I<\/span><\/p><\/div>

\nt\u2019s not easy being earnest in <\/span>Bollywood<\/span><\/a>. But if one man can do it, without appearing completely fake and with just the right amount of saccharine, it\u2019s Rajkumar Hirani.<\/span>\n\nFrom what we know of <\/span>Rajkumar Hirani<\/span><\/a> via the public domain, the filmmaker\u2019s life before films was a lot like Farhan\u2019s from <\/span>3 Idiots<\/span><\/i>. Senior Hirani, much like Farhan\u2019s father, wanted his son to take up a white-collar job and become a chartered accountant. But Rajkumar Hirani wanted to be a film director, and the journey to the director\u2019s chair wasn\u2019t going to be an easy one. <\/span>\n\nHe failed to get into FTII and had a forgettable run as an aspiring actor \u2013 but the Nagpur lad didn\u2019t lose hope. And like one of his famous characters, retained a \u201cTension Nahi Leneka\u201d attitude. He opted for an editing course instead. Eventually, when he did complete his course, editing jobs didn\u2019t come easy and he worked as an ad executive for several years. <\/span>\n\nFinally, at 41, he got his directorial break with<\/span> Munna Bhai MBBS<\/span><\/i>, a film that redefined family-friendly entertainment. <\/span>\n\nOne of my fondest <\/span>childhood<\/span><\/a> outings remains going to the theatre to watch <\/span>Munna Bhai<\/span><\/i> \u2013 dad almost fell off his seat laughing and mum and I couldn\u2019t stop laughing at him. Together, we welled up when Munna gives the cleaner Maqsood Bhai the warmest jadoo ki jhappi ever. Even today, Boman Irani\u2019s laughter-therapy-endorsing Dr Asthana remains up there with <\/span>Hera Pheri<\/span><\/i>\u2019s Baburao when it comes to pure side-splitting comic timing. And Anand Bhai, who is awakened from his vegetative state because of Munna\u2019s camaraderie, has become a cult character \u2013 at least as far as I am concerned. <\/span>\n\n

Whether it\u2019s a goon walking down the halls of a medical college or an alien trying to decipher man\u2019s obsession with idol worship, stories from the Hiraniverse are as original as they are eccentric.<\/p><\/blockquote> \n\nWith <\/span>Munna Bhai<\/span><\/i>, Hirani created for us a world full of slice-of-life characters that keep evolving, keep mutating, in small and big ways across his other films. His humour, feel-good narratives, and finger-on-the-pulse messaging blend together to form, what I like to call the <\/span>\u201cHiraniverse<\/span><\/a>\u201d. Its inhabitants are like India\u2019s Everymen and women \u2013 simple people who often have complex backstories and lead double lives. \u00a0<\/span>\n\nSanjay Dutt<\/span><\/a>\u2019s Munna is like every Indian child \u2013 too afraid to confront his parents when he fails to live up to their expectations. He\u2019s scared to tell them about how he turned into an accidental goon. Rancho from <\/span>3 Idiots<\/span><\/i> is forced to keep his identity secret from his friends and girlfriend for reasons he considers bigger than himself. Both stories follow an unusual yet lovable protagonist getting embroiled in a strange, unfamiliar world. Both eventually overcome these mad odds while simultaneously teaching us important, heartwarming lessons. All this, with at least one scene of Boman Irani frustratedly pulling his hair out because his arch nemesis has managed to seduce his daughter. <\/span>\n\nWhether it\u2019s a goon walking down the halls of a medical college or an alien trying to decipher man\u2019s obsession with <\/span>idol worship<\/span><\/a>, stories from the Hiraniverse are as original as they are eccentric. They are packed with timeless sequences that remain etched in the memory of moviegoers \u2013 evidence of Hirani\u2019s canniness and ability to understand just what makes Indians tick. <\/span>\n\nI can barely keep count of how many times I\u2019ve rewatched Chatur\u2019s hilarious speech from <\/span>3 Idiots<\/span><\/i><\/a>, PK\u2019s quest to find a dancing car, and Munna\u2019s theory of the Kissing Car. The scenes that make you cry are just as impactful \u2013 Farhan and Raju\u2019s \u201ctohfa qubool karo\u201d from <\/span>3 Idiots<\/span><\/i>, and <\/span>Lage Raho\u2019s<\/span><\/i> sappy reunion between Munna and Circuit. <\/span>\n\n\"Rajkumar\n

During the writing process, the two explained, they go through several iterations to ensure that every scene is either punched up enough to invoke laughter or made dramatic enough to evoke an emotional reaction. So segments from their films have astounding stand-alone value. <\/span>\n\nAnd that, inherently, is the magic of <\/span>Raju Hirani<\/span><\/a> \u2013 the films stay with you long after you\u2019ve left the cinema hall. I\u2019ve turned to them time and again for answers and for direction: When I was unsure what to pursue after college, when I needed some cheering up, and sometimes just for the laughs. <\/span>\n\nSure, the Raju Hirani fan club might not be the coolest one to be in right now, given that his most recent outing was his most mediocre. Despite my initial denial, I\u2019ve had to begrudgingly agree that <\/span>Sanju<\/span><\/i>, in many places, pandered to the auteur\u2019s controversial muse. Though I wouldn\u2019t worry much about what\u2019s next for Bollywood\u2019s most bankable filmmaker.<\/span>\n\nBecause if the Hiraniverse has taught us anything, everyone has their share of chemical lochas.
