Growing up an only child with working parents, the TV often doubled up as my babysitter. Some of my earliest childhood memories took place in front of this ramshackle 20-inch Onida box TV in my grandmother\u2019s room with 12 channels and a remote held together with several rubber bands to keep the batteries from falling out. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baa and I often bickered over what to watch \u2013 I liked <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just Mohabbat, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">her favourite was <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ek Mahal Ho Sapno Ka. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But all this changed when one evening in 1998, we were introduced to the wondrously mysterious world of CID. Never one for shows that were too intense (she hated <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aahat<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with a vengeance), Baa however took an instant shine to CID \u2013 the hamminess of ACP Pradyuman and its crazy episode arcs. I was taken by Daya\u2019s brawny presence; in those pre-Netflix days, he felt almost Superman-like to me. Much before <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/goosebumps-2-rl-stine-horror\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gritty<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> American shows like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La Femme Nikita<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">X-File<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s, our first brush with murder mystery came when ACP Pradyuman looked at a body and nonchalantly said, \u201cYahan toh laash hai.\u201d Years before binge-watching became a thing, Baa and I would watch episode after episode of CID. The show became to Sony, what <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sooryavansham<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was to Set Max \u2013 the perfect filler between KBC and IPL seasons. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Testament to just how much CID has been consumed by my <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/jab-we-met-anniversary-imitiaz-ali-kareena-kapoor-khan-shahid-kapoor\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">generation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over the years is the fact that Shivaji Satam\u2019s face is the first thing that pops up in my mind when I hear anyone say \u201cACP\u201d. Despite Satam\u2019s prolific career, with performances in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaastav<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Naayak<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he is known to all of India as \u201cwoh CID wala actor\u201d. The same goes for Aditya Srivastava, CID\u2019s brooding and intense Inspector Abhijeet. Not many would have noticed him in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black Friday<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gulaal<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and even today if people spot him in Mumbai, they call out, \u201cAbhijeet, Abhijeet, CID.\u201d But it is Dayanand Shetty, who plays Daya who is truly self-aware. In Rohit Shetty\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Singham Returns<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you can see Shetty <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=jG-GB5mXTPk\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">embracing his Daya-ness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and playing a cameo as one of the cops whose sole job is, you guessed it, darwaza todna. And then there\u2019s Dr Salunkhe, the OG mansplainer. I am yet to see an episode where Salunkhe doesn\u2019t smugly dismiss his forensics assistant, Dr Tarika\u2019s inputs. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among the many things that have stayed with me about CID was its attempt at brand integration. I recall having a hearty <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/reviewing-chetan-bhagats-latest-offering-harassing-two-indian-girls\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">laugh<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with Baa, as we watched Fredericks and Daya talk about picking between <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indian Idol\u2019s<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Abhijeet Sawant or Amit Sana in the middle of a witness interrogation. It still comes up every time we discuss brand integration at work \u2014 obviously, as a cautionary tale in how not to go about it. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But subtlety and life lessons weren\u2019t the reasons Pradyuman and his <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/karva-chauth-channi-married-mard-fasting-marriage-indian-traditions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">men<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were our favourite people on TV.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CID is a pint-size Bollywood masala entertainer minus the song and dance. \u00a0Every episode of CID ticked all the right boxes of what average Indian TV viewers wanted \u2013 action, drama, the right kind and amount of suspense, and lots to laugh about. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/politics\/dissent-is-dangerous-what-unites-jamal-khashoggi-and-alok-verma\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Idealist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> protagonists that you could look up to? Check. Stereotyping a Catholic cop as a class-clown caricature for comedic effect? Check. A veteran cop trying to keep his hot-headed minions together because your elders are always right? Double check. <\/span>\n\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\"><p>Baa and I often bickered over what to watch \u2013 I liked Just Mohabbat, her favourite was Ek Mahal Ho Sapno Ka. But all this changed when one evening in 1998, we were introduced to the wondrously mysterious world of CID. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And despite all the cliches, CID kept us entertained over three decades. Though the show has barely evolved over the years, it has inspired all the Savdhaan Indias and Crime Patrols and it has outlived saas-bahu epics \u2013 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kasautii Zindagii Kay. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than the tears of Tulsi and Anup Soni\u2019s \u201csaavdhan rahiye-satark rahiye\u201d warnings, we did not have enough of watching Abhijeet jump off the edge of a building trying to rescue a woman who is already plummeting to the ground. Or Pradyuman looking at a body and saying, \u201cIs laash ka munh to ab Salunke hi khulwayega.\u201d <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But despite the show\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/dear-rakhi-sawant-youve-gone-too-far-with-your-shetoo-drama\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">camp value<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> peaking toward the mid-noughties, Baa and I did not give up <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CID<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. She, who had moved to neighbouring house by then, would call up on the landline every time an episode of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CID<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was airing. It became a ritual of sorts where we\u2019d spend hours discussing the crimes and giving our two cents on who the killer was. However, the most fun would be to watch my 70-year-old grandma fangirl each time <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/angry-women-indifferent-men-india-metoo-moment\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daya<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> would break down a door. \u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For me, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CID<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is not so much about heroes defying gravity, physics, and all logic but more about the precious 45 minutes during which I saw a completely <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/modern-family\/still-a-girl-the-side-of-our-mothers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">different side<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of my Bhagavad Gita-reading, Shreenathji-loving Baa. And though today I watch it ironically and laugh with my friends because \u201cit\u2019s so bad it\u2019s good\u201d, I wish I could go back to the time where you didn\u2019t have to pretend to like a show just to fit in. Where I could sit next to my Baa, smelling the familiar scent of her mehendi, switch on that jaggedy old Onida TV again and watch a police procedural with absolutely zero surprises.
