Previously, this kind of dedication to set an alarm for 5 am, only to sit in front of the TV set on a working day, had been reserved for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/sports\/women-cricketers-gender-pay-gap-bcci\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">men\u2019s cricket<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> team, when they toured Australia, New Zealand, and the West Indies. But with an impressive run in the tournament, the Women in Blue had made it to the semi-finals and the country was rallying behind them. <\/span>\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/sports\/indian-cricket-gender-problem-mixed-games\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mithali Raj<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> wasn\u2019t trending because she had scored a hundred, dropped a sitter, or changed the course of the game in any way. In fact, the game hadn\u2019t even begun, merely a coin had been flipped. The reason everyone was talking about Raj, was because the experienced veteran had been left out of the squad in a crunch knockout game. \u201cWhy is Mithali Raj not in the team?\u201d \u201cHow can you leave your best <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/sports\/cricket-england-australia-bowling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">batsman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> out,\u201d fans outraged online. \u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And all that ranting wasn\u2019t for nothing \u2013 the Indian batting line-up collapsed from 89-3 to 112 all out. A strong <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/scroll.in\/field\/903669\/numbers-game-mithali-raj-does-struggle-in-t20is-but-there-is-still-a-place-for-her-in-indias-squad\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">case<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> could be made that the calming and assured presence of Mithali Raj at the top could have made all the difference in a pressure game, a role played by Meg Lanning in Australia\u2019s title victory. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/sports\/harmanpreet-kaur-india-women-world-cup-t20-england\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harmanpreet Kaur<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was questioned, first by angry fans on Twitter, and then by the media in the post-match press conference. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And that, is a good thing. This <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/india-pakistan-asia-cup-2018-cricket\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">outrage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, this demand for accountability, this questioning of the Captain\u2019s decisions, this discussion over petty politics in the sport, is a good thing. This churn is a good thing. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\">The fallout between the coach, selectors, and former captain is playing out in the open, and fans are following it keenly.<\/blockquote>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After all, it is the constant questioning, criticism, and scrutiny that has powered the men\u2019s team to a formidable position in world <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/sports\/india-vs-england-test-cricket-series\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cricket<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and it is only healthy that the women\u2019s game is put through a similar test. They say you can tell a lot about a person based on the questions they ask, and as a cricket-crazy nation, we have started asking the right questions when it comes to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/sports\/mithali-raj-indian-women-cricket-punam-raut-virat-kohli\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">women\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cricket. Questions about cricket, and not about the women. Gone are the days of relative ignorance \u2013 asking which channel would air the match, whether the rules of the game were the same, whether the boundary was shorter, what is the name of the opening batswoman, or what tournament were they playing. Our knowledge of the game and the players has evolved. With the exploits of stalwarts such as Anjum Chopra, Mithali Raj, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/doodle\/jhulan-goswami-indian-cricket-womens-cricket-world-record\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jhulan Goswami<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and popularity of young guns like Smriti Mandhana and Deepti Sharma in the shorter formats, the interest in the women\u2019s game has peaked.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mithali Raj\u2019s controversial exclusion from the squad has now been discussed for almost a week, with more fervour since her letter to the BCCI became public. In fact, when I wrote <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ArreIndia\/posts\/2215529052036632?__xts__[0]=68.ARB2l6lw9UaQvi_Lvqd4gEBKv-edb050RqYHKPU30aYTLaLm7BBF3jXo7jh4LN6FOZR2pc30Id-U--3tASh3iyFFbhTRxVuglYzSffJ_PvwCvUkU3Mc33ZEpqyVedGtOfNwSG1TqwA9UwN1DDHKmCpzXcB6KlpI8cGe51R4c0wZ6kVjFtqDA779LTg6lXgomgKFiVqx2lUNR-809kKy8ylsok1RpZKhKj8_sYEIdlmqKIumv8WZ6xBG3xlLORSkEk0fQnhOBPEd1TTRyvBX93LzgnV2v4qmFicFfb5cBSM0N77XNUKYlgg6W-QAhGa7CPl_nxw&#038;__tn__=-UC-R\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a piece<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> earlier this week, defending Harmanpreet\u2019s decision to drop Mithali Raj, Facebook commenters put up a spirited, well-argued defence for Raj. One said: \u201cLet\u2019s stop being patronising. All the girls have ever asked for is to be looked through the same lens as men. This was not bold, this was harakiri. Leaving out your most experienced batter who was better equipped to handle the changes in conditions, 4 semis? Also what\u2019s with the persistence with Reddy, when Mansi Joshi in her only outing clearly proved far superior?&#8230; Leaving out Mithali Raj is much worse than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/sports\/cricket-eden-gardens-test-match-innings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ganguly\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> decision to field at the 2003 World Cup Final. Imagine <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/sports\/ms-dhoni-t20-indian-cricket-team-farewell-bcci\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dhoni<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had dropped Tendulkar @ 2011 world cup final &#038; India had lost. He would have been ripped to shreds. So shouldn&#8217;t Harmanpreet be criticised in the true spirit of the game?\u201d <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This, right here, is a good thing. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fallout between the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/sports\/ramesh-powar-womens-coach-mithali-raj\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coach<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, selectors, and former captain is playing out in the open, and fans are following it keenly. But as we already know about cricket in India, with great love comes even greater scrutiny. The questions have advanced from who and what to why. Why did Harmanpreet Kaur decide to bat first in overcast conditions? Why is Mithali Raj playing in the middle order and not at the top? Why didn\u2019t we go with an extra spinner on this wicket? Why did Smriti Mandhana play a rash shot at that moment in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/sports\/how-to-make-womens-cricket-great-again-ipl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">game<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? Why did Poonam Yadav not bowl that all-important over? <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fans have started treating the women\u2019s team with the same yardstick as the men\u2019s \u2013 putting incredible pressure and raising fingers in case of failure. As expectations grow, they are no longer treated with kids\u2019 gloves. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hopefully, some day we will cheer for Harmanpreet as loudly as we cheer for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/sports\/virat-kohli-indian-cricket-team-india-pakistan-anushka-sharma-arnab-goswami\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Virat Kohli<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Like Kohli, we expect Kaur to give us a win every single time. And when they falter we boo them. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a burden that comes with playing cricket for India, and it is something that the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/sports\/virat-kohli-icc-award-south-africa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">men\u2019s team<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been enduring for as long as we can remember. Today, the woman are being held up to the same level of scrutiny.
