I<\/span>t\u2019s a wonderful time to be Gajraj Rao. The actor \u2013 in his late 40s \u2013 has starred in two comedies this year, essaying starkly different characters. In Abhinay Deo\u2019s <\/p>Blackmail<\/span><\/i><\/a>, Rao was Chawla, a private detective devoid of a conscience who double-crosses and blackmails his clients with a genial smile. And in Amit Sharma\u2019s <\/span>Badhaai Ho<\/span><\/i><\/a> last week, Rao essayed Jeetender Kaushik, a fifty-something ticket collector for Northern Railways and the patriarch of a Delhi family, whose wife gets pregnant.<\/span>\n\nIn the film, Rao effortlessly straddles three roles \u2013 a romantic husband, a mild-mannered father, and a responsible son \u2013 offering us a peek into the different inner lives of all his personae. If as the <\/span>middle-class<\/span><\/a> government servant, he hesitates before tipping generously, then as the father of two adult sons with diminishing authority, he\u2019s exceedingly earnest in his efforts to impress his elder son\u2019s girlfriend. Rao becomes Jeetender Kaushik \u2013 a man accused of loving and making love to his wife, rejecting the societal expectation of being merely an asexual caregiver \u2013 with such heartbreaking sincerity that it\u2019s impossible to not be moved. It\u2019s a feat that hasn\u2019t gone unnoticed. <\/span>Badhaai Ho<\/span><\/i> opened to unanimous appreciation (you\u2019d be hard pressed to find one unflattering review) and housefull theatres, despite competition from a millennial-oriented <\/span>Namaste England<\/span><\/i><\/a>.<\/span><\/i> In its very first weekend, Badhaai Ho<\/em> has earned almost 50 crores.<\/span>\n\nThe unprecedented success of <\/span>Badhaai Ho <\/span><\/i>has also prompted Rao\u2019s newfound spot under the arclights. Although, the actor is no stranger to the Hindi film industry; he\u2019s been around for so long, he\u2019s qualified to be addressed as a veteran. Rao debuted with Shekhar Kapur\u2019s <\/span>Bandit Queen<\/span><\/i> in 1994 and over the years, continued doing bit roles in Mani Ratnam\u2019s <\/span>Dil Se<\/span><\/i><\/a>, Sudhir Mishra\u2019s <\/span>Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>Anurag Kashyap\u2019s <\/span><\/a>Black Friday<\/span><\/i> and <\/span>No Smoking<\/span><\/i>, and Meghna Gulzar\u2019s <\/span>Talvar<\/span><\/i>. <\/span>\n\nYet, it\u2019s only in the 25th year of his career that Rao became a film\u2019s driving force: In <\/span>Badhaai Ho<\/span><\/i>, the actor \u2013 cast opposite the much older Neena Gupta \u2013 is one of the film\u2019s four leading protagonists, afforded as much screen time as <\/span>Ayushmann Khurrana<\/span><\/a>. \u201cIncidentally, it was Ayushmann who recommended me for the role,\u201d Rao tells me over a telephonic chat, shedding light on what is being considered one of the year\u2019s best casting decisions.<\/span>\n

Maybe Gajraj Rao can have the best of both worlds.<\/blockquote>\nDespite this recent validation \u2013 his phone has been constantly ringing and the film tickets are being sold in black, he says \u2013 Rao is surprisingly aware that his extended screen-time is an anomaly in Bollywood. Ensconced in a bubble of ageism, the industry has routinely exploited older characters as fillers or for comedy. \u201cNeenaji and I were very conscious of not overdoing our chemistry,\u201d Rao admitted. \u201cWe didn\u2019t want to contribute to the Bollywood stereotype where the love between two older characters is just for laughs.\u201d Instead, in <\/span>Badhaai Ho<\/span><\/i>, the love between Jeetender and his wife (he has a nickname for her: Babli) is allowed to be a <\/span>romance<\/span><\/a>. It\u2019s warm, caring, and most importantly, equal \u2013 overpowering the chemistry of the film\u2019s younger actors by a mile. <\/span>\n\nIn fact, there\u2019s a brief moment in <\/span>Badhaai Ho<\/span><\/i> that neatly encapsulates the <\/span>family<\/span><\/a> comedy\u2019s progressive gaze toward its theme as well as its older protagonists. In the scene, Jeetender and his wife return from the doctor\u2019s clinic after being apprised of her unplanned pregnancy. They stop the car midway and discuss their options. His solution is abortion \u2013 a reaction to the societal shame he expects and the added responsibility at an age apt for retirement. She disagrees, even though her embarrassment as the traditional Indian caregiver, is greater. <\/span>\n\nBut Jeetendra doesn\u2019t force her or argue with her; instead he comforts his teary wife by delivering the film\u2019s most poignant line that underlines female agency: He tells her that the decision to have their child is entirely upto her. \u201cWe were very conscious of the <\/span>feminist<\/span><\/a> message that would be disseminated in the scene,\u201d Rao says. \u201cAmit didn\u2019t want it to be patronising and I didn\u2019t want to deliver it in a way that would look preachy.\u201d And there\u2019s none of that \u2013 the attention to tenderness in the scene is evident. <\/span>\n\nRao is offered countless roles of fathers round the year, but he is only interested in the fathers who aren’t defined by their parenthood, \u201cIf a father is also a scientist, I don\u2019t mind playing him.\u201d Perhaps, Rao\u2019s fascination for multi-faceted roles comes from real life: The theatre actor has also been a freelance <\/span>journalist <\/span><\/a>with Navbharat Times and Dainik Hindustan, written scripts for news channels, been an advertising professional, assisted Pradeep Sarkar on ad films, directed ads, and now owns a production house that makes TVCs. He is also a bonafide internet celebrity, having acted in two widely popular web shows. <\/span>\n\n\"Gajraj\n

It\u2019s a sound plan to survive an industry that glorifies the idea of <\/span>\u201cstruggle\u201d<\/span><\/a>, especially for character actors like him who are <\/span>meant <\/span><\/i>to get their due later in life. <\/span>\n\nBut it\u2019s a decision that\u2019s led to some heartbreaks for Rao. \u201cI was being considered for Circuit\u2019s role in <\/span>Munnabhai MBBS<\/span><\/i><\/a>, but I had to turn it down because it meant not having a regular income for six-eight months because I\u2019d have to quit assisting Pradeep Da.\u201d Yet, Rao doesn\u2019t regret turning down a role that could have defined his career, when he says, \u201cArshad Warsi did an amazing job and in hindsight I couldn\u2019t have danced or done action stunts because I have spondylitis.\u201d <\/span>\n\nInstead, he is content looking at the bigger picture: \u201cHaving a production house gives me the luxury of doing roles only if they appeal me. Not the other way round.\u201d To illustrate his point, he tells me about the time when he had a dozen offers to play a corrupt cop after <\/span>Talvar<\/span><\/i>, right from senior commissioner and investigating officer to sub-inspector and hawaldar. Rao refused all. <\/span>\n\nIn his next film outing \u2013 a black comedy directed by Rajesh Krishnan \u2013 Rao plays a politician, while his director wishlist includes \u201c<\/span>Ritesh Batra and Karan Johar<\/span><\/a>\u201d. After <\/span>Badhaai Ho<\/span><\/i>, which has well and truly showcased what he is capable of, it might not be such a distant dream.
