Would we begin with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/horror-films-bollywood-ramsay-brothers-ram-gopal-varma\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ramsay Brothers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It stands to reason \u2013 after all, they introduced us to monster flicks, and created a niche that allowed low-budget horror films to thrive in the \u201980s and \u201990s. The genre has evolved a lot in the last decade, and increasingly, horror films are consciously created for a larger mainstream audience. And Hindi cinema has explored fear of the supernatural in various ways, such as&#8230; <\/span>\n\n<b>Don\u2019t let ghosts scare you: Horror comedies<\/b>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You don\u2019t have to look far for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/culture\/ghost-stories-fathers-childhood\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ghost stories<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that actually give you the heebie jeebies. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ek Paheli<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1971) is perhaps the most unsettling ghost story to come out of Bollywood, where a young woman\u2019s restless spirit follows her beloved piano \u2013 tragic, deeply haunting, and reminiscent of Kamal Amrohi\u2019s masterpiece, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mahal<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1949). Then there are films like<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Neel Kamal <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(1968)<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Madhumati <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(1958)<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Talaash (2012), <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ek Thi Daayan <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2013). <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, some of the oldest Hindi ghost stories are comedies. Around the late 1930s, Ranjit Movietones\u2019 film, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Haunted House, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">did extremely well at the box office. Unfortunately, the film has not survived. Most of the studio\u2019s films were lost when the studio caught fire in the 1960s, and it now exists as scraps of information in magazines, memorabilia, and personal memory, where it was described as a \u201chilarious ghost comedy,\u201d and \u201ca haunted house that will enormously entertain you.\u201d <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ghungroo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1952), starring Om Prakash in a double role, was also successful. The film revolves around twins, named Balam and Vinod. Balam is murdered and his ghost possesses the body of his twin, Vinod, who is a simpleton but soon starts behaving like his smarter brother. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ghungroo <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">set the tone for later films like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ghazab<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1982) and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hello Brother<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1999) that explored similar themes.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<\/span><b>Also watch: <\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Go Goa Gone <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2013)<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Duvidha<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1973)<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Paheli <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2005)<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Isi Ka Naam Zindagi <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(1992),<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Abhay <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(1995)<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Bhootnath <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2008)<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/golmaal-again-movie-review-rohit-shetty-ajay-devgn-tusshar-kapoor-kunal-khemu-tabu-parineeti-chopra\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Golmaal Again<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2017).<\/span>\n\n<b>The Wilkie Collins Syndrome: Ladies in White<\/b>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common trope in Hindi horror is a female apparition in a white sari walking away, scaring the bejesuses out of everyone. I call this the \u201cWilkie Collins Syndrome\u201d because the most popular film to use this concept was <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Woh Kaun Thi<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1964), based on Collins\u2019s iconic novel, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Woman in White<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. By the logic of this popular and theme, spooky, inexplicable events that eventually lead to multiple <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/earth\/murder-price-hill-station-holiday\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">murders<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, are resolved by a perfectly rational and human solution, and the ghost is often merely a method of distraction. So successful is the \u201cwoman in white\u201d trope that it\u2019s become an emblem of sorts and has even appeared in films that have nothing to do with ghosts. Interestingly, Daphne Du Maurier\u2019s classic, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rebecca, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was made into Hindi movies twice: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kohraa <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(1964) and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anamika <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2008). Both films heavily rely on the \u201cwoman in white\u201d image to evoke mystery. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<\/span><b>Also watch:<\/b> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bees Saal Baad <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(1962),<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Ab Kya Hoga <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(1977),<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Ghungroo ki Awaz <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(1981),<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Bhoot Bungla <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(1965),<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Jal Mahal <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(1980),<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Parde ke Peeche <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(1971),<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Bhool Bhulaiyaa \u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2007).<\/span>\n\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\"><p>Bollywood has very few creature horror films.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<b>iPossess: Films about demonic pwnage<\/b>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I was a child, there was at least one \u201cpossession\u201d a month in my grandmother\u2019s village. Yet in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bollywood<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the theme didn\u2019t gain prominence until the success of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Exorcist<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the 1970s. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jadoo Tona<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> greatly emulated <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Exorcist<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but, naturally, with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/choosing-my-religion-hindu-muslim-christianity-atheist-agnostic-hindutva-islam-rss-swami-vivekananda-anti-hindu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hinduism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the religious framework. However, one of my favourite films in this category (besides Ram Gopal Verma\u2019s phenomenal, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bhoot<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gehrayee <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(1980). It\u2019s a purely Indian-styled possession film, which integrates a family curse, superstition, and actual possession beautifully. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<\/span><b>Also watch:<\/b> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1920<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2008)<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Raat <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(1992)<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Raaz <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2002)<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Woh Phir Aayegi (1988).<\/span><\/i>\n\n<b>Vampires and Creature Horror: Beyond the Ramsay Monsters<\/b>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bollywood has very few creature horror films. Vikram Bhatt\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Creature<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had an excellent premise, in which a Brahmarakshasha manifested as a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/jurassic-world-dinosaur-dosti\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dinosaur-like<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> creature in the modern world. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Junoon<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1992) uses a twist on the werewolf theme, and has a shapeshifting tiger. The vampire is a very common topic in low-budget horror films; there is a plethora of Dracula films: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shaitani Dracula, Khooni Dracula<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and so on. But <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bhayanak<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1979), starring Mithun Chakraborty, is the best adaptation of Bram Stoker\u2019s novel. The movie depicts a feudal landlord\u2019s family as vampires and Van Helsing is a cop investigating missing villagers.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<\/span><b>Also watch:<\/b> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jaani Dushman<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1979), <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agyaat <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2009)<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, The Forest<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2009), and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shikari<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1963).<\/span>\n\n<b>Bhoot banglas: The haunted space<\/b>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a very difficult category to define. Haunted houses and forests are common in all horror films, so how do we distinguish a special category devoted exclusively to space? Let me give an example. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">13B <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2009) is a film that presents terror within a very limited space. The entire action takes place in an apartment and the ghost manifests through a TV show. The film <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vastu Shastra <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2004) uses the ancient science of vastu and \u00a0ensures the \u201csafety\u201d of the house, only it turns out to be a hotbed of evil spirits.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<\/span><b>Also watch: <\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hawa <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2003),<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Pizza <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2014), and<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Raaz 3<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2012).<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What next for Bollywood though? We\u2019re extremely poor when it comes to horror anthologies. Besides <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Darna Mana Hai <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2003) and<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Darna Zaroori Hai <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2006)<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">there are no major mainstream anthologies. After all, fear is a complex emotion. Maybe it is time to embrace the many ways of understanding it. <\/span>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What next for Bollywood horror?
