Usually featuring a Santa or Banta Singh, these derivative jokes have been an essential component of Indian humour, perpetuating a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/3-storeys-how-to-break-the-bollywood-mom-sterotype\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stereotype<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that having a turban over one\u2019s head guarantees a lower IQ. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While I grew up bombarded with jokes at the expense of an entire <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/people\/mumbai-chawls-community-toilets-facebook-timeline\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">community<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Anand Patwardhan\u2019s 1990 documentary <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Memory Of Friends<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> made me realise that the alienation and othering of Sikhs reached alarming levels during the \u201980s. In the events following the fateful days of November 1984, the atmosphere had grown so vitriolic that many Sikhs declared that they did not owe any allegiance to the tricolour, and that the only path towards salvation could be if a separate Sikh state came into existence. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/amazon-prime-mirzapur-lynching-women-violence-masochism\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">violence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which engulfed Punjab during the \u201980s seems to be a thing of the past, the fact that Sikhs continue to be singled out in India today with the same treatment as blonde women in American humour, speaks a thousand words. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cases related to the mass killings of Sikhs (the official body count crosses 3,000) in 1984 are still being heard in court at present, 35 years after the incidents. It was only yesterday that Sajjan Kumar, a longstanding <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/politics\/the-dirty-water-theory-government-congress-bjp\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Congress<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> leader who would go on to become a Member of Parliament in 1991 and 2004, was convicted by the Delhi High Court for his involvement in the murder of five people in the pogrom. Meanwhile, Kamal Nath, another Congress bigwig reported to have played a crucial role in the killings, was just appointed Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh. \u00a0<\/span>\n\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\"><p>Cases related to the mass killings of Sikhs (the official body count crosses 3,000) in 1984 are still being heard in court at present, 35 years after the incidents.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the old wounds of 1984 are reopened by the blade of memory, watching <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Memory Of Friends<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sheds light on how we\u2019re still feeling the fallout, even today. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/people\/sindhi-india-pakistan-partition-sindh-ramesh-sippy-sindhi-language\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hatred<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Sikhs gained prominence again when an Akali Dal MLA from Delhi Manjinder Singh Sirsa <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=arGPxwEtLR0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">attacked<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the men guilty of murdering two Sikh men during the violence, after they allegedly raised slogans promising a repeat of the horrors of 1984. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Patwardhan\u2019s documentary, young Sikh boys and men see revenge and an independent Khalistan as the only way towards <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/politics\/sajjan-kumar-delhi-high-court-1984\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">justice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and salvation. The ones belonging to radical Khalistani outfits talk about how every Hindu in Punjab is an enemy of the Sikhs, and how very few Hindus helped out Sikh families during the pogrom. On the other hand, radical Hindus belonging to the Shiv Sena refuse to admit that they are the ones responsible for starting any violence, laying the blame squarely on their Sikh counterparts.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The actions of the radical men inebriated by religious extremism is juxtaposed against well-intentioned communist outfits which see the happenings in Punjab as a capitalist ploy to divide <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/indian-lifts-elevator-neighbours-society-culture-stories\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">society<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a blatant attempt at derailing Karl Marx\u2019s vision, where every poor worker is class conscious. They tour villages across the state, singing songs and staging plays about Hindu-Sikh unity, with the hope that good sense will eventually prevail.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The actions of the communist well-wishers in the documentary are similar to the ones who are marching barefoot to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/delhi-inhabitants-air-quality-pollution-diwali\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Delhi<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Mumbai today, with the hope that someone will listen. Far away from and uninspired by the rabid cries of the likes of Yogi Adityanath and Akbaruddin Owaisi, the protesting farmers hope that the Parliament will <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/scroll.in\/article\/904100\/parliament-must-debate-farm-crisis-not-ram-temple-say-farmers-marching-in-delhi\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">debate important issues<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like the farm crisis, and not whether a temple should be built in Ayodhya.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\"><p>The question of what motivates an individual so drugged by religious identities that he is willing to justify killing innocents is one that remains urgently relevant in today\u2019s India.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though the actors in this conflict may be divided by faith and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/satire\/kanye-west-tweets-social-media\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">philosophy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Bhagat Singh is the one individual who unites them all \u2013 from the Khalistani extremist who is willing to kill a fellow Sikh who is caught drinking or smoking, to the communist who continues to wear the turban despite vouching for an ideology which believes religion is nothing but the opiate of the masses. It reminds us that not much is different from today\u2019s India when everyone from the CPI\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=YT17NsoUC1s\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kanhaiya Kumar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the BJP\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ndtv.com\/india-news\/martyrs-day-narendra-modi-pays-tribute-to-bhagat-singh-rajguru-sukhdev-1827660\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Narendra Modi <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">believes that the man who died almost 80 years ago still has something to offer contemporary India. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patwardhan\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Memory of Friends<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> gains more import when you realise that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/womens-day-body-shaming-bollywood\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indian cinema<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hasn\u2019t dealt with what happened in Punjab during the 1980s as much as it probably should have. The films which gained some recognition are Shonali Bose\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amu<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2005) and Gurvinder Singh\u2019s Punjabi feature <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chauthi Koot<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2015). <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The question of what motivates an individual so drugged by religious identities that he is willing to justify killing innocents is one that remains urgently relevant in today\u2019s India. And by giving voice to the stakeholders who are impacted by the violence, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Memory of Friends <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serves as a cautionary study in understanding how peace can be hijacked in the name of religion in the world\u2019s largest <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/politics\/urban-naxals-anti-nationals-vivek-agnihotri-democratic-values\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">democracy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Anand Patwardhan\u2019s 1990 documentary In Memory Of Friends made me realise that the alienation and othering of Sikhs reached alarming levels during the \u201980s.
