In fact, it took even <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/andhadhun-review-sriram-raghavan-ayushmann-khurrana-tabu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tabu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a while to become Tabu. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She started as a gawky <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/love-and-sex\/teenager-relationships-sneaking-in-girlfriends-house\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">teen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in her awkward debut in Dev Anand\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hum Naujawan <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(1985), with her girl-next-door face. The first two decades of her Bollywood career were uneventful; she often played the demure lassie to the dashing hero \u2013 roles that couldn\u2019t be further from her personality and oeuvre. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think of her running about the pianos in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Raah Mein Unse<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/golmaal-again-movie-review-rohit-shetty-ajay-devgn-tusshar-kapoor-kunal-khemu-tabu-parineeti-chopra\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ajay Devgn<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or prancing about in those horrendous outfits in the synthetic <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ruk Ruk Ruk<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Even back then, even though the \u201990s made a lot of garbage palatable, there was a sense that Tabu was too good for the men she was paired up with, too good for the trash she was forced to do&#8230; before she could become Tabu. \u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was only with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Astitva<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2000) that she came into her own. The Mahesh Manjrekar film that went on to win the National Film Award for best Marathi feature film, truly gave us a glimpse into what Tabu was capable of \u2013 and perhaps only Tabu could be capable of. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This was at the beginning of the noughties when her peers were busy playing the perfect heroines \u2013 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/jhoom-barabar-jhoom-jinx-amitabh-bachchan-abhishek-shad-ali\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preity Zinta<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was channeling her inner manic-pixie dream girl yet again in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kya Kehna<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/happy-birthday-aishwarya-rai-bachchan-abhishek-bachhan-amitabh-bachchan-sunheri-dhoom-2\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aishwarya Ra<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">i was playing the coy, adarsh daughter and the dreamy lover in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mohabbatein<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But Tabu made the tough choices, she decided to be picky. So after <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hera Pheri<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, she gave us <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chandni Bar<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the only tolerable Madhur Bhandarkar movie in his filmography. <\/span>\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\">Words do no justice to the versatility of Tabu, but her performances certainly do.<\/blockquote>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, Tabu also went down the path of<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Golmaal<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But she also went the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Haider <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">way. In Vishal Bhardwaj\u2019s masterful retelling of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/doodle\/shakespeare-world-book-day-sonu-nigam-vijay-mallya-yogi-adityanath\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shakespeare\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> greatest tragedy <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hamlet<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Tabu played the scheming \u2013 but also cornered \u2013 wife, and the mother whose relationship with her son flirts dangerously with the illicit. Set in the troubled background of Kashmir, Tabu brought a tragic, undefinable, mad quality to her role. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Could anyone else have done it? Could anyone else step into Bhardwaj\u2019s Shakespearean universes? Could anyone better the pitch-perfect Lady Macbeth\/Nimmi in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maqbool<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or the turbulent Gertrude\/Ghazala in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Haider<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, at the close of more than two decades after the noughties, when many of her contemporaries have either faded into oblivion or have staged half-assed comebacks, Tabu is still around. She never really left the arena to really have to make a comeback. Yes, there were a few lean years after the highs of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cheeni Kum<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Namesake <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in 2007, some excursions into Telugu cinema. Even when she resurfaced in the mainstream with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Life of Pi<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2012, there was no PR machinery at work, urging us to pay attention to her, as there was with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/people\/madhuri-dixit-birthday-rikku-rakesh-nath-dharmendra-anil-kapoor-bollywood-dhak-dhak-song\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Madhuri Dixit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Aishwarya Rai, Kajol, and their many comebacks.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tabu might take a few steps, but they are almost always significant ones. Her start to 2018 was dismal with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Missing, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a dampening thriller, but the finesse with which she played her character could chill anyone to the bone. And <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Andhadhun<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was a role written for her. \u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s the beauty of her performances. Once you see her sink into a character, it is impossible to imagine any other actor stepping into the role. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her role in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cheeni Kum <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is often glossed over, as people talk about her other powerful performances. I, on the other hand, will always be smitten by the smiles and counterattacks with which she makes a man twice her age fall in love with her. Who would\u2019ve thought that an Indian audience, accustomed to watching Raj spread his arms wide in the Alps, would fall for a love story so unconventional? But there was Tabu flirting with both <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/music\/amitabh-bachchan-75-birthday-greatest-hits\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amitabh Bachchan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and us in every frame, matching the megastar beat for beat.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Words do no justice to the versatility of Tabu, but her performances certainly do. In <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drishyam<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you see her crumbling from a tough police officer to a mother who begs to know what became of her son. In <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fitoor<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an otherwise disappointing take on Charles Dickens\u2019 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Great Expectations<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Tabu took on a role rejected by Rekha, and one wondered if she could be the Miss Havisham we envisioned. While Aditya Roy Kapur and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/series\/fitoor-mishra\/fitoor-mishra-commentarre-tiger-zinda-hai-salman-khan-katrina-kaif-ek-tha-tiger\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Katrina Kaif<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> failed to match up to Pip and Estella, Tabu made an exemplary Begum Hazrat Jaan. Her angst, helplessness, and commitment to her role provided some grace for the doomed film. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is Tabu\u2019s legacy \u2013 her tragic characters have deep, even more tragic layers. She is that crazy diamond that will keep shining on. Happy 48th birthday, superstar.
