With <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/christine-blasey-ford-tanushree-dutta-and-the-future-of-metoo\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#MeToo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> penetrating into Indian newsrooms, comedy circles, film sets, art galleries, startups, and even advertising companies, hundreds of survivors have banded together to out their harassers. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What started out as the simple act of naming and shaming <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/sexual-harassment-women-safety-eve-teasing-india-mumbai\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">predators<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> online, has over time progressed into a cohesive movement: Complaints are being taken forward to respective organisations and institutions. FIRs have been filed. And perpetrators are facing repercussions for their unchecked actions: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/metoo-the-women-who-brought-mj-akbar-down\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MJ Akbar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had to resign as Union minister, Sajid Khan had to step down as director of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/bollywood-housefull-4-cancellation-terrible\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Housefull 4<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the Federation of Western India Cine Employees and Cine and TV Artistes\u2019 Association have issued show cause notices to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/bollywood-sexual-harassment-alok-nath-nana-patekar\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alok Nath<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But despite the results of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/metoo-defamation-lawsuit-male\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#MeToo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> wave, it\u2019s still hard to slot the repercussions of the movement into a universally agreeable definition of justice. For some women, it\u2019s an act of confrontation, for some a search for closure, while for others, it\u2019s an act of solidarity \u2013 of speaking up not for them, but for the sisterhood. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dwelling on the anarchy of #MeToo, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/Leisure\/LhMn4nQG1Rmic88lB1ZDaJ\/MeToo-is-anarchic-and-thats-a-good-thing.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">writer Supriya Nair <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">observes how the intention of this movement was \u201cnever simply about finding legal recourse\u201d but always about \u201cexposing a social faultline\u201d. It makes sense considering how it hinged entirely on calling out men\u2019s unacceptable behaviour that we have been conditioned to normalise. It\u2019s no wonder then that the default reaction for every new accusation broadcasted into our respective timelines has been unfettered rage. Sure, it\u2019s accompanied by empathy for the survivors, solidarity for their courage, and frustration at the mechanisms that shield predatory behaviour. But, an impenetrable layer of anger \u2013 at men who <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/doodle\/me-too-women-safety-india-sexual-harassment\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">harass<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with impunity, at the bystanders who look the other way, and at women and men who indulge in victim-blaming \u2013 have coloured each of these emotions.<\/span>\n\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\"><p>What we often seem to forget is that in navigating all of these inroads, anger has been and will be our choice of weapon.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the days pass, our collective anger and empathy tends to wane. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/metoo-its-time-for-the-shy-sensitive-men-to-speak-up\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accusations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> refuse to shock us, even though they continue to rattle us. But our ability to be enraged diminishes with every violation made public \u2013 with every man sent on administrative leave and with every anonymous complaint casually disbelieved. Over the span of these three weeks, there\u2019s been a drastic change in our level of engagement with these allegations. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the risk of our reactions becoming more and more subdued, I can\u2019t help but wonder: How do we sustain this momentum? Because rage and empathy are not inexhaustible emotions \u2013 they are easily spent. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even as we debate how to keep the movement alive, the best way forward probably rests on our ability to be relentless with our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/womens-anger-in-the-age-of-me-too\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, our demands, and our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/metoo-women-refuse-to-believe-other-women\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">solidarity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Whether it is urging women to escalate their accusations as formal complaint to internal work committees or the women\u2019s commission or taking legal recourse, or ensuring that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/workplaces-equality-safety-post-metoo\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">workplaces<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, organisations and public events distance themselves from proven offenders. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What we often seem to forget is that in navigating all of these inroads, anger has been and will be our choice of weapon. Our refusal to let go of our long overdue rage could possibly herald a culture where angry women aren\u2019t casually dismissed as hysterical. A reality where men fear the anger of women \u2013 because it is justified and has consequence. \u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The public outing of our harassers might not end sexual harassment, but it might just end up giving the next girl enough confidence to speak up about abuse, hold a powerful man accountable, and refuse to internalise shame. The only way we can guarantee that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/india-me-too-harassers-own-punishment\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#MeTooIndia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> doesn\u2019t just end up as a mere public whisper network is by staying angry and not backing down.
