Here\u2019s How To Do It"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\u00a0\n<p><span class=\"dropcap\">I<\/span>was aloof to <\/p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/tanushree-dutta-nana-patekar-sexual-harassment-denial\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bollywood<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for a large part of my life. And I definitely wasn\u2019t one of those who drooled over SRK\u2019s \u201cPalat\u201d in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or Salman Khan\u2019s towel dance from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. On the odd occasion that I did catch a Hindi film, I wouldn\u2019t be too bothered by much of what I saw on screen. Dumb storyline? Meh. Vulgar dance and filthy lyrics? It\u2019s time to zone out. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/arre-checklist-humans-of-housing-society\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Misogynistic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> plots and jokes? Tsk, it\u2019s just a movie innit? <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then I became a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/modern-family\/mother-daughter-friendship-father-death\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mother<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. To two boys. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If there\u2019s something you learn as an Indian mother who wants to raise fiercely <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/fairy-tales-indian-feminist\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">feminist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sons, it\u2019s that Bollywood and its portrayal of toxic masculinity will do everything in its power to stop you from doing so. There\u2019s no way I could be indifferent to either the brazen or the subliminal messages floating around in almost every Hindi film which my sons would be watching too.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It all started with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">English Vinglish<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a film that I liked and asked my boys to watch when it came on TV on a Sunday afternoon. I have to admit, getting them to watch it came with unexpected benefits: It reminded and guilted them into thinking about all the times they were mean to me. And resulted in week-long exemplary obedient behaviour that would make any mother teary-eyed. Moreover, it also introduced them to the idea of being gay and to unrequited love and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/love-and-sex\/love-break-up-friends-relationships\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heartbreaks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And at the tender ages of seven and nine, they didn\u2019t shy away from having an involved discussion with me on these topics. <\/span>\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\">If there\u2019s something you learn as an Indian mother who wants to raise fiercely feminist sons, it\u2019s that Bollywood and its portrayal of toxic masculinity will do everything in its power to stop you from doing so.<\/blockquote>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From then on, watching Hindi films became the preferred past time for my sons. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> became our weekend go-to film and they learnt the significance of friendships. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dangal<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/tax-de-india-returns-filing-srk-chak-de\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chak De! India<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> could keep them glued for hours and inspired for weeks. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hera Pheri<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> would have us all in splits together. And the little bit of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Highway<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that they saw on TV left them mortally afraid of kidnappers that since then, they don\u2019t leave my hand and run away in public places. Ten points to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Highway<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for that. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But it\u2019s only gone downhill since then. As I soon learnt, finding a film devoid of misogyny, objectification of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/metoo-women-refuse-to-believe-other-women\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">women<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, insensitivity, and double-meaning innuendo was easier said than done. How am I supposed to raise feminist sons when they\u2019re freely exposed to Bollywood? How do I explain to my kids what is wrong with \u201c6 din, Ladki in\u201d when SRK is mouthing it as if it\u2019s the most chivalrous way to woo a girl in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kal Ho Naa Ho<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? And what if my impressionable kids decide to pretend to be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/alauddin-khilji-padmaavat-homosexuality-malik-kafur\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gay<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> just so they can become roommates with a desi girl and swoop her off her feet, a la <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dostana<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? Cut a girl some slack, Bollywood, I\u2019m trying hard here! \u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not like even the most well-meaning <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/disabled-protagonists-bollywood-films\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hindi films<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> come with a disclaimer for their problematic portrayals.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For instance, I took my boys out to watch <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jagga Jasoos<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because I\u2019d thought that it\u2019d be a kid-friendly film. And it was so much fun until Ranbir Kapoor tried kissing a half-asleep Katrina Kaif. I almost choked on my popcorn and instantly whispered right there in the theatre that one must \u201cnever\u201d kiss a girl without her \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/indian-men-enthusiastic-consent\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">consent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d and especially not when she is asleep. To drive my point across, I also added for good measure that it\u2019s something that people can go to jail for. Thankfully, they understood but ended up asking if it was so wrong, why was a theatre full of \u201cgrown ups\u201d heartily laughing at it. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I wish I had an answer or that it stopped there.<\/span>\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\">It\u2019s not like even the most well-meaning Hindi films come with a disclaimer for their problematic portrayals.<\/blockquote>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the process of watching films through the eyes of my two sons, I have stopped enjoying films that I\u2019d liked myself. Watching <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sholay<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> entailed having to admit to my kids that Dharmendra was indeed feeling Hema Malini up and not actually teaching her how to aim a gun or shoot. And as much as I loved the frothy <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jo Jeeta Wahi Sikander<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, I realised that I had totally forgotten how the film normalised <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/sara-tendulkar-stalking-case-celebrity-children\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">creepy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, vomit-inducing weirdos who ogle at girls as if it\u2019s their fundamental right. My kids looked puzzled by the leering Pooja Bedi was gifted in her entry scene. Safe to say, it didn\u2019t go very well. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, it dawned on me: Maybe I should try some of the classics that were superhits when my parents were young. But mentally going over their storylines, I quickly got over that delusion. In most of the films of the \u201980s, the dolled up <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/bollywood-sexual-harassment-alok-nath-nana-patekar\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heroine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> existed to choose between a hero (think BA pass or poor, clerk) and a villain (rich, smuggler, or sexual predator), and marrying one of them was her only life goal. Forget my kids, I couldn\u2019t have sat through that crap today. Even worse were the mandatory <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/nirbhaya-case-verdict-supreme-court-rape-in-india-rape-culture-rape-survivor-bulandshahr-gang-rape\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rape<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> scene in so many of these films where the hero would woo the helpless heroine by saving her from being inevitable assault from the villain. Yeah, I couldn\u2019t subject my unsuspecting innocent children to that meant-to-titillate garbage.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After months of watching movies while annoying my kids by giving them a simultaneous lecture on respecting women and basic human decency, it hit me. If I continue letting my sons consume Hindi film <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/melania-trump-wednesday-wisdom-donald-trump-usa\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wisdom<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there will be no way they won\u2019t believe that stalking is courtship, women are props, and that the true marker of manhood is assuming that a \u201cno\u201d means \u201cyes\u201d. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I had no other choice but to accept defeat. And then I stumbled upon <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baahubali<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Who would have thought that it would be this film that would effortlessly show them that tough, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/male-body-objectification-bollywood\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">muscular men<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> could be full of love and care, that women could kick ass, and that even breastfeeding women with babies on their arms can wield a knife?
