modern-family\/still-a-girl-the-side-of-our-mothers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mother<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (actor Dina Pathak) wasn\u2019t getting the kind of roles that I am getting today. The poor woman played Hindi movie moms all her life,\u201d she tells me during the course of a meeting. By her own admission, she was instantly attracted to how \u201csmartly written\u201d her character was in the show, \u201cIt\u2019s fantastic considering the age I am.\u201d Yet Pathak Shah, who made her foray into Netflix with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Love Per Square Foot<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">playing Blossom, a widowed Christian mother, is synonymous with layered, evocative performances that acquire a fandom of their own. Just in the last two years, Pathak Shah boasts of more envious acting resume than any of her younger peers. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Love Per Square Foot<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, she is a hoot as the mother who reluctantly agrees to her daughter\u2019s decision to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/technology-love-sex-relationships-procreation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">marry<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a Hindu man, parading her impeccable comic timing. In last year\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lipstick Under My Burkha<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Pathak Shah delivered the year\u2019s finest performance (and Hindi cinema\u2019s unforgettable orgasm moment) as \u201cBuaji\u201d, a middle-aged spinster in the throes of her sexual awakening. A few months after that, she was on stage for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Father<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, that had a month-long run at two of Mumbai\u2019s premier venues. In the play \u2013 a portrait of a mind held hostage by illness \u2013 Pathak Shah played Naseeruddin Shah\u2019s daughter with such conviction that you forgot that he\u2019s her husband. And then, she also reprised her career-defining performance as Maya Sarabhai, the snooty mother-in-law in the second season of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sarabhai vs Sarabhai<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A fiercely opinionated actress, Pathak Shah is known to not mince her words, whether it was while <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiatoday.in\/movies\/bollywood\/story\/ratna-pathak-shah-tears-into-rohit-shetty-golmaal-3-was-meant-to-be-funny-it-was-not-1349915-2018-09-26\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">panning<\/span><\/a> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Golmaal 3<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 a film she starred in \u2013 or when she admits to me that writing roles for women is generally a difficult task for Indian writers, \u201cOur standard is the male experience. The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">female experience has never been a part of the national discourse\u201d she reasons. She attributes the recent wave of nuanced older female characters in an industry afflicted with ageism to the new crop of writers as well as changing tastes of the audience. \u201cFemale characters are slowly becoming individuals rather than being <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/get-out-everyday-indian-racism\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stereotypes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Seema Pahwa has done such wonderful parts as have Supriya Pathak and Neena Gupta. We\u2019re all approximately the same age and all of us are getting much more interesting parts than we\u2019d do usually.\u201d<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pathak Shah, one of the industry\u2019s rare medium-agnostic actors, is partly right. This year alone, Bollywood witnessed a resurgence of roles and extended screen time for older women actors. There was Manisha Koirala playing the disgruntled housewife in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lust Stories<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; the memorable Yamini Das who gave a face to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/sui-dhaaga-review\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">emotional<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> burden of small-town married women in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sui Dhaaga<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; Shefali Shah romancing in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once Again<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; Tabu\u2019s unforgettable turn as the femme fatale in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Andhadhun<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; Gitanjali Rao\u2019s grieving mother in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">October<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and Neena Gupta\u2019s tender portrayal of a middle-aged mother battling a late pregnancy in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Badhaai Ho<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span>\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\">She attributes the recent wave of nuanced older female characters in an industry afflicted with ageism to the new crop of writers as well as changing tastes of the audience.<\/blockquote>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet, in a year that has also produced 110 films, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/delhi-belly-black-comedy-akshat-verma-diarrhetic-plotline\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">representation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of older women actors ends up accounting for a paltry 9.9 per cent. It hardly offers a cause to celebrate. The scenario isn\u2019t any better in the digital space, which, unlike films, isn\u2019t driven by commercial box-office limitations. Even then, some of the year\u2019s most popular Indian web shows <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013<\/span> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sacred Games, Mirzapur, Little Things, Ghoul<\/span><\/i> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 hardly have had older women in substantial roles.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I ask Pathak Shah this question that I assume she must have already asked herself, she remains <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/commodification-social-media-brand\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">optimistic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But it comes with a caveat, \u201cThe way in which women characters are written in the future will likely improve provided we are not forced back into the medieval age socially. India seems ready to do that also. Toh kya malum? Kal main ghunghat odh ke ghar mein baithi hungi.\u201d Nope.
