And my maa\u2019s first words right after were, \u201cStay away from boys\u201d. Wise words, really, but the irony did not escape me. Freedom didn\u2019t feel quite like it should have. <\/span>\n \n <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three years later, I missed my cycle and no boy was involved. \u201cYou probably haven\u2019t been eating right,\u201d my aunt reasoned. And so, as the case of the missing period continued with an occasional stop, the reasoning continued too, \u201cYou need to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/yoga-exercise-workout\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">workout<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d, \u201cYou don\u2019t sleep at the right hour\u201d, \u201cYou don\u2019t listen to us.\u201d I was one missing period away from, \u201cIt\u2019s because you\u2019re on your phone 24\/7!\u201d<\/span>\n \n <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I wasn\u2019t the one complaining. In fact, I was rather elated at escaping the cramps, although my steadily growing weight was a cause for concern. The breakouts were brushed off as a phase every growing teenager had to go through. But when I finally missed my period four months in a row, maa insisted I visit a doctor. Fear-stricken that I might be defected<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beyond my <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/first-person\/fat-shaming-trauma-body-positivity-weight-loss-motivation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and ugly acne marks, I refused. <\/span>\n \n <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stubbornness pushed me through school and junior college with lots of missed cycles, excruciating pain, and unsupervised over-the-counter medicines. (Today, I\u2019m older and I\u2019d like to believe a little wiser, so don\u2019t do drugs, kids.) My <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/growing-up-ugly-body-positivity\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">self-esteem<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had taken a major hit by then as I had thick and visible facial hair. I caught the attention of the boys \u2013 just not the way I\u2019d have liked it. Every \u201cHey, want my razor? You seem to need it more than I do\u201d was countered with a \u201cThat\u2019s cause you\u2019re not man enough\u201d. My defence mechanism had macho-ed; my reliance on self-deprecating jokes reached a new pinnacle.<\/span>\n <blockquote class=\"quote--center\">Fear-stricken that I might be defected beyond my fat and ugly acne marks, I refused.<\/blockquote>\n <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Five years and an accidental eavesdrop by a professor later, I heard the term PCOS. \u00a0Hearing me rant to my roommates while away on a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/first-day-college-expectations-reality\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">college<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> trip about how my period left me spotting <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">again<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, another pretty underwear ruined, she politely intervened. While she explained about cysts <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on ovaries<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, my mind provided an unhelpful, \u201cTHAT SOUNDS UGLY. I AM DYING. THIS IS IT.\u201d <\/span>\n \n <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was only when the professor mentioned that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">she<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and listed her <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/well.blogs.nytimes.com\/2014\/11\/24\/pcos-an-infertility-issue-that-is-little-understood\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">symptoms which coincided with <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, I was relieved for a moment. The epitaph on my gravestone wouldn\u2019t read, \u201cToo young to die.\u201d But in no time I was blaming myself \u2013 my weight and my love for all foods fatty \u2013 until a tall and lean classmate admitted to having PCOS. Next I did what any millennial would do but what the doctor wouldn\u2019t recommend: I Wikipedia\u2019d the fuck out of the disorder. I read through infertility, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/health\/depression-happiness-relationships-love\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">depression<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, anxiety, and logged off right at cancer. <\/span>\n \n <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeling heavy and shaken like most people have after watching the Ambanis dance at Isha\u2019s sangeet, I booked my first-ever appointment with a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/gynaecologists-india-sex-education-sex-polycystic-ovarian-syndrome\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gynaecologist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 19 years. I was five years too late; nervous and embarrassed for delaying this visit. After confirming I had PCOS, the gynaec chided my maa and me for being irresponsible. She put me on a list of prescribed meds and I figured I could have done well without all that anxiety had I just visited her years ago. <\/span>\n \n <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, I figured I\u2019d be okay: I had taken the first, significant step and walked out of the clinic all confident. I had PCOS and I was going to beat it. I wasn\u2019t the one to be blamed, my <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/love-and-sex\/teenager-relationships-sneaking-in-girlfriends-house\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hormones<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were. And hey, I wasn\u2019t going to die.<\/span>\n <blockquote class=\"quote--center\">While she explained about cysts on ovaries, my mind provided an unhelpful, \u201cTHAT SOUNDS UGLY. I AM DYING. THIS IS IT.\u201d<\/blockquote>\n <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But my problems were far from over. Although worried, maa was embarrassed to let others know about my disorder, ultimately asking me not to speak about it. What if people thought I was infertile? Or believed I had some \u201cstrange disease\u201d? My PCOS was treated as a curse word \u2013 never to be uttered. And like my period, it was to be a closely guarded <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/love-and-sex\/sex-tinder-india-open-marriage-open-relationship-dating\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">secret<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span>\n \n <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So when a guy friend would laugh after seeing how miserable I looked as my cramps hit me, calling me fragile, I would awkwardly tell him to fuck off. And when a class debate ensued on menstrual leave at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/intern-office-workplace-rules-no-one-tells-you\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">workplace<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, I realised the male professor was clueless about PCOS. As I began to explain, I was immediately shut off. The next day, he sympathetically told me how I should focus on \u201cgetting better instead of discussing a personal issue so publicly.\u201d I had no right to make others uncomfortable. <\/span>\n \n <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And as dejected and alone it made me feel at times, I am <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bothered by the the lack of awareness about the disorder. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PCOS is a genetic disorder that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">affects <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyo.in\/variety\/polycystic-ovary-syndrome-womens-health\/story\/1\/16785.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one in 10 Indian women<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. How many girls like me let it go undetected for years without seeking medical help? How many <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/modern-family\/cancer-chennai-india-whatsapp-mamas-baby-in-sickness-and-in-health\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mamas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were asking their girls to not speak about it to anyone? <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s when I decided to speak <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">about it, as frequently and loudly as possible to anyone willing to listen. <\/span>\n <blockquote class=\"quote--center\">What if people thought I was infertile? Or believed I had some \u201cstrange disease\u201d?<\/blockquote>\n <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeling responsible and possibly a little heroic, I read extensively \u2013 about the fact that PCOS does not equal infertility and not everyone with PCOS has cysts on their ovaries and that two women may have different symptoms. I told off the guy friend who\u2019d called me fragile because I was cramping, and asked him to Google something for a change. And what if I couldn\u2019t stand on the classroom podium and speak about it, I\u2019d talk about it to my classmates anyway, many of whom I knew got severe cramps. I convinced a few friends to see the gynaec. This was my own little <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/good-girls-indian-parenting\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">revolution<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span>\n \n <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So when <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/sara-ali-khan-nepotism-koffee-with-karan-star-kids\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sara Ali Khan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> spoke about PCOS on a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Koffee with Karan<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> episode, I screamed, \u201cGo girl\u201d. After she spoke about her battle with weight and the disorder sitting comfortably next to her father, no one really applauded, but media publications wrote about it. And for that she\u2019s a hero. Because PCOS needs to be spoken about and it could definitely do with some publicity. <\/span>\n \n <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve got to keep the word going around.
