No, I wouldn\u2019t risk going to a multiplex, standing up for the national anthem and then sitting for a film where Aayush Sharma \u2013 Bollywood\u2019s latest nepotistic offering \u2013 is fondly called \u201cSusu\u201d. And has to travel abroad to win his love by displaying his <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/gujarat-family-festivals-garba-religion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">garba <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">skills. But I do have an Amazon Prime subscription and suffer from morbid curiosity. I couldn\u2019t stop wondering if Aayush Sharma would be better than Atul Agnihotri, Salman Khan\u2019s other brother-in-law and charity subject. Remember the \u201990s hustler who was recognisable by his wooden cuteness and for being a part of several Hindi film outings like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sir<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Krantiveer<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Veergati<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aatish<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I didn\u2019t have to wait long to have my answer: Aayush Sharma easily left behind <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/series\/fitoor-mishra\/fitoor-mishra-commentarre-tiger-zinda-hai-salman-khan-katrina-kaif-ek-tha-tiger\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Katrina <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kaif and Amy Jackson in moonlighting as a statue<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loveyatri<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had all the makings of a guilty pleasure; it proudly over-abuses all \u201990s film tropes. What it was missing was a stock \u201990s hero \u2013 someone who was a non-Khan, non-Dutt, non-Kumar and had the inherent talent of hamming. That \u201990s hero who could champion patriarchy while celebrating matriarchy; could flex muscles as well as emotions; and become taller, sharper and stronger as the narrative progressed. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Someone who was part of what I like to call, \u201cThe Face Pack\u201d. As opposed to the legendary Brat Pack of \u201980s Hollywood, members of the Face Pack were used on a dried and dead script to make it rise up like a zombie. This tribe of heroes, who were neither known for their brains nor their brawn but were an essential part of \u201990s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/despite-bollywood-influences-i-am-raising-two-feminist-sons-heres-how-to-do-it\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bollywood<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is now lost. The films they were part of, the songs they lip-synced, have all achieved cult status, but sadly they haven&#8217;t. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allow me to introduce you to the honorary members of the Face Pack: Avinash Wadhawan, Kamal Sadanah, Jay Mehta, Sumeet Saigal, Vicky Arora, Vivek Mushran, Ayub Khan, Asif Sheikh, and Rahul Roy. They are all Sharmaji ke bete. Basically people who managed to score well during an entrance <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/results-ssc-hsc-exam-stress\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exam<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, got into a reputed college, managed to get placement but suddenly during appraisal season, they were not deemed worthy anymore. It makes you wonder how the likes of Harman Baweja, Tusshar Kapoor, Jackky Bhagnani, or even Sohail Khan continue having any semblance of a career.<\/span>\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\">It\u2019s a strange coincidence but the songs were always the USP of all the movies with the the members of the Face Pack.<\/blockquote>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My fascination with the Face Pack started as a kid. The boom of cable TV was yet to reach my neighbourhood and of course there was no Netflix and chill \u2014 it was all Doordarshan and Avtar Gill. And over several late Friday and Saturday night film viewings, I got acquainted with a number of them. I never judged them because I was one of those people who could watch anything that came on TV. It was only when I grew up that I managed to learn that my beloved Face Pack was essentially a group of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/grub\/restaurants-pubs-caste-system-india\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">outcasts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first Face Pack member who made a solid impression on me was Asif Sheikh. You know, the guy who played Thakur Suraj Singh from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Karan-Arjun<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? Although, his claim to fame was actually the chartbuster song <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bin Tere Sanam <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yaara Dildara<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1991), which probably boosted <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/outdoors\/car-dj-road-trip-friends\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DJ <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suketu&#8217;s career when he remixed it more than Sheikh\u2019s career.<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Yaara Dildara<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1991) made an attempt to make a chocolate boy out of him, but films like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pyaar Ka Saudagar<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1991) and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Haque <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(1991) proved that he was destined to become Dustin Hoffman from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Graduate<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It more or less ended his career and he had to do damage control by playing farcical villains and ultimately fading into oblivion. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I can write a paean to the Sakht Launda of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/bollywood-2017-nostalgia-90s-comeback\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">90s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Puru Rajkumar from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bal Brahmachari <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(1996), which was made to shame incels. While the film found its way to the canon of cult, Puru did not. He was abandoned, occasionally making thankless appearances in forgettable films like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mission Kashmir<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2000), <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LOC: Kargil <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2003)<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Veer <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2010). And to think that he was a star kid. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But even greater was Jay Mehta, who made a decent debut with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muskurahat <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(1991), but then ended up as the only superhero who could easily repel all possible emotions and expressions thrown at him. But the holy grail of the Face Pack has to be Vicky Arora. No one had any idea where he came from or how he managed to be in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yalgaar <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(1992) and got Sanjay Dutt to accept a supporting role in the film. Sadly, Vicky Arora\u2019s career was the same as PM <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/donald-trump-narendra-modi-india-usa\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Modi <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spending time in India between his foreign trips: There for five minutes, but vanishing right after.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then there is Bijay Anand \u2013 recently seen in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Karenjit Kaur <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/sunny-leone-arbaaz-khan-taboo-tera-intezar-bollywood-movies-2017\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sunny Leone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;s father \u2013 whose filmography was inimitable in the \u201990s: Kajol&#8217;s philandering boyfriend in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pyar To Hona Hi Tha<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after defying gravity and expectations in the song \u201cSubha Subha Jab Khidki Khole\u201d from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yash<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a strange coincidence but the songs were always the USP of all the movies with the the members of the Face Pack. You may not remember that Avinash Wadhawan was in<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Meera Ka Mohan<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1992), but I can bet \u201cKrishna O Krishna\u201d will sound familiar when you hear it. Ditto with Sumeet Saigal in \u201cKali Teri Choti Hai Paranda Tera Laal Ni\u201d from<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Bahaar Aane Taak <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(1995). It\u2019s probably the only song in the history of Bollywood where the background dancers were more enthusiastic than the leads. My favourite, however was \u201cChicken Fry\u201d from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rock Dancer<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1995). Believe it or not, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/achche-din-fanney-khan-gets-a-new-lyricist-the-bjp\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">song <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">actually tried to challenge the norms of objectification: Kamal Sadanah and Ritu Shivpuri adoringly address each other using names of different food items. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though I thoroughly enjoyed the antics of the Face Pack, they failed to capture India\u2019s attention like they managed to capture mine. Maybe they were not able to fit in anymore, they didn\u2019t have a Morpheus to guide their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=carrer+arre&#038;oq=carrer+arre&#038;aqs=chrome..69i57j0l5.2412j0j4&#038;sourceid=chrome&#038;ie=UTF-8\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">careers <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or Agent Smith from the Department of Obliteration jinxed their fate by closing in on them. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But I\u2019ll continue to be grateful to them and maybe, even slightly nostalgic. Today, they might be dissed and dismissed. But they were also the ones responsible for colouring up the era with their 50 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/cyber\/50-shades-blue-whale-challenge-suicide-russia\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shades <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of hamming, if not with their films.<\/span>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While watching Aayush Sharma in Loveyatri, I was reminded of the stock \u201990s hero \u2013 someone who had the inherent talent of hamming and could champion patriarchy while celebrating matriarchy;
